Yes, shower steam and moisture can put a phone at risk, but one shower will not inevitably ruin every device. Apple, Google and Samsung all advise keeping phones away from showers, steam rooms or high-humidity conditions. The sensible move is to leave your phone outside the shower area—even if it has a water-resistance rating.
Why phone makers say to keep phones out of showers
Manufacturers give direct precautions, not a guarantee that every exposure causes damage. Apple lists bathing, shower spray, steam rooms and extremely humid conditions among exposures to avoid in its iPhone handling guidance. Google Pixel Phone Help says, “Don’t take your phone into a sink, shower, sauna, or bathtub.” Samsung warns Galaxy users against abnormal temperatures such as saunas and steam rooms, as well as places with high humidity, in its Galaxy water-resistance guidance, updated 15 April 2026.
These warnings support a practical risk-reduction choice: keep the phone away from shower spray, humidity and heat. The cited manufacturer guidance does not quantify the chance of damage from shower steam or establish that a particular exposure will destroy a phone. Avoid treating “steam can ruin your phone” as a certainty or claiming a precise failure rate.

An IP rating describes protection under specified test conditions; it is not a general promise that a device is waterproof or safe in every wet environment. Google’s IP-rating explainer describes IP68 as dust-tight protection and fresh-water immersion at a depth and duration set by the manufacturer—typically up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. Google still advises keeping Pixel phones away from showers.

Samsung says the supported rating depends on the Galaxy model. Its UK support page describes IPx7 as 30 minutes at 1 metre and IPx8 as 30 minutes at 1.5 metres. Those figures describe immersion-test conditions, not a shower-use guarantee. Apple also warns against shower spray despite water-resistance testing under controlled laboratory conditions.
Water resistance can decline: Apple and Google cite normal wear, and Samsung notes that ratings vary by model. A rating alone cannot settle whether a particular phone is suitable for a shower; follow the instructions for the exact model.

What to do if your phone gets wet
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your device rather than applying one brand’s drying interval to another. Disconnect cables and accessories, and do not charge a wet phone.

- iPhone: Apple advises unplugging cables, wiping the phone with a soft, lint-free cloth and allowing airflow. Do not charge or connect an accessory until it is completely dry; Apple says to wait at least five hours after liquid exposure before charging or connecting an accessory. - Pixel: Google says to turn the phone off if it falls in water, dry it with a soft cloth and leave it at room temperature. See Google Pixel Phone Help.
- Galaxy: Samsung says to dry the phone thoroughly and not connect a charger or accessory until the external connector is completely dry. See Samsung’s Galaxy guidance.
Can liquid damage be covered by warranty?
Do not assume standard warranty coverage will pay for water damage. Apple says liquid-damage service is not covered by its one-year limited warranty, subject to possible rights under consumer law; its liquid-damage warranty information also discusses the Liquid Contact Indicator. Google says damage from external causes such as water damage is not covered under its warranty guidance. Check the exact model, region and applicable coverage terms.

Want audio while showering?
Leave the phone outside the shower area and use a Bluetooth speaker from a distance. Google recommends this option near water or steam. Use the speaker according to its own manufacturer’s instructions; the recommendation does not mean every speaker is safe inside a shower.
