It can reduce connection setup overhead and keep excessive numbers of open connections from burdening a database, but it does not make slow queries faster or increase the database’s underlying capacity. Its benefit depends on pool limits, application concurrency, and whether connections can safely be reused.
What is database connection pooling?
Without a pool, an application may open a database connection, use it, then close it. Opening connections repeatedly takes work; keeping too many open at once also consumes resources. A pool keeps a managed set of connections available so application work can reuse them. Amazon Web Services describes the avoided overhead as including memory, CPU, opening and closing connections, TLS handshakes, and authentication: Amazon RDS Proxy documentation.
Pooling can run inside each application process or in a shared intermediary such as a database proxy or pooler. An application-side pool reuses connections for that application’s work. A shared intermediary can accept client connections and multiplex them onto a smaller set of database connections when transaction and session behavior allow it.
Why are too many database connections bad?
Each open connection consumes database resources, and connection churn repeats setup and teardown work. When the database or a proxy reaches its configured connection limit, new work may have to wait for a connection to become available. That wait can add to application latency; it does not mean the query itself has become slower to execute once it reaches the database.

Pooling manages connection use; it does not expand the database’s permitted connection budget, fix inefficient queries, or guarantee lower latency under every workload. If the pool is saturated, borrowers can wait or time out. If it is oversized, the combined connections from application instances and other clients can still press against the database limit.
How do application pools and shared poolers differ?
| Choice | Where it runs | How it reuses connections | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application-side pool | Within each application instance | Retains connections for application work according to its pool configuration. | Configure and observe it across all application instances; idle connections may matter if a shared proxy sits behind the pool. |
| Shared proxy or pooler | Between client applications and the database | Can reuse a smaller backend connection set across client connections, depending on pool mode and session behavior. | Account for backend limits, waiting, pinning, and the intermediary’s own metrics and operating requirements. |
These approaches can coexist. AWS says application-level pooling can be used with RDS Proxy, but also warns that idle connections retained by an application pool can reduce multiplexing efficiency when those client connections are pinned to backend connections: Amazon RDS Proxy documentation and RDS Proxy best practices. Observe the combined behavior rather than assuming that adding pools always improves reuse.

What do session and transaction pooling mean?
The pool mode determines when a backend connection becomes available for another client. PgBouncer documents session, transaction, and statement modes; their suitability depends on the application and its use of session state. Consult the documentation for the exact PgBouncer version and your database driver before changing modes: PgBouncer configuration.
Session pooling
In session pooling, the server connection is retained for the client’s session. This preserves session-level continuity but generally offers less opportunity to share a backend connection among many clients than releasing it between transactions.

Transaction pooling
In transaction pooling, the backend connection can return to the pool when a transaction ends. AWS describes RDS Proxy’s default behavior as reusing a connection after each transaction: statements within a transaction use the same underlying connection, and it can be reassigned when the transaction finishes. If the proxy detects a request that makes reassignment impractical, or cannot determine that reassignment is safe, it pins the client connection for the rest of that session, preventing multiplexing for that connection during that period. See AWS’s RDS Proxy documentation.
Statement pooling
PgBouncer also documents statement mode. Do not choose a mode based on its name alone: confirm the semantics and compatibility for your PgBouncer version, driver, and application. The sources cited here do not establish a complete compatibility matrix for prepared statements, session variables, or other session-dependent behavior.

How do I choose a database connection pool size?
There is no universal pool size. Start with the database’s permitted connection budget, then account for every application instance and other client that uses it. Measure concurrent demand and connection waiting before setting pool and timeout limits.
- Find the database connection budget. Identify the configured database connection ceiling and the limits imposed by any proxy or pooler.
- Count all clients. Include every application instance, background worker, and other database client—not just one process’s pool.
- Measure demand and waiting. Observe connections in use, application-side acquisition waits and timeouts, and proxy borrow latency or pinning where available.
- Set limits and timeouts deliberately. Configure maximum connections, idle connections, and how long callers wait to borrow a connection. PgBouncer documents relevant controls in its configuration reference.
- Retest under realistic load. Check whether waiting or latency rises as connections approach the limit, and adjust while preserving capacity for other clients and operational headroom.
For RDS Proxy specifically, AWS defines MaxConnectionsPercent as a limit relative to the database’s max_connections; it does not pre-create the entire allowed number of connections. AWS recommends setting this value at least 30% above maximum recent monitored usage to allow for capacity redistribution across proxy nodes. This is AWS guidance for that RDS Proxy setting, not a general pool-sizing formula. AWS also warns that reaching the maximum can increase query latency and DatabaseConnectionsBorrowLatency. See RDS Proxy connection settings.

What should you monitor when a pool is saturated?
- Connections in use versus the permitted total: on RDS Proxy, AWS identifies
DatabaseConnectionsandMaxDatabaseConnectionsAllowedas relevant metrics. - Borrow and acquisition delay: watch
DatabaseConnectionsBorrowLatencyfor RDS Proxy, as well as application-side waits and acquisition timeouts. - Pinning and idle clients: determine whether session behavior prevents a shared pooler from reassigning backend connections, and whether application pools are holding those clients idle.
- Application and database latency together: distinguish time spent waiting for a connection from time spent executing a query.
A pool that routinely reaches its maximum and makes callers wait needs investigation: the cause may be insufficient connection capacity for the workload, long-held connections or transactions, or demand exceeding the database’s practical capacity. Raising the pool limit without checking the database ceiling can shift the queue to the database rather than solve it.
Should you use PgBouncer or an application connection pool?
Choose based on where you need connection management and what your application can safely share. An application pool is managed with the application instances; a shared pooler adds an intermediary that can reuse backend connections across clients. A managed service such as RDS Proxy operates its own pooling infrastructure and limits for supported targets: RDS Proxy overview.
- Favor an application pool when per-application connection reuse is the need and you can configure and monitor pools across all instances.
- Consider a shared pooler when many client connections need to share fewer database connections and the workload’s transaction and session behavior permits reassignment.
- Use both only with visibility into how application pools, proxy limits, pinned sessions, and idle connections interact.
AWS has described a test configuration accepting 5,000 client connections while opening a maximum of 200 connections to a test RDS PostgreSQL instance: AWS Database Blog: RDS Proxy load balancing and connection pooling. Those figures describe that test setup, not a recommended client-to-database ratio or a general performance guarantee.
