If File Explorer’s Gallery crashes while iCloud Drive is installed or syncing, first install available Windows updates and restart your PC. Then identify whether Gallery itself crashes, the iCloud Drive folder crashes when opened, or iCloud Photos simply displays incorrectly: those are different problems, and Apple’s documented photo-resync procedure is not a confirmed fix for an iCloud Drive–related Gallery crash.
Identify what is actually failing
“File Explorer Gallery crashing with iCloud Drive” can describe several distinct symptoms. Pin down which one occurs before changing sync settings:
- Gallery crashes: File Explorer closes, stops responding, or restarts when you open or use Gallery.
- iCloud Drive browsing crashes: File Explorer works elsewhere, but fails when you open or navigate the iCloud Drive folder.
- Photos display incorrectly: iCloud Photos or videos are missing or appear incorrectly in Microsoft Photos or File Explorer, without Explorer itself necessarily crashing.
iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos are separate features. Apple’s available PC instructions address incorrectly displayed iCloud Photos and videos, not a crash caused by iCloud Drive.

Record the versions and the trigger
Before troubleshooting, note your Windows edition, version and build, your iCloud for Windows version, and the exact action that triggers the failure. Record whether the crash happens when opening Gallery, browsing iCloud Drive, or viewing photos. If practical, note whether the same Gallery problem occurs with iCloud Photos sync turned off. This helps distinguish a photo-display issue from an Explorer or Drive-browsing failure; the official guidance does not provide a current iCloud-specific compatibility matrix.

Install Windows updates and restart
Microsoft’s general File Explorer guidance for Windows 11 and Windows 10 recommends checking for available Windows updates and restarting before moving on to more extensive troubleshooting. Install applicable updates, restart the PC, and see whether the same action still causes Explorer to fail. Microsoft’s guidance is for File Explorer problems generally; it does not identify an iCloud Drive–specific Gallery fix.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Reset iCloud Photos only if photos or videos display incorrectly
Apple documents a resync procedure for iCloud Photos and Shared Albums when photos or videos do not display correctly on a PC. It is not established as a repair for Gallery crashing because iCloud Drive is present. Use it only when the problem matches Apple’s documented photo-display symptom.

- When prompted, choose Delete from PC. This removes local copies from the PC. Apple says the photos and videos remain safe in iCloud and on your other Apple devices.
- Wait until the photos and videos no longer appear in Microsoft Photos or File Explorer.
- Turn iCloud Photos and Shared Albums back on. New copies will begin syncing; Apple notes that the time required depends on the size of your library.
Because this removes local copies and starts a resync, allow time for the library to download again. Do not treat the procedure as a general reset for iCloud Drive or as a proven Gallery-crash fix.

What Microsoft’s Gallery history does—and does not—show
Microsoft’s Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23466 notes from May 24, 2023, identified thumbnail-loading performance for dehydrated cloud files and memory use in large collections as known issues the company was working to improve. Build 23481 notes followed on June 14, 2023. These are historical observations from Insider preview builds: they do not establish that a current released Windows build has the same issue, that iCloud Drive causes it, or that it explains a crash.
