A stereo receiver is generally an integrated stereo amplifier with a built-in radio tuner; an integrated amplifier combines preamplifier and power-amplifier functions, usually without a tuner. In modern products the labels don’t guarantee every feature, so choose by checking the exact model’s inputs, tuner, speaker compatibility, and other functions. A stereo receiver is also not the same thing as an AV receiver, which is designed for multichannel audio and video handling.

What exactly is the difference between a stereo receiver and an integrated amplifier?

An integrated amplifier puts two parts of an audio system—the preamplifier, which selects and adjusts the source signal, and the power amplifier, which drives passive speakers—into one component. Denon describes the category as typically serving two-channel stereo.

A stereo receiver conventionally adds a radio tuner to stereo amplification. That makes it useful if you want to receive broadcast radio without a separate tuner. The tuner is the clearest traditional distinction, but it is not a reliable guide to every other feature: both categories may include digital inputs, Bluetooth, streaming features, or a phono input, depending on the model.

Don’t confuse a stereo receiver with an AV receiver. Stereo receivers are for two-channel sound; AV receivers are designed to manage audio and video and may drive multiple surround channels. If you need surround sound or video switching, compare AV receivers as a separate category.

How do the categories compare in practice?

What to check Stereo receiver Integrated amplifier
Radio tuner Usually the defining extra; check which bands or services the specific model supports. Usually absent; a separate tuner can be added if needed.
Amplification Typically two-channel stereo amplification. Combines preamplifier and power amplifier in one component; commonly two-channel.
Turntable connection May have a phono input, but not every model does. May have a phono input, but not every model does.
Digital, wireless, and network features May include digital inputs, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or streaming. May include digital inputs, Bluetooth, or streaming.
TV and home theater A stereo receiver is not automatically a surround-sound AV receiver. Some models include a TV connection such as HDMI ARC; check the specific model.

These are category conventions, not guarantees. Yamaha’s receiver examples have different feature sets, and the company’s A-S501 integrated amplifier lists digital inputs and a subwoofer output. Inspect the manual or specifications for the exact model rather than inferring features from its name.

Which one should you choose?

Choose a stereo receiver if you want built-in radio

A stereo receiver is a natural fit if you listen to terrestrial radio and want a tuner built into the same component as your stereo amplifier. Confirm that it supports the radio bands or services you use in your region, then check that its other connections suit your sources.

Choose an integrated amplifier if you don’t need a tuner

An integrated amplifier may suit a system built around other sources when a radio tuner is unnecessary. It still needs to provide the particular inputs and speaker drive your setup requires; the category name alone doesn’t tell you whether it has Bluetooth, streaming, a phono stage, or a TV connection.

Compare actual models, not category-wide sound claims

There is no established category-wide rule that integrated amplifiers sound better than stereo receivers. Compare the specifications under their stated conditions, the connections and functions you need, compatibility with your speakers, and credible listening evidence for the specific models. A wattage figure by itself is not a sound-quality comparison.

What should you check before connecting your sources?

Turntable: confirm where the phono preamp is

A turntable’s cartridge produces a signal that needs phono equalization and amplification before it can be used as a normal line-level source. Check whether the turntable has a built-in phono preamp. If it does, connect it to a suitable line-level input. If it does not, the amplifier needs a compatible phono input, or you need an external phono preamp between the turntable and amplifier. A turntable without a phono preamp connected to a line input may not produce the expected signal.

Television: verify the connection and channel needs

Check the exact TV connection supported by the amplifier, such as HDMI ARC where offered, and whether the system needs only two-channel sound or surround sound. Many AV receivers offer HDMI, while HDMI ARC is available on some stereo amplifiers but is less common. If you need video switching or multiple surround channels, a stereo receiver or integrated amplifier may not be the right category.

Speakers: read the specifications under their stated conditions

Check the amplifier’s rated output at the stated speaker impedance, frequency range, and distortion, then compare it with the requirements of your speakers and intended listening setup. Don’t compare power numbers as if they were measured under identical conditions when the manufacturers state different conditions.

Model and category Manufacturer-stated output Listed features relevant to choosing
Yamaha R200A, stereo receiver 100 W + 100 W at 8 ohms, 40 Hz–20 kHz, 0.2% THD (Yamaha USA specification, accessed October 3, 2026). AM/FM radio with 40 presets, Bluetooth 5.3 multipoint, phono input, headphone output, and A/B speaker support.
Yamaha R-N303, network stereo receiver 100 W + 100 W at 8 ohms, 40 Hz–20 kHz, 0.2% THD (Yamaha USA specification, accessed October 3, 2026). Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Bluetooth, optical and coaxial digital inputs, and phono input.
Yamaha A-S501, integrated amplifier 85 W + 85 W at 8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 0.019% THD (Yamaha USA specification, accessed October 3, 2026). Optical and coaxial digital inputs and a subwoofer output.

The ratings above use different stated frequency ranges and distortion levels, so they do not establish that one category is inherently more powerful or sounds better. They do show that a receiver can combine a tuner with digital or wireless features, while an integrated amplifier can provide digital inputs and a subwoofer output without being defined by a tuner.

A quick model-check checklist

  • Is a built-in tuner important, and does it support the bands or services you use?
  • Do the analog and digital inputs match your sources?
  • For wireless audio, does the model support the specific connection or service you need?
  • For a turntable, is a phono preamp built into the turntable, the amplifier, or neither?
  • For a TV, does the amplifier have the required connection, and is two-channel sound sufficient?
  • Do the amplifier’s stated speaker ratings suit your speakers and setup?
