State.js is a project approach in which a component’s state lives in the HTML itself. Values are written into data-* attributes, exposed to CSS as custom properties, and CSS renders whatever those values produce. The project’s tutorials show this with counters, conditional classes, timed updates, range-input bindings and reusable template instances. The phrase “only HTML + CSS” describes how you author the interface, not a guarantee that no JavaScript runs on the page.
What the title is claiming, and where it comes from
The article is a short beginner tutorial by iDev-Games, published on the DEV Community platform on June 3. The listing shows the month and day but not the year, so check the post’s date before relying on it as current. The tutorial sits within a small series of the same author’s State.js articles, which describe the library in a consistent way.
The title’s question-style framing, “What if components didn’t need JavaScript at all?”, is the author’s rhetorical prompt. It introduces the idea; it is not a finding that has been independently established.

The author’s description reduces the approach to three layers: markup carries state, State.js links changes to values, and CSS produces the visible result.

- Markup holds the starting value. A counter might begin as
<div data-count="0">. The attribute is the single place the value is written. - State.js exposes that value to CSS. The data attribute is mirrored as a corresponding CSS custom property, so stylesheet rules can read the current value.
- Declarative trigger attributes change state. An element declares that it changes an attribute when it is activated, or when a timer fires, rather than a handler being written in script for each case.
- The change reaches the page. Text content, CSS classes and styles respond to the updated value, which is how the examples show visible updates.
- CSS handles presentation. Colours, transitions and layout are expressed in stylesheet rules that depend on the state variables and classes.
What the examples cover
The tutorials demonstrate one consistent pattern across several small widgets. They show the intended way of using the library; they do not show that every application can be built this way.

What “only HTML + CSS” does and does not mean
The phrase is accurate about authoring. In the examples, the developer declares state and its behaviour in markup and expresses presentation in CSS. It is less accurate as a description of runtime. The author’s related overview of the ecosystem describes JavaScript as the runtime and glue that feeds browser signals into the HTML and CSS layers.

In practice, that means a page built this way still contains JavaScript that State.js needs in order to work. Treat the title as a statement about where you write the UI logic, and do not assume a JavaScript-free page.
Two ways of placing state, compared
The sources do not include a tested comparison between State.js and other libraries, so the table below sets out design trade-offs rather than measured results.

What is not established
The available material is the project author’s own tutorial and overview content. The following points could not be confirmed from it, so verify them directly with the project before adopting it:
- The current release or version number.
- The licence under which the library is distributed.
- Repository and installation instructions.
- Browser support and compatibility targets.
- Independent performance measurements, benchmarks or production case studies.
Claims that the approach has native browser performance, zero overhead or hardware acceleration are not supported by the material reviewed, and should not be repeated as verified facts.

When the approach is worth trying
The pattern suits interface pieces whose state is simple and local: a counter, a toggle, a status indicator, a slider that drives a visual output, or a set of repeated cards that differ only by configuration. The template-instance example is the strongest case for reuse.
It is a weaker fit where a component depends on shared data across many parts of a page, on network responses that need careful handling, or on validation and multi-step logic. Those requirements call for a broader application model, and the project’s own examples do not show how to meet them. A small prototype that covers your heaviest interaction is a practical way to test the fit before committing.
