You can make Roku’s Home Screen less crowded by hiding recommendation rows, replacing Quick Access with the App Grid, and moving your favorite apps to the top. These settings reduce clutter, but they do not remove every ad or restore Roku’s previous Home Screen design.
Hide recommendation rows
On your Roku device, go to Settings > Home Screen > Recommendation rows, then choose whether to show or hide the rows. Roku lists this as a Home Screen customization option. The change targets recommendations; it does not change the placement of your installed apps.
Roku’s Home Screen layout can vary by device, and personalized artwork and content are unique to the household and device. If the labels or arrangement differ, look for the corresponding Home Screen controls available on your device. Roku began rolling out its redesigned Home Screen across devices in the U.S. on May 27, 2026; that rollout date does not mean every device received the same interface at once. Put the App Grid where Quick Access appears
If you want a more direct route to installed apps, open Settings > Home Screen and hide Quick Access. Roku says the App Grid will replace Quick Access. This is separate from hiding recommendation rows: it changes which app-access area appears, not whether recommendations are shown.

You can also customize Quick Access without hiding it. Highlight an app or shortcut in Quick Access and press Star to add or remove it. For Roku’s available Home Screen controls, see its Home Screen help page.
Move favorite apps to the top
- On the Home Screen, highlight the app you want to reposition.
- Press Star on the remote and select Move app.
- Use the directional pad to move the app, then press OK to place it.
The new order applies only to the Roku device you rearranged; app order does not sync to other Roku devices on the account. Roku’s app-movement instructions cover the steps.

Hide app-grid shortcuts separately
Shortcuts in the App Grid are distinct from Quick Access. To hide one, go to Settings > Home screen > Shortcuts and uncheck the shortcut. Roku also says you can highlight a shortcut and use its Star menu to hide or move it. These controls affect shortcuts, not recommendation rows. See Roku’s Home Screen guidance.
Remove apps you no longer use
- Highlight the app on the Home Screen and press Star.
- Select Remove app and confirm.
If Remove app is not offered, check whether the app has an active subscription or is within its current billing cycle. Roku advises turning off auto-renew when needed before removing the app. Removing an app is different from hiding a recommendation: it removes the installed app from that device. What Roku’s ad controls can—and cannot—do
Roku’s ad preferences apply only to non-video banner ads shown in Roku menus and screensavers. They do not remove video ads, ads in partner apps, or certain themed backgrounds.
- Hide one Home Screen banner: Select the ad on the right side of the Home Screen, press Star, and choose Hide this ad. Roku replaces it with another ad. Hiding an individual ad applies only to the device where you hid it; a hidden ad may reappear, in which case you can hide it again.
- Limit sensitive categories: When Personalized Ads is enabled, go to Settings > Privacy > Advertising > Sensitive ad content and adjust the available categories. Roku says this preference applies across devices connected to the account.
These controls narrow some banner-ad content; they are not an ad-free mode. Roku explains the limits in its advertising preferences help article.

No. Roku Support says, “No, the new Home Screen layout is now the standard Roku experience, and there isn’t a setting to switch back.” You can customize the available rows and app-access options, but Roku does not provide a setting to restore the previous design.
