Valve is working toward a Steam Deck successor, but it has not announced a release date or launch window. The company says it wants a clear generational performance improvement without giving up the battery life and power balance that matter in a handheld. Until Valve shares a product announcement, any launch year, price, or specification list is speculation.
What has Valve said about Steam Deck 2?
Valve has indicated that a successor is in development. In an April 28, 2026 report, PC Gamer said Steam Deck designer Pierre-Loup Griffais described Valve as “hard at work” on Steam Deck 2, but did not provide a date. The report also said work on Valve’s other hardware projects could inform the device. PC Gamer’s April 2026 report is a reported interview, not a release announcement.
The latest located update, published September 15, 2026, reiterates that Valve is looking for a substantial performance step. Griffais told PC Gamer: “We’ve talked before about how we want to make sure there’s a very delineated performance improvement for something like a future Steam Deck, and I think we’re still looking at it in the same way.” He added: “It’s just a matter of looking at the current conditions and seeing how and when we can deliver something like that.” PC Gamer’s September 2026 report says memory supply has “not really” changed Valve’s goals, while the company continues to assess conditions and when it can deliver.
That is evidence of intent and a design threshold, not a timetable. Valve has not announced Steam Deck 2 specifications, pricing, or regional availability in the reporting reviewed here.

Why is Valve waiting?
Valve has said it does not want to release a minor annual refresh and call it a new generation. In a 2024 interview reported by PC Gamer, designer Lawrence Yang said: “So, we really do want to wait for a generational leap in compute without sacrificing battery life before we ship the real second generation of Steam Deck.” Hardware designer Yazan Aldehayyat described the target as “a substantial performance improvement while sticking to a similar kind of power range and weight to battery life.” The October 2024 interview report explains the constraint: more compute is useful only if the device remains practical as a portable system.
The company’s comments do not establish what chip, performance level, battery capacity, or weight a future Deck will have. They do make clear that Valve considers the balance among compute, power use, battery life, and portability part of the bar for a true second generation.

Is the Steam Deck OLED a Steam Deck 2?
No. The OLED is an updated version of the existing Steam Deck generation, not the announced successor. Valve’s product page lists a 6nm APU and changes to the screen, battery, thermals, wireless connectivity, and controls. In 2023, Valve designer Lawrence Yang called it the “definitive first-generation Steam Deck.”

Valve also claims 30–50% more battery life for OLED compared with the LCD model. That is Valve’s model-to-model comparison, not a promise that every game will run that much longer. Should you buy a Steam Deck OLED now or wait?
There is no confirmed Steam Deck 2 date to wait toward. The choice is therefore about whether you want a handheld now or are comfortable waiting an unspecified amount of time for a product whose price and specifications are not yet known.

Do not use an old estimate as a current forecast. A 2023 Axios report relayed a contemporaneous expectation that suitable hardware might arrive in two to three years; that was a historical expectation, not a present-day release estimate. Likewise, any launch-year prediction or leaked chip and specification claim should be treated as unverified unless Valve confirms it.

Until those facts exist, the OLED is the known current option and Steam Deck 2 remains a future product without a public launch window.
