Valve ended Steam client support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 on January 1, 2024. That ended supported updates and technical assistance for issues related to those systems; it did not mean Steam stopped launching on every affected PC that day.
What changed on January 1, 2024?
Steam no longer supports Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. Valve’s support FAQ identifies January 1, 2024 as the end date. In an earlier Steam client update dated April 26, 2023, Valve announced that support for those operating systems would end at 10 a.m. on January 1, 2024.
- Client updates: Valve ended supported Steam client updates for the affected Windows versions.
- Technical help: Valve says Steam Support cannot offer technical assistance for problems tied to using Steam on those unsupported systems.
Does Steam stop running on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1?
Not necessarily on the cutoff date. Valve said it expected the Steam client and games on those systems to continue running for some time without updates, but could not guarantee they would keep working. That is Valve’s expectation, not a guarantee for a particular PC, game, or installation. A client that still launches is therefore not evidence that the operating system remains supported.

Why did Valve end support?
Valve’s FAQ connects its decision to the end of Microsoft support for these operating systems: it says Microsoft ended Windows 7 security updates and technical support in January 2020, and ended Windows 8.1 support in January 2023. The FAQ does not give a Microsoft support end date for Windows 8, so no separate date should be inferred from it.

Is this the same as Steam’s 32-bit Windows cutoff?
No. The January 1, 2024 policy concerned specific Windows versions: 7, 8, and 8.1. Valve separately ended Steam support for systems running 32-bit Windows on January 1, 2026, as stated in its 32-bit Windows support FAQ. The two cutoffs address different things: Windows version and system architecture.
What should affected users do?
If you rely on Steam, use a supported operating system rather than depending on an old installation continuing to work. Whether your PC can be upgraded depends on that specific computer; Valve’s notices do not establish upgrade eligibility or recommend a particular Windows edition, PC, or installation method. Check your computer’s compatibility before choosing an upgrade path.
