Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

If it uploads your payload, the service receives it. Prefer the browser’s Network panel or an approved local tool for production data, and redact sensitive values before sharing anything.
Why a readable response can still be a security problem
An API response may include fields that the user interface never displays. OWASP’s API Security Top 10 guidance for API3:2019 warns: “Never rely on the client side to filter sensitive data.” A hidden field is still part of the response and may be exposed to anyone or anything that can access that response.
Formatting only changes how JSON is displayed. It does not remove secrets, prove that the API should have returned every field, or establish that the data is safe to share. A syntactically valid JSON document can still contain credentials, personal information, customer records, or internal details.
Follow your organization’s data-handling policy for production payloads. Treat access tokens, credentials, personal data, customer records, and internal information as sensitive unless your policy says otherwise. Redact them before putting output in screenshots, tickets, examples, or chat messages.

Choose an inspection method based on where the bytes go
| Method | Where processing happens | What it helps with | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser DevTools Network panel | Inspect the request and response associated with the page in your browser. | Lets you examine the response returned by the API. | Does not prove the response contains only appropriate fields or validate an application-specific schema. |
| Local command-line formatter | On your machine, when run in an approved local environment. | Pretty-prints JSON; Python’s JSON tool also reports syntax errors. | Does not review whether fields should be present or validate your application’s expected rules. |
| Browser-based online formatter | Depends on the implementation: processing may be local, or the payload may be sent to the service. | Can be convenient for ad hoc formatting. | A page that looks local, or a privacy statement alone, does not establish that a particular workflow is approved or that data is not transmitted or retained. |
Inspect a response in the browser
When the response is already associated with a page, use the browser’s developer tools rather than copying it to an unfamiliar website. OWASP’s REST Security Cheat Sheet describes reviewing API responses as part of security testing.
- Open the browser’s developer tools and select the Network panel.
- Reproduce the action that makes the API request, if needed, and select the relevant request in the network list.
- Inspect the response associated with that request. Use it to see what the API returned; do not assume the rendered page shows every returned field.
- If you need to share an example, redact sensitive values first and follow your organization’s handling rules.
Pretty-print JSON locally with jq or Python
A command-line formatter avoids sending the payload to a web formatter when you run it in an approved local environment. Confirm the installed version and use tooling permitted by your organization. The examples below assume the response is available as a file named response.json.

Using jq
Run jq . response.json to print the JSON in a readable layout. The cited jq manual is for version 1.6; check the version installed in your environment and consult its manual if behavior differs.
Using Python
Run python -m json.tool response.json to pretty-print and parse-check the file with Python’s JSON tool. The cited documentation is for Python 3.12. A parse error means the input is not valid JSON for that parser; a successful parse does not certify that the data is safe or appropriate for your application.

Both commands format JSON; neither performs an application-specific schema review or determines whether the API should have returned each field.
If an online formatter is unavoidable
A browser-based formatter is not automatically private. Browser-local processing can avoid uploading the payload only when the page actually processes the JSON locally. The service receives the data if the formatter sends it to its server. Even genuinely local processing does not protect data later copied, saved, screenshotted, or shared.

- Check whether the page sends the input in network requests while you use it.
- Determine whether it retains input or exposes a shareable history.
- Verify that the specific workflow is allowed by your organization’s policy.
- Do not treat a vendor privacy statement as a substitute for checking the workflow and policy.
If you cannot establish how the formatter handles the payload, do not paste production data into it. Use an approved alternative instead.

OWASP recommends reviewing response contents and validating structured data against expected rules. Use a maintained parser, handle parse failures, set sensible size and depth limits for the data you process, and validate expected fields and values. Do not infer safety from tidy formatting or valid syntax.
A safe default workflow
- Inspect a browser response in DevTools’ Network panel when it is already available there.
- For local formatting, use an approved command-line tool such as
jq .or Python’spython -m json.tool, with the installed version confirmed. - Review the returned fields against what the API is expected to expose; do not rely on the interface to hide sensitive fields.
- Validate the structure and values your application expects, and handle parser failures.
- Redact sensitive values before sharing output in any channel.
