Atuin makes it easier to find a command you have already run: instead of recalling its exact syntax, press Ctrl+R or the Up arrow to search an interactive history that can include where a command ran and whether it succeeded. It stores history locally in SQLite; syncing across devices is optional. Atuin documents this workflow in its overview.
What Atuin changes about command recall
Traditional shell history is useful when you know roughly when you ran something or can step backward through recent commands. Atuin replaces that basic lookup with an interactive search interface. Search for a word, path, or other fragment you remember, then choose from matching commands rather than reconstructing every option from memory.
Atuin says its local SQLite history records context such as the working directory, command duration, success status, machine, and session. That context can help distinguish two similar commands—for example, one run in the right project folder from another run elsewhere. Atuin’s overview describes the stored fields and search workflow.
This is most useful when the command is something you have run before. It helps retrieve prior syntax; it does not establish that a command is correct for a new system or safe to run unchanged. Review a result before executing it, especially if it changes files, permissions, or system configuration.

Install it, then make sure your shell loads it
Atuin needs both the application and shell integration. Its quickstart shows this install command:
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -LsSf https://setup.atuin.sh | shThis runs the installer script from Atuin’s setup site. If you prefer a package manager or need platform-specific instructions, use Atuin’s installation guide instead.
After installation, restart the shell so its startup configuration can load Atuin. Atuin captures commands through shell hooks, so installation alone is not enough: the shell must be interactive, its relevant configuration must be sourced, and Atuin initialization must run. Embedded terminals may use a different shell configuration from a standalone terminal. See Atuin’s shell integration guidance if search does not appear.

Import the commands you already have
Atuin begins recording new commands after setup, but your previous shell history is a separate import. Run this in the shell you want to import from:
atuin import autoAtuin says this detects the shell and imports its existing history. Without the import, searching Atuin will not automatically surface commands that were recorded only by your old shell history. The quickstart covers this step alongside setup: Atuin quickstart.
Search, select, and edit a previous command

Press Ctrl+R or the Up arrow to open Atuin’s interactive history search.

Type a distinctive fragment of the command or context you remember, then inspect the results.

Use the interface to select a result. Press Enter to run it, or Tab to put it on the command line so you can edit it first.
Choose Tab when you want to adjust a path, option, or target before execution. Atuin documents these controls in its quickstart.

Check shell support before relying on it
Atuin lists zsh, bash, fish, nushell, xonsh, and PowerShell, but support tiers and feature coverage vary. In the matrix documented for this article, zsh, bash, and fish are Tier 1, while PowerShell is Tier 2. These labels are not a promise that every feature behaves identically across shells or operating systems. Check the current supported-shell matrix for your exact combination before adopting it.

You can use local search without registering or syncing. If you want history available on more than one machine, Atuin offers a hosted sync service and a self-hosted server. Atuin describes synced history as end-to-end encrypted; that is the product’s documented security claim, not an independent audit. Shell history can contain sensitive operational details, so consider what you record and whether syncing suits your situation. See the sync guide.

Enabling sync creates an encryption key. Atuin says you need that key to sign in on other machines and that it cannot recover the key if it is lost. Preserve it somewhere secure before depending on sync; losing it can prevent access to the synced history.

If search does not show your history

Atuin’s search does not open: confirm the shell is interactive, its startup configuration is being loaded, and Atuin initialization is present in that configuration.

Search opens but old commands are missing: run
atuin import autoto import the existing history for the detected shell. -
It works in one terminal but not another: check the shell and startup configuration used by the terminal where it fails. Embedded terminals may need their own integration setup.
