Fabric Cryptography is building a programmable cryptography processor called the Verifiable Processing Unit (VPU). Rather than accelerating just one cryptographic algorithm, the company says the VPU combines specialized hardware with software tools for workloads such as zero-knowledge proofs, fully homomorphic encryption, and multiparty computation. Its public site lists a chip, card, server, compiler, libraries, and cloud access, but does not independently verify shipment status or broad availability.
What is Fabric Cryptography building?
Fabric Cryptography calls its processor the Verifiable Processing Unit, or VPU. The company describes it as a programmable accelerator for cryptographic computation: software expresses work through cryptography-focused instructions and hardware resources, with an on-chip RISC-V processor and a unified memory architecture. Fabric also presents the VPU as a combined hardware-and-software platform, rather than a chip that works in isolation. These architecture details are company descriptions; the available sources do not include an independent technical review. Fabric Cryptography’s product site lists the FC 1000 chip, VPU 8060 card, Byte Smasher server, an LLVM-based compiler, libraries, and cloud access.
In an October 2024 interview, CEO Michael Gao described the design as breaking cryptographic algorithms into mathematical building blocks that can be accelerated in hardware. The intended distinction is programmability across cryptographic workloads, rather than a fixed-function chip dedicated to one algorithm. EE Times’ October 23, 2024 interview reported the company’s plans and expectations at that time; those statements are not evidence of current performance or delivery.
What does a cryptography chip do?
A cryptography chip speeds up computation used by cryptographic systems. Fabric’s stated goal is to handle demanding operations used to prove information, protect computation, or coordinate secure work among multiple parties. In this context, “accelerator” describes the intended role: it is meant to perform selected cryptographic calculations more efficiently than relying on general-purpose processors alone. How much improvement it provides depends on the workload and software implementation.

Which workloads and applications does the VPU target?
Zero-knowledge proofs
A zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) can let someone demonstrate that a statement is true without revealing the underlying sensitive information. Fabric and EE Times have connected the VPU to ZK proof workloads. Fabric has described blockchain as an initial market because of demand for such proofs; that is a company-stated application focus, not evidence that every blockchain deployment is supported or in production.
Fully homomorphic encryption and multiparty computation
Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) allows computation on encrypted data, while multiparty computation (MPC) enables participants to compute jointly without simply pooling their private inputs. Fabric names both as target areas. Its site also lists TFHE and several proof systems among the technologies targeted by its compiler and libraries. These are stated targets and support claims, not independent confirmation that every use case is production-ready.

Potential sectors
Fabric has pointed to finance, healthcare, and insurance as longer-term privacy-sensitive applications. The common thread is the possibility of performing or verifying computation while limiting disclosure of underlying data. Those sectors are potential applications described by the company, not confirmed customer deployments.
What performance evidence is available?
Fabric and RISC Zero reported an order-of-magnitude acceleration for eval_check, a compute-intensive part of a RISC Zero zkVM workload. This is a company-reported result for a specific operation, not an independent benchmark across all cryptographic tasks. Their October 2024 announcement also described additional gains as future work; those projections should not be treated as achieved results.

EE Times’ interview quoted Gao making broader comparisons with CPUs, GPUs, and fixed-function accelerators, but did not provide independent benchmark results establishing general superiority. To assess an accelerator, readers would need comparable end-to-end measurements for the same workload, along with details such as software maturity, data movement, system configuration, and cost. The available reporting does not provide that head-to-head comparison.
What products and availability does Fabric list?
Fabric’s public site currently lists the FC 1000 chip, VPU 8060 card, Byte Smasher server, compiler, libraries, and cloud access, and displays a pre-order call to action. That describes how the company presents its offerings; it does not establish shipment, delivery timing, or broad availability. An October 2024 production expectation reported by EE Times was specific to that period and should not be read as a current shipping update. This is a specialized company platform, not a documented consumer cryptography accessory or retail product.

What has been reported about Fabric’s funding?
EE Times reported that Fabric Cryptography had completed a $33 million Series A round as of October 23, 2024. That is a dated report of one funding round, not a current total raised. In the same interview, CEO Michael Gao said, “We decided to focus on trust because it’s so fundamental to human society.”
How do Polygon, RISC Zero, and Zama fit in?
In a company blog post, founder Michael Gao described Fabric’s combined hardware-and-software approach and named Polygon and RISC Zero in connection with ZK proof systems, and Zama in connection with FHE. Fabric’s introductory post gives that ecosystem context. Separately, Fabric and RISC Zero announced work to accelerate Boundless and RISC Zero zkVM operations. These mentions and the specific reported workload result do not establish a general performance comparison or production status for all integrations.
