Steam’s lifetime review score summarizes eligible recommendations across a game’s history; its recent score covers the past 30 days. A difference between them is a clue that sentiment has shifted between those periods—not proof of what caused it. To judge how a game is being received now, check the review volume, language, dates, and recurring themes in the written reviews.

What does Steam’s recent review score mean?

Steam displays a categorical review score based on the share of positive recommendations, not an average star rating. When available, the recent score covers reviews from the past 30 days, while the overall score reflects the product’s lifetime. These are different time windows, so they answer different questions: recent sentiment versus accumulated sentiment over the game’s history. Steamworks’ User Reviews documentation explains the two views.

Steam says it shows a recent score for games released more than 45 days earlier if there are enough recent reviews. Its customer-facing explanation does not specify the exact number required, so a missing recent score does not establish that the game has had no recent reviews. Steam’s introduction to Steam Reviews describes this availability condition.

Why is a game’s recent rating different from its overall rating?

The two scores reflect different periods. A gap can indicate that recommendations in the past month differ from the game’s lifetime pattern, but the score alone cannot explain why. Updates, changes in price or value, business practices, and community experiences can all appear in reviews; Steam explicitly recognizes that reviews may address more than gameplay. Steamworks’ review guidance describes this broader scope.

Use the difference as a prompt to inspect reviews, not as a verdict on a particular update or controversy. Look at review dates and compare specific, repeated explanations from positive and negative reviewers. An abrupt surge in reviews also deserves context: Steam discusses review bombing and says off-topic activity may be excluded from the overall score, while on-topic feedback can remain relevant. Steamworks’ guidance on review activity explains the distinction.

How to compare the scores and assess the game’s current state

  1. Confirm the time windows. Treat the lifetime score as the long-term record and the recent score as the past-30-day signal.
  2. Check the volume. Note how many reviews are recent and how many contribute to the visible picture. Steam does not disclose the threshold for showing a recent score, so do not infer a particular confidence level from the label alone.
  3. Check the language context. Since August 18, 2025, some games show a score based on reviews written in the viewer’s language when enough such reviews exist. Steam says the score is intended as a signal of how satisfied the community was with its purchase and a tool for potential customers. Accordingly, the displayed score may not be one uniform global aggregate. Steam’s language-score announcement describes the change.
  4. Read recent written reviews. Look for repeated reports and whether they concern the current game experience, value, business practices, or community. A score gives sentiment; the text helps explain it.
  5. Inspect timing around sudden changes. Compare review dates with the period of the score movement and consider whether the comments address the game or an unrelated event. Do not treat a sudden shift as self-explanatory.

Are Steam reviews from keys counted?

Not every review visible on a store page contributes to its score. Steamworks says reviews from purchases made on Steam count toward the score; reviews from users who activated a key or accessed the game through another route may remain readable but do not count toward that aggregate. Steam also allows customers to review a product after playing it on Steam even when a Steam purchase is not required to write the review. Steamworks’ User Reviews documentation explains the distinction.

That means the visible written reviews and the reviews behind the score are not necessarily the same set. When judging a disagreement between comments and the score, keep eligibility in mind rather than assuming every displayed review affected the rating.

Can Steam review scores differ by language?

Yes. Since Steam’s August 18, 2025 change, some games display a language-specific score when there are enough reviews in the viewer’s language. The feature does not mean every game has a separate score for every language; Steam says it applies when the language-specific volume is sufficient. When comparing scores, make sure you are considering the same language context. Steam’s announcement gives the scope of the change.

How much weight should you give a score swing?

A score is a useful summary, but it does not reveal the cause of a change or the full context of the reviews behind it. Steam’s systems can surface reviews using different sorting and selection approaches, and the score may be affected by purchase eligibility and language context. For a deeper technical view, Steamworks documents review-list sorting and summary counts, while its review API documentation says off-topic reviews are filtered by default in that retrieval interface. That API behavior should not be assumed to describe every store-page display or filter. Steamworks’ review-list documentation and IUserReviewsService documentation describe those mechanics.

The practical reading is straightforward: use the lifetime score to understand the long-run reception, the recent score to spot a change in recent sentiment, and the written reviews to decide whether that change reflects the game’s current state and matters to you.
