Stocks and sectors in focus around the RBI decision

The October 7 RBI Monetary Policy Committee decision is the main upcoming event in the report. The named banks are ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank; the insurers are ICICI Lombard, SBI Life and HDFC Life. The broader rate-sensitive groups identified are real estate, automobiles and leveraged non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).

Rank #2

The report does not say that any one policy outcome will benefit or hurt every company in these groups. It identifies them as areas to watch because of their sensitivity to interest rates, not as directional trading calls.

Emkay’s forecast is not the RBI’s decision

Emkay, quoted by The Financial Express, expected a cautious 25-basis-point rate increase and a neutral stance, while describing a 50-basis-point hike as an outside risk. The brokerage cited inflation pressures, tighter global financial conditions and a higher-for-longer rate environment in its reasoning. This is an attributed forecast, not confirmation of the policy outcome.

Emkay also said excess liquidity led by foreign-currency non-resident (FCNR) deposits was keeping monetary conditions accommodative despite sterilization measures. It expected the October policy to clarify the RBI’s sterilization strategy and said a further announcement of open market operation (OMO) sales was possible. These are the brokerage’s views as reported in the article, not established policy actions.

October 6 market backdrop

The Financial Express reported that the Sensex closed October 6 at 73,067.81, up 685.34 points (0.95%), while the Nifty closed at 22,776.10, up 220.35 points (0.98%). These are figures for the prior session, not live prices or a forecast for October 7.

The article quoted Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments attributing improved sentiment to a decline in crude prices and strong Q2 updates from financials and retail. Nair said: “Crude oil prices slipped below the $100 mark after a large G7 stockpile release and alternative supply measures helped offset disruptions to vessel movements through the Strait of Hormuz.” He added that this, together with the company updates, “improved investors’ sentiment and supported a rebound from the oversold levels.”
