No: an MCP server does not need to be launched anew for every agent task or conversation. Keep a local stdio server alive for the useful lifetime of the client host when that host supports reuse, or expose an independently running server over Streamable HTTP when multiple clients need to connect. The right choice depends on transport, protocol version, and how you handle state, identity, and load—not on treating each agent session as a process boundary.

Why an MCP server is often launched per session

In stdio mode, the client launches the server as a subprocess and exchanges JSON-RPC messages with it over standard input and output. That channel belongs to the client process; separate clients cannot simply attach to the same stdio connection. This is why a host that creates a fresh client for every task may also create a fresh server process.

That lifecycle is a host implementation choice, not a requirement of MCP. The 2026-07-28 specification says clients should not use an individual task, thread, or conversation as the lifetime boundary for a stdio process. Its exact guidance is: “Clients SHOULD NOT use an individual task, thread, or conversation as the lifetime boundary for the stdio process.” See the MCP specification’s Statelessness section.

Choose a process-sharing pattern that fits your clients

Pattern Who owns the process When it fits Key consideration
Long-lived stdio A client host launches and keeps its local server subprocess available. A local integration where the host can reuse a process across tasks. The stdio channel is tied to that client process; independent clients do not share the same connection. The TypeScript SDK describes stdio as the simple local integration path: SDK server guide.
Streamable HTTP An independently running server accepts client connections. Multiple clients need to reach a server service rather than launch their own local subprocesses. Session behavior depends on protocol version. The 2025-11-25 transport documentation describes sessions and multiple client connections: transport specification.
Broker or gateway A broker routes client requests to one or more server processes. A deployment needs an intermediary to multiplex requests or bridge transports. Routing, identity, concurrency, and cleanup are broker implementation choices, not guarantees provided by MCP. A gateway translating HTTP to stdio may still spawn one subprocess per session.

OpenAI’s Agents API documentation also shows both an already-running HTTP server and a separately configured stdio process: MCP in the Agents API. These are different integration models, not a guarantee that every host can reuse processes or that every server supports every transport.

Check the protocol version before relying on sessions

2025-11-25: Streamable HTTP sessions

The 2025-11-25 transport documentation describes a stateful session option. A server may assign an MCP-Session-Id; the client then includes it on subsequent requests, and the server may terminate that session. The same documentation describes an independently running server that can handle multiple client connections. Follow the session behavior implemented by the client and server rather than assuming that a shared endpoint is sessionless.

2026-07-28: stateless protocol model

The 2026-07-28 specification says each request carries the information needed to process it: servers must not infer context from earlier requests or from process identity. State that must persist between calls needs an explicit identifier. The official release explanation says this version removes the initialization handshake and session ID, allowing requests to reach any server instance at the protocol layer without sticky routing or a shared session store: release explanation.

This change is version-specific. Confirm that both client and server support the relevant protocol version before dropping older session handling. And protocol statelessness does not mean your application has no state: a tool may return an explicit handle, such as a browser or basket ID, for a later call.

What process reuse will not fix

Application state

A longer-lived process does not make process identity a safe substitute for conversation or user identity. For a workflow that spans calls, return an explicit handle and require the client to pass it back. The server should use that handle to retrieve the intended application state rather than silently relying on whichever process handled an earlier request.

Authorization and tenant isolation

A shared process or endpoint does not authenticate callers, authorize actions, or isolate tenants automatically. Authenticate and authorize each request. When a request includes a state handle, validate it in the context of the caller’s authorization; possession of a handle alone should not grant access to another user’s data.

Concurrency and capacity

Sharing a server does not establish how many simultaneous clients or requests it can safely handle. In a stateful HTTP implementation, per-session transports may occupy memory; the TypeScript SDK guidance recommends closing idle sessions and limiting their number but gives no universal capacity setting. Set limits for the specific implementation and deployment: SDK server guide.

Transport bridges

Changing an outer connection to HTTP does not guarantee fewer subprocesses if a gateway translates each client session into a separate stdio process. The sessionless release explanation identifies this remaining bridge case: it needs another correlation or routing key when there is no protocol session ID to use.

A practical decision checklist

  • One local host owns the integration: use stdio and keep its subprocess alive across tasks if the host supports that lifecycle.
  • Several clients need a server: consider a separately managed Streamable HTTP service and verify the session model each side implements.
  • A workflow carries state across calls: return and validate explicit application-level handles; do not depend on task identity or process affinity.
  • You add a broker: define routing, caller identity, concurrency limits, cleanup, and failure behavior explicitly.
  • You expect performance savings: measure startup latency, memory, and cost on the actual workload. The cited specifications and SDK guidance establish architecture, not quantified savings.

Does sharing make it faster or cheaper?

It can avoid repeated process creation when the host actually reuses the process, but the cited sources publish no measurements for MCP startup latency, memory savings, process counts, or cost reductions. Treat improvement as a deployment-specific hypothesis: compare the current and changed setup under the same workload before claiming a particular benefit.
