Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart is a live revenue ranking—not a count of copies sold, players, or play time. It orders eligible Steam items by total revenue, including game editions, downloadable content (DLC), and in-game transactions. Think of “Top of the Pops” as a snapshot of what is earning most on Steam, not a popularity poll.
What Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart measures
Steam describes the page as “Top 100 selling games right now, by revenue.” Its 2022 explanation says the ranking uses total revenue from all sources, including editions of a game, DLC, and in-game transactions. Steam put it this way in its September 22, 2022 announcement, “New Real-Time and Weekly Steam Charts”: “The new top-selling lists rank games based on total revenue, including all sources such as DLC and in-game transactions so we can all get a more complete picture of which games players are excited about getting into and continuing to play.”

That means a high position does not establish that a game sold the most base-game copies. A free-to-play game can rank through purchases of paid content, and an individual DLC item may appear as its own entry if it sells well enough. The displayed chart is a revenue order, not a public report of units sold or dollar totals.
How to read the chart
- Rank: The entry’s position in the selected revenue list. It is not a disclosed sales-unit total.
- Price: The displayed price or free-to-play status at the time you view the chart. Prices and discounts can change.
- Change: Steam describes this as the number of positions changed compared with the previous week. It indicates movement, but does not explain why the position changed.
- Weeks: How many weeks the entry has appeared on the Top Sellers chart. This shows chart longevity, not cumulative revenue or player count.
Steam does not state a detailed calculation formula, an exact live revenue window, how refunds are treated, or how ties are broken in the cited methodology. Do not infer those details from a rank or its movement.

Global, country, and other Steam charts
The Top Sellers view can be global or country-specific. Steam says country lists may appear by default according to a user’s location, and its controls allow switching to Global or another country. A rank is meaningful only with its geography and capture time attached.
Steam Charts also includes other chart products, but they answer different questions. Use the view that matches what you want to compare:

| Chart view | What it represents | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Top Sellers | Revenue ranking | Which eligible entries are earning the most under Steam’s stated total-revenue measure. |
| Most Played | Player activity | A separate chart; its player measure is not interchangeable with revenue. |
| Steam Deck | A dedicated Steam Deck chart view | A distinct chart, not another label for Global Top Sellers. |
| Weekly, monthly, and yearly charts | Time-framed chart products, including weekly charts, monthly top releases, and best-of-year lists | Read the stated period rather than treating a historical view as a live ranking. |
You can browse these categories on Steam Charts. When comparing entries, keep four distinctions in view: the metric, the timeframe, the geography, and whether the entry is a game, edition, or separately listed DLC.

The leaderboard is live, so its order can change. Steam’s weekly-change and weeks-on-chart fields add context: one shows rank movement relative to the previous week, and the other shows how long an entry has been listed. Neither identifies the cause of a rise or fall, nor do they reveal revenue totals or player counts.

For example, a free-to-play title near the top is not necessarily selling large numbers of paid base games; its eligible revenue may come from in-game transactions or DLC. Likewise, a familiar game holding a high position for multiple weeks is not evidence of a particular number of players or dollars earned.

- Open Steam Charts and select Top Sellers.
- Check whether the view is Global or a particular country. Switch the region if you need a different list.
- Record the date and time you captured the ranking, along with the entry’s displayed price, movement, and weeks on chart if relevant.
- Describe it as a revenue ranking. Do not call it a copies-sold list, a player-count chart, or a measure of play time.
- If comparing a Top Sellers position with Most Played or Steam Deck, name each chart and its distinct view rather than treating the rankings as equivalent.
A captured listing can establish the displayed order and fields at that moment, but not a permanent ranking. For instance, the snapshot reviewed for this article placed AION 2 first, Counter-Strike 2 second, and EA SPORTS FC 27 third; those are dated snapshot positions, not claims about today’s live chart. Check Steam directly for the current order.
