If several client WordPress sites run under one hosting account, do not assume that separate WordPress logins or folders keep them isolated. Ask the host whether each site runs as a separate system user and whether one site’s PHP process can read or change another site’s files. Where practical, use separate hosting users or accounts, and give each installation its own database and database credentials. These boundaries can limit how far a compromise spreads; they do not make a site immune to attack.
Why one hosting account can become a shared risk
A hosting login is an administrative convenience, not proof of a security boundary. Depending on how the provider configures the plan, sites in one account may share access to files, processes, databases, credentials, or resources. If an attacker compromises one installation, the practical question is whether that foothold can reach another client’s site.
The WordPress Hosting Handbook recommends running separate WordPress websites as separate users when possible to help isolate them: WordPress Hosting Handbook: Server Environment. WordPress hardening guidance also recommends considering separate databases managed by different users for multiple blogs on the same server, as a way to make it harder for an intruder in one installation to alter others: WordPress hardening guidance.
These are containment measures, not guarantees. A separate database and database user are not the same thing as a separate operating-system user or hosting account. Ask which layer the provider actually separates.

Choose an arrangement that matches the client relationship

WordPress documents the distinction between a Multisite network, multiple installations sharing one database, and multiple installations using separate databases; separate MySQL users can be used for individual installations. These choices create different boundaries, not interchangeable levels of protection: WordPress: Installing multiple instances.
When Multisite is—and is not—a fit
Multisite is an architecture choice, not a way to give every client a fully independent WordPress installation. The sites belong to a network managed through shared administration. That can suit organizations that intentionally want a common operating model, but it may be awkward when clients require independent ownership, plugin choices, updates, or control.

WordPress notes that Multisite may not suit sites meant to be strongly interconnected or to share users or data, and that shared hosting can limit the server control needed for some network configurations. Review the official guidance before choosing it: WordPress: Before you create a network.
Ask the host these questions before moving sites
- Are the sites separate system users? Ask whether each WordPress installation runs under its own operating-system user, and whether one site’s PHP process can read or modify another site’s files.
- Are databases and credentials separate? Confirm that each installation has its own database and database user, with access limited to that database.
- What is shared? Ask whether sites share file access, processes, account credentials, resource limits, or backup and restore controls.
- What happens after a compromise or service problem? Find out whether a site can be suspended, restored, or exceed resource limits without disrupting other clients’ sites.
- How does recovery work? Ask what backups include, where recovery copies are stored, and whether you can restore one site independently.
A provider dashboard that lists several sites in one place does not by itself establish whether their files and processes are isolated. Get a clear description of the plan’s actual boundaries; the label “agency hosting” is not enough.

Separate technical isolation from client operations
Decide who owns and controls each hosting account, domain, site, and subscription before a project begins. Document who can authorize billing changes, who handles updates and support, how access is revoked when a contract ends, and how a client can take over or move the site.
These responsibilities can differ even on a platform that lets one person manage many sites. For example, WordPress.com documents that sites can be managed under one login while each site has its own subscriptions and payments, and that ownership can be transferred. Keep the rest of the security and recovery work
- Keep WordPress core, plugins, and themes current, and use non-privileged users for site operations.
- Require strong authentication and two-step authentication for administrators.
- Make regular backups that include the database, keep recovery copies in a trusted location, and verify that restoration works.
- Limit who has hosting and administrative access, and revoke access when it is no longer needed.
Isolation reduces the chance that a compromise in one installation directly exposes another; it cannot prevent every compromise or replace patching, account security, and tested recovery.
Make the decision on boundaries, control, and recovery
For unrelated client sites, prefer separate hosting users or accounts where practical, with distinct databases and credentials for each installation. If keeping sites under one account is necessary, first confirm what the host isolates and accept the remaining shared boundary deliberately. Choose Multisite only when shared administration is part of the intended service model, not merely because it puts many sites in one dashboard.

Compare options on isolation, client ownership and transfer, backups and restoration, maintenance responsibility, support, resource limits, and per-client cost. Official WordPress guidance supports the security, architecture, recovery, and ownership distinctions above, but does not quantify how much moving sites apart changes compromise rates or establish that a particular hosting plan is isolated.
