A scheduled Python job can stop running, fail partway through, or hang without anyone noticing until its output is needed. A heartbeat monitor helps by waiting for an expected check-in from the job and alerting when that signal is missing. The signal must represent the right milestone: a ping sent only after useful work succeeds is evidence of completion; a process-start ping is not.
What a cron heartbeat can—and cannot—tell you
Heartbeat monitoring is an external check-in for work expected to run on a schedule. The job sends an HTTP request or an SDK event to a monitoring service; if the expected signal does not arrive within its configured window, the service can alert you. Healthchecks.io describes this as a “dead man’s switch” and explains that a missing ping can expose a machine outage, a stopped or misconfigured cron daemon, a task that exits unsuccessfully, or a run that takes abnormally long: Healthchecks.io documentation.
This is passive monitoring: the job reports to the service. It is different from an uptime check, which actively probes a reachable web endpoint. Healthchecks.io says its service is not intended for website uptime probing, application performance metrics, or log aggregation: Healthchecks.io documentation.

The three signals: start, success, and failure
Start: the job began
A start event tells the monitor that an execution has begun. It is useful for detecting work that starts but never finishes, especially when a task can hang or run for a long time. By itself, it does not prove that the task completed or produced a correct result.
Success or completion: useful work finished
For a short job, a post-success heartbeat is often the simplest meaningful signal. Send it only after the work reaches its success boundary. Healthchecks.io’s shell example chains the ping after the job with &&; if the job returns a nonzero exit status, the success ping is skipped. The documented example uses curl -fsS -m 10 --retry 5: Healthchecks.io documentation. This is the vendor’s shell example, not a universal Python implementation.

In Python, the same idea is to run the work, determine that it succeeded, and then send a completion event through an HTTP client or a vendor SDK. Do not put the success ping in a cleanup block that runs after both success and failure.

Failure: the job did not complete successfully
A failure event makes unsuccessful completion explicit, rather than requiring someone to infer it from the absence of a later success signal. Some setups use only post-success pings; start and failure events are optional depending on the service and how much lifecycle detail is needed. Cronitor documents run, complete, and fail telemetry events, while Healthchecks.io documents simple HTTP pings and optional start/success signaling: Cronitor documentation and Healthchecks.io documentation.

Choose a signal pattern for the job
Short task: completion-only
- Run the Python job.
- Check its result or allow an unhandled error to stop normal completion.
- Send the success heartbeat only after the useful work succeeds.
If the job fails before step three, the expected completion signal is absent and the monitor can alert after its grace window. Configure a separate failure event if you want an immediate, explicit failure report rather than relying only on a missed heartbeat.
Long-running task: report its lifecycle
- Send a start event when the run begins.
- Perform the work while allowing errors to reach the failure-handling path.
- Send success/completion only after the task finishes successfully, or send failure if it terminates unsuccessfully.
Set the allowed runtime or start-to-completion window deliberately. A start event without a later terminal event can reveal an incomplete lifecycle, but only if the monitor is configured to treat that gap as overdue.

Match the schedule, timezone, and grace period
A correct signal can still produce misleading alerts if the monitor expects it at the wrong time. Healthchecks.io uses the cron expression, server timezone, and grace time to determine when a ping is due; the grace period allows expected schedule variance and can also constrain the gap between start and success signals: Healthchecks.io documentation.
- Schedule: Enter the job’s actual cron expression and account for any intentional skipped runs or irregular cadence.
- Timezone: Confirm which timezone the monitor uses. A schedule interpreted in a different timezone may be marked late even when the job follows its local schedule.
- Grace period: Allow for normal startup and runtime variation, but keep the window short enough that a genuine missed run is reported promptly.
- Long-run allowance: For start and completion events, choose a maximum interval that reflects the job’s expected runtime and acceptable delay.
Cronitor also documents schedule tolerance and timezone settings: Cronitor documentation. Do not treat tolerance as a substitute for a correct schedule; too much tolerance delays detection, while too little creates alerts for ordinary variance.

How two hosted heartbeat services differ
The official documentation supports comparing these services by signal lifecycle, schedule configuration, integration method, and alert handling. It does not establish current prices, plan limits, or service-level guarantees.
| Area | Healthchecks.io | Cronitor |
|---|---|---|
| Signal model | HTTP check-ins; documentation describes completion pings and optional start/success signals. Source | Run, complete, and fail telemetry events. Source |
| Schedule handling | Cron expression, server timezone, and grace time. Source | Schedule tolerance and timezone settings are documented. Source |
| Integration | HTTP requests, including a documented curl approach. Source | SDK and API options, including a Python client. Source |
| Failure tolerance and alerting | Grace behavior and notification configuration are documented. Source | Failure and schedule tolerances, plus notification integrations, are documented. Source |
Choose based on whether a completion check-in is enough or you need explicit lifecycle events, which integration fits your Python job, and whether the schedule and alert settings match your operational needs. Verify current capabilities directly in each service’s documentation before relying on a particular integration.
Separate missed-heartbeat detection from alert delivery
A service detecting a missed heartbeat does not guarantee that the right person will see the alert. Decide who owns the job, which notifications should be sent, and how urgent failures should escalate. Healthchecks.io recommends multiple notification methods for important jobs because a single channel may fail to reach someone: Healthchecks.io documentation. Test the notification route as well as the heartbeat itself.

Implementation safeguards
- Keep unique ping URLs and API keys out of public source repositories and logs; load them from protected configuration such as environment-managed secrets.
- Send success only after the work you care about has succeeded, not merely after the process has launched.
- Make the schedule and monitor timezone agree, and revisit the grace period when runtime or cadence changes.
- For lifecycle monitoring, ensure errors reach the failure event and that a start without a terminal event is treated as overdue.
