For a new investor in Pakistan, a mutual fund may suit you if you want professionally managed exposure and are willing to check the fund’s mandate, risk and charges. Buying individual Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) shares may suit you if you want to choose companies yourself and can research and monitor them. Neither option is inherently safer or more profitable; the right fit depends on your goals, time horizon, tolerance for losses, need to access your money and the total cost of the specific investment.
What you are buying
Individual shares
A share represents ownership in a listed company in proportion to your contribution. When you invest directly, you choose which companies to buy and remain responsible for following their performance. PSX advises new share investors to obtain proper professional investment advice before investing. Its guide for new investors also explains the roles of brokers, the Central Depository Company (CDC) in share delivery, and the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL) in settlement.
Mutual fund units
A mutual fund investor buys units in a scheme that invests according to a stated plan and mandate. The fund manager selects investments within those rules, but the scheme’s exposures and risks depend on the particular fund. “Mutual fund” does not by itself mean diversified, low-risk or protected from losses. On January 6, 2025, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) announced detailed requirements for investment plans; read the chosen scheme’s own current documents to understand what it does.
ETFs are a related, distinct route
Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are part of the exchange ecosystem, but they are not a synonym for open-end mutual funds. On April 28, 2026, the SECP announced a phased ETF-market roadmap that includes measures intended to broaden access and lower costs, including direct sales by asset management companies. That is a roadmap announcement, not confirmation that every proposed measure is already available. Check implementation status before relying on a particular feature.

How the choices compare
| Decision factor | Direct PSX shares | Mutual fund units |
|---|---|---|
| Who chooses investments? | You select individual listed companies. | The fund manager invests under the scheme’s mandate and plan; check the scheme documents. |
| Work involved | You research companies and monitor their performance. | You delegate day-to-day security selection, but still compare the objective, exposures, risk disclosures, fees and redemption terms. |
| What drives risk? | The company, price paid, concentration and market conditions. | The asset class, mandate, holdings, duration or credit or equity exposures, and market conditions. |
| Costs to check | Broker commission and other transaction charges or levies, including relevant PSX, CDC, NCCPL and SECP items; taxes may also apply. Consult the current broker schedule and applicable rules. | Management fee, any sales or load charges, and other expenses in the current offering document and fund manager reports. Comparable current fee figures across funds are not established here. |
| Operational route | Open and use an account with a registered broker; verify current SECP licensing and the broker’s PSX standing. | Use the asset manager or distribution route for the chosen scheme and review its current documents. |
| Key question | Do you want to choose and monitor individual companies? | Which specific mandate and fee structure fits your goal and risk tolerance? |
Choose based on your circumstances
Before comparing products, write down what the investment is for and when you may need the money. Then decide how much fluctuation you could tolerate and how much time you can spend managing investments. These answers help you evaluate specific options; they do not make either option automatically suitable.
- Goal and time horizon: Match the investment’s risks and access terms to when you expect to use the money.
- Emergency cash needs: Consider whether you could leave the investment in place through a fall in value or a delay in accessing it.
- Loss tolerance: Ask how you would respond if the value declined, rather than assuming it will rise in the short term.
- Time and interest: Decide whether researching and monitoring individual companies is work you want to take on, or whether you prefer to assess a fund and delegate security selection.
- Total cost: Compare the charges that apply to the exact broker account or fund, including one-time and recurring expenses.
What to verify before investing
If you are considering direct shares
- Check that the broker has a valid SECP licence and verify its standing with PSX. PSX’s new-investor guide describes the broker route and the roles of CDC and NCCPL.
- Read the broker’s current fee schedule and identify applicable transaction levies and taxes. PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide covers investor awareness and charges; confirm current amounts and rules with the relevant provider or authority.
- Research each company and keep monitoring its performance. Do not base a purchase on rumors, implicit promises or an assumption that a share price will rise in the short run. PSX offers investor awareness sessions as an educational resource.
If you are considering a mutual fund
- Read the current offering document and identify the fund’s category, objective and mandate.
- Review its risk disclosures and current portfolio exposures; compare funds with similar objectives rather than treating all schemes as interchangeable.
- Check total recurring and one-time charges, including management fees and any applicable sales or load charges.
- Read the redemption rules and conditions so you know how and when you may access the money.
- When considering past performance, check the period, whether figures are after fees, and whether the comparison is appropriate to the fund’s mandate. Past performance does not establish future results.
What the available figures do not establish
There is no single verified minimum investment, tax treatment, net-return comparison or expense ratio that applies to every Pakistani investor or fund. Those details depend on the instrument, scheme, date and investor circumstances. Confirm the current terms for the exact investment rather than relying on a figure from a different product or period.
