Short answer: Steam runs four major seasonal sales each year, but publishers and developers decide whether an individual game is discounted. Ordinary discounts are generally separated by a 30-day cooldown, while seasonal-sale discounts are exempt from that cooldown. If a game goes on sale soon after you buy it, Valve generally allows a refund request for a game bought within 14 days and played for less than two hours, so you can rebuy it at the lower price if the refund is approved.
When is the next Steam sale?
Valve organizes four major seasonal events every year: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. These are broad, store-wide promotions, but they are not promises that every released game will receive a discount. Each publisher or developer chooses whether to participate, which products to include and how deep the discount will be, subject to Steam’s eligibility and scheduling rules.
Valve’s currently published schedule lists these upcoming dates:

Sale calendars can change, so treat dates beyond the current Steam store and Valve’s Steamworks seasonal-sale schedule as provisional. The schedule is useful for planning, but it cannot tell you whether the game on your wish list will be cheaper. The store page’s live price is the final information for your region.

How often can a Steam game be discounted?
Valve’s Steamworks discounting rules generally require a product to wait 30 days between discounts. The rule is aimed at making prices easier for customers to understand; it applies to publisher-submitted promotions rather than guaranteeing that a title will be discounted on any particular timetable.
How the 30-day rule works
- An ordinary discount generally cannot begin within 30 days of another discount.
- A seasonal-sale discount is exempt from the discount-to-discount cooldown.
- A seasonal sale also does not create a new 30-day cooldown that blocks another eligible discount.
- The seasonal exception does not override the 30-day restriction after a game’s release or after a base-price increase in any currency.
In practice, a game can be eligible for a seasonal event even when another promotion would normally be inside the cooldown period, but it cannot use the seasonal exception to discount immediately after launching or raising its base price. The rules govern when a publisher may schedule a promotion; they do not require the publisher to schedule one.
Themed events are different
Steam also runs themed festivals and other event promotions. These can have their own eligibility criteria, invitations or registration requirements. A game that is absent from one of these events may still appear in a seasonal sale later, and participation in a themed event does not establish a recurring discount pattern.

Several separate decisions can change the number you see on a store page: the publisher’s base price, a temporary discount, the local-currency price for your territory and the way local law requires a promotion to be displayed.

Base-price changes
A base-price increase in any currency starts a 30-day discount cooldown. A base-price decrease does not start that cooldown. Valve also says a publisher cannot change a base price while a discount is active or while a discount is scheduled for the future. Those restrictions can make the timing of a price change look different from the timing of the sale itself.
Regional prices and labels
Steam’s prices are localized, and Valve notes that local laws can affect how discounts appear in different territories. One region may show a strikethrough price and a prominent percentage, while another may show only the current price or a different presentation. A missing percentage label therefore does not by itself prove that the lower price is unavailable. Open the game’s store page while signed in and check the amount charged in your own currency, along with the displayed terms.
Why the percentage can look unusual
The percentage is calculated against the applicable reference price for the territory and offer. Currency conversion, regional pricing updates and a recent base-price change can make the displayed percentage differ from what you expected from another country or an older screenshot. Compare the current regional price, not a third-party image or a price seen in another market.

There is no Valve guarantee that a particular game will be cheaper at the next seasonal event. Make the decision using the information available on the title’s store page and your remaining refund eligibility.

Use this four-point check
- Check your regional price. Confirm the amount shown for your account and currency, rather than relying on a global percentage or another territory’s store.
- Decide whether today’s discount is acceptable. A seasonal event can include a game, but the publisher may skip it or use a smaller discount.
- Protect your refund window. If you buy now, avoid accumulating enough playtime or waiting beyond the standard eligibility period before deciding whether to keep the purchase.
- Confirm the product type. A game or software license follows the standard game-refund rule; downloadable content, wallet funds, subscriptions, gifts and third-party purchases have different conditions.
This approach avoids treating the sale calendar as a price forecast. It also prevents a common mistake: assuming that every item in a seasonal banner has the same refund terms or the same discount history.
Can I refund a Steam game if it goes on sale?
For a normal Steam game or software application, Valve’s standard policy allows a refund request when it is made within 14 days of purchase and the title has been played for less than two hours. Submit the request through Steam Support’s purchase-help flow. If Valve approves it, the refund is issued within one week to Steam Wallet funds or, when supported, the original payment method.
Valve specifically says that requesting a refund for a title bought just before a sale and then buying it again at the sale price is not considered refund abuse:

“We do not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price.”
The statement does not waive the normal conditions. You still need to make the request promptly and remain within the playtime limit for the standard route, and the repurchase is a separate transaction at the price currently shown on the store page.

How to submit the request
- Open Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Choose the purchase from your list of recent transactions.
- Select the refund option and provide the requested reason, such as the game going on sale immediately after purchase.
- Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method when Steam offers that choice, then submit the request.
- Wait for the approval email and processing. Valve says an approved refund is issued within one week.
If your payment method cannot receive refunds, Steam may use Wallet funds instead. Do not buy the game a second time until the first transaction has actually been refunded if you need to avoid paying for two licenses at once.
What if the request is outside the normal limits?
You can still submit a request when the purchase is older than 14 days or the playtime is two hours or more. Valve says it will review such requests, but the policy does not promise approval. Explain the circumstances accurately and do not describe an exception as an entitlement. A sale price appearing after a purchase is specifically recognized as non-abusive when you request a refund and rebuy, but it does not guarantee an out-of-window refund.

Do all Steam purchases use the two-week, two-hour rule?
No. The standard limits apply to Steam games and software applications. Other transaction types have their own requirements:

Can I buy a game again after refunding it?
Yes. Valve’s policy statement expressly describes the situation in which a customer requests a refund for a title purchased just before a sale and immediately buys that title again at the sale price. The refund and the new purchase are separate transactions. Make sure the refund has been approved, and check the current store-page price before completing the repurchase.

Does Steam refund a game bought from a key site?
No. Valve says purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys and Steam Wallet cards, cannot be refunded by Valve. The two-week and two-hour game rule applies to a purchase made through Steam, not to a code bought from an unrelated seller. For an external transaction, use the seller’s own support and refund policy.
Practical answers to common sale-price problems
The game is discounted, but I do not see a percentage
Check the current price in your territory and read the offer details. Regional law can change whether Steam displays a strikethrough reference price or a prominent percentage. The amount charged on the store page matters more than the visual label.

The game was discounted recently and is absent from the event
The ordinary 30-day cooldown may be relevant, or the publisher may simply have chosen not to participate. Seasonal sales are exempt from discount-to-discount cooldowns, but they do not compel participation and do not override the post-release or post-price-increase restriction.
The sale ended before I decided
Do not assume that the same discount will return on a particular date. Publishers set their offers within Steam’s rules. Add the title to your wish list and monitor the store, but treat any future timing as uncertain unless Valve has published a current event date.
The price changed after I added the game to my cart
Reopen the store page and review the current total before paying. A cart or saved page is not a promise that a publisher’s price, currency conversion or promotion will remain unchanged until checkout.
