You can often lower an LLM API bill by sending fewer and shorter requests, routing suitable work to less expensive models, reusing stable prompt prefixes, and using batch or flex processing for tasks that do not need an immediate response. Start by measuring your own traffic: savings depend on the model, task quality, cache reuse, processing tier, and provider-specific charges.

Find out what is driving your API bill

Before changing models or prompts, break down spend by model and task. Track requests, input tokens, output tokens, cached input, cache writes, retries, latency, and any processing, storage, or tool charges your provider exposes. This shows whether your largest opportunity is fewer calls, shorter prompts, less output, a different model, or a different service tier.

Compare cost per successful task, not just the price of one call. A low-priced model that needs repeated retries or escalation calls may cost more to deliver an acceptable result than a higher-priced model that succeeds on the first attempt.

Cut requests and tokens first

OpenAI’s cost guidance recommends reducing unnecessary requests and tokens, and using smaller models when accuracy remains acceptable. Those changes can also reduce latency. See OpenAI’s latency optimization guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Remove context that is irrelevant to the current task, and avoid resending information the model does not need.
  • Combine work only when doing so does not harm quality or make failures harder to recover from.
  • Set a clear output length or format so responses are no longer than the task requires.
  • Review retries and duplicate calls; address avoidable failure causes rather than paying repeatedly for the same result.

Measure the result on representative traffic. Trimming context too aggressively can make answers worse and trigger more retries, so token reduction is useful only when the task still succeeds.

Test a less expensive model against real tasks

Model choice should be an evaluation, not a blanket downgrade. Select representative examples for each task, then compare correctness and task success across the current model and a less expensive candidate. Count retries, fallback calls, and escalations as part of the candidate’s cost.

Keep the less expensive model for tasks where it meets your quality bar; route harder or higher-risk work to a model that performs better on those cases. Recheck after changing prompts, tools, or task mix, since those changes can alter both quality and cost.

Use prompt caching only when repeated prefixes justify it

Prompt caching can lower the price of repeated input, but it does not discount new content simply because it appears in the same conversation. Its value depends on how much prompt content is shared, how often it is reused, cache lifetime, and any cache-write or storage charges.

OpenAI describes caching around shared prompt prefixes and advises measuring cache use and realized cost. A maintained session does not guarantee a cache hit. For GPT-5.6 and later, OpenAI says cache routing is automatic; a cache key can still help with separate accounting. Check current model-specific behavior before restructuring prompts. Track cached tokens and cache-write tokens alongside total input, latency, and spend. Details are in OpenAI’s prompt caching guide.

Provider economics differ. In the pricing case described by Anthropic, a cache read costs 10% of standard input; its documentation says a five-minute cache write priced at 1.25 times standard input breaks even after one read, while a one-hour write priced at twice standard input breaks even after two reads. Those are Anthropic-specific terms, not general caching rules; confirm the current model and pricing details at Anthropic’s pricing page.

Move latency-tolerant work to batch or flex processing

Batch and flex options can trade immediacy or availability for a lower price. They suit jobs such as queued analysis or other work that can complete asynchronously, not an interactive request that must return promptly. OpenAI describes flex as slower, lower-priority processing with occasional resource unavailability, and identifies Batch API for asynchronous workloads. Confirm that the job can tolerate the service profile before moving it.

Google’s Gemini Developer API pricing presents separate Standard, Batch, and Flex categories. Its displayed Batch rates for listed models are lower than the corresponding Standard token rates, but storage and tool or grounding charges may also apply. Recalculate the effective price, not just the headline rate

Provider rate cards can separate standard input, cached input, cache writes, output, storage, tools, and processing tiers. Context size, model, endpoint, and region can also affect the effective price. For example, OpenAI’s pricing documentation states that eligible models released on or after March 5, 2026 incur a 10% uplift for regional processing endpoints. Verify that both the model and endpoint are eligible before applying that multiplier to your estimate. See OpenAI API pricing.

For Claude 4.6 and later, Anthropic documents a 1.1× multiplier across token price categories in specified US-only inference cases. Check the applicable inference option and model terms on Anthropic’s pricing page.

When comparing providers or configurations, use the same task mix and account for:

  • Input and output rates for the actual model and context category.
  • Cache reads, writes, minimum-prefix requirements, lifetime, and storage costs.
  • Batch or flex pricing, workload eligibility, timing, and availability.
  • Quality, retries, and fallback calls on representative tasks.
  • Regional or data-residency price modifiers, where applicable.
  • Operational effort and whether your usage records expose the data needed to monitor savings.

A practical sequence for reducing spend

  1. Establish a baseline. Measure representative traffic by model and task, including requests, input and output tokens, cache activity where exposed, retries, latency, and spend.
  2. Remove waste. Eliminate needless calls and trim repeated or irrelevant context; set output expectations to the minimum that completes the task.
  3. Evaluate a smaller model. Compare task success and correctness on representative examples, including the cost of retries and escalation.
  4. Measure cache economics. Preserve shared prompt prefixes where appropriate, then verify actual cache hits, writes, latency, and spend rather than assuming reuse.
  5. Use a lower-cost processing tier selectively. Move only work that can tolerate the provider’s timing and availability behavior to batch or flex.
  6. Reprice the measured workload. Apply the current provider rates to the observed distribution, including output, cache writes or storage, tools, processing tier, and regional modifiers.

Prices, model behavior, and availability change. Recheck the linked provider documentation when making a decision, and estimate savings from your own before-and-after usage rather than relying on a universal percentage.
