A photo file can be damaged in its structure, its image data, or both. Stellar Repair for Photo may repair some files, but a preview is the best way to judge whether the result is usable: damaged images can still have missing areas or color loss, and severely corrupted files may yield only a thumbnail. Stellar’s evaluation download allows previews; saving a repaired image requires registration.
What happens when a photo file goes bad?
An unreadable photo is not necessarily damaged in just one way. Stellar’s 2018 Windows manual distinguishes a JPEG’s container—the structure that identifies and organizes the file—from the image data inside it. If the container is damaged, an application may fail to recognize the file as a JPEG and show an “Invalid image” message. If the container is intact but image data is damaged, repair may be possible while leaving missing areas or lost color. These are possible outcomes, not a promise that every file can be repaired. Stellar’s Windows manual describes the distinction.
Stellar’s current product page also says its software addresses issues such as corrupt headers, invalid image structure, unknown markers, and missing SOS markers. Those are the manufacturer’s stated capabilities; they do not establish that a repaired image will be complete or visually faithful. Stellar’s photo repair overview lists these cases.
What Stellar Repair for Photo supports
Stellar’s Windows product page lists version 8.9.0.0, released in May 2026. Its advertised formats include JPEG/JPG, TIFF, DNG, HEIC, ARW, CR2, CR3, CRW, ERF, MRW, NEF, NRW, ORF, PEF, RAF, SR2, RW2, and SRF. These are the formats listed for the Windows product, not a blanket specification for every Stellar service or platform. Stellar’s current product page also lists Windows 11, 10, 8.1, and 8 (64-bit), plus Windows Server 2022, 2019, and 2016; it specifies 4 GB minimum memory, 8 GB recommended, and 250 MB for installation files.

RAW files are saved as JPEG
Stellar says repaired RAW images are listed and saved as JPEG files, rather than restored to their native camera RAW format. That output may be adequate for viewing or sharing, but it is a material limitation if your goal is to continue editing the original RAW file. The product page and photo repair overview describe this output behavior.
How to use the repair workflow and evaluate the result
- Add the damaged photo: Select the file in Stellar Repair for Photo. The product page describes a workflow that begins by adding damaged photos.
- Run Repair: Start the repair process for the selected file.
- Inspect the preview: Check whether the image opens and whether important areas, colors, and detail appear intact. A preview is evidence of what the software produced, not a guarantee of a complete restoration.
- Save only if the result works for you: Stellar says its free evaluation download provides previews, but registration is required to save repaired images. It also says the program is read-only and does not modify original JPEG files. See Stellar’s product details.
When Advanced Repair needs a sample photo
For a severely corrupted JPEG, Stellar’s Advanced Repair instructions call for a good sample photo captured by the same device and in the same format as the damaged image. Stellar says the sample can provide information such as file type, resolution, ISO, and device. This method is specifically described for JPEGs of the same format; the instructions do not establish that it applies to every supported format. If you no longer have the camera or phone, or cannot produce a comparable photo, this repair path may not be available. Stellar’s sample-file instructions explain the requirement.

What a repair may not recover
- Some or all image content: Stellar’s manual says damaged image data can result in missing image areas or color loss even when the file’s container remains intact. The manual describes these limitations.
- More than a thumbnail: Stellar support warns that severe damage may allow extraction of only a thumbnail, producing a smaller image. This is one possible outcome, not a prediction for every damaged file. Stellar’s support category discusses it.
- A deleted file: The standard repair product is for damaged files, not lost or deleted JPEG recovery. If the file is missing from the storage device, recovery is a different task; the product page distinguishes its repair tool from a separate recovery-and-repair edition. Its existence does not establish that any particular deleted file can be recovered. Stellar’s product FAQ explains the distinction.
- The original RAW format: Repaired RAW images are saved as JPEG, as noted above; do not expect a repaired native RAW output.
Desktop software or Stellar’s online repair?
Stellar also offers a browser-based repair service, separate from the desktop product. Its online page lists JPG/JPEG, HEIC, TIFF/TIF, RAW, and many camera formats. The free online plan allows one file up to 20 MB; that limit applies to the online service and should not be assumed to apply to the Windows desktop software. How to decide whether Stellar is a fit
- The file still exists but will not open or looks damaged: That is the repair use case. If the file has been deleted or is no longer present, look for a recovery workflow instead.
- Your format is listed: Check Stellar’s current Windows format list before attempting repair. For RAW photos, decide whether JPEG output meets your needs.
- You can inspect before saving: Use the preview to assess completeness and quality, then register only if you want to save the result.
- The JPEG is severely corrupted: Consider whether you can provide the required good sample from the same device and in the same format for Advanced Repair.
- The image is irreplaceable: Avoid treating a repair attempt as a guaranteed restoration. Keep the damaged original unchanged and judge any output against what you actually need from the photo.
