Learn to build, package, and inspect that service before adding a second service or Spring Cloud features. Distributed patterns make more sense when they address a concrete need, such as routing between services or recovering from a failed network call.
What to learn first when returning to Spring Boot
Spring Boot is designed for standalone, production-grade Spring applications. It provides sensible defaults, starter dependencies, embedded-server support, and production features such as health checks, metrics, and externalized configuration. Those capabilities make it possible to learn the application lifecycle without first assembling a distributed system. See the Spring Boot project overview.
Use Spring’s documentation overview to move from first steps and tutorials into application development. Build a modest service that accepts a request, performs a small piece of work, and returns a response. The goal is to understand the development and build workflow, not to recreate a large architecture immediately.
Make one service work from build to run
Get the application running locally, then package it and learn how to launch the executable application. Spring Boot documents running packaged applications with commands such as java -jar. Knowing how to build and run a service gives you a stable baseline for later changes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Learn the operational basics before adding complexity
Explore the service’s configuration and health information while it is still easy to reason about. Spring Boot’s documentation also covers packaging, container images, production monitoring, optimization, and deployment. Follow those topics as your application grows rather than treating microservices as the first milestone.
When a second service and Spring Cloud make sense
A second service is useful when it helps you understand a real boundary: for example, a network call, independent deployment, or a capability that should be maintained separately. Otherwise, it adds operational overhead and version coordination without necessarily improving the learning exercise.

Spring Cloud provides optional patterns for distributed applications, including service discovery, load balancing, circuit breaking, tracing, monitoring, and API gateways. Its microservices overview describes these concerns; it does not mean every application needs every component.
Choose a pattern because it solves a problem
- Service discovery or load balancing: consider these when clients need to locate or distribute requests among service instances.
- Circuit breaking: consider it when a downstream service can fail and you need a deliberate way to limit the effects on callers.
- API gateway: consider it when a client-facing entry point needs to route requests to multiple services.
- Configuration or messaging: add these when centralized settings or asynchronous communication are part of the problem you are trying to learn.
- Telemetry: add metrics and traces when you need to understand runtime behavior across boundaries.
For each addition, weigh the problem it solves against its operational cost, compatibility requirements, and whether your current exercise truly needs a network boundary. Begin with one distributed concern at a time so a failure or configuration problem remains diagnosable.

Check Spring Boot and Spring Cloud compatibility
Spring Cloud releases are aligned with particular Spring Boot generations, so select compatible versions before adding Cloud dependencies. The current Spring Cloud project page maps Cloud 2025.1.x to Boot 4.0.x and, starting with Cloud 2025.1.2, Boot 4.1.x. Because that compatibility information changes, check the official table when starting a project rather than relying on an older tutorial.
Requirements also vary by Spring Boot release. For Spring Boot 4.1.1, the official system requirements specify Java 17 through Java 26, Spring Framework 7.0.9 or later, and either Maven 3.6.3 or later or Gradle 8.14 or later in the 8.x line, or Gradle 9.x. These figures apply to Boot 4.1.1; they are not universal requirements for every Boot version.

Add observability after the service is working
Once the application runs, metrics and traces can help answer questions about its behavior. Spring Boot’s observability documentation describes Micrometer and OpenTelemetry options for metrics and tracing. Start with the signals that help investigate a specific question, then consult the current configuration guidance for the version you are using.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical sequence for rebuilding confidence
- Start with the official first steps: follow a Spring Boot tutorial and create a small standalone application using the documentation overview.
- Practice the core build and run workflow: make a change, build the application, and run it locally; then package it and launch the executable application.
- Understand configuration and health: learn how the service is configured and how to inspect its health before introducing multiple moving parts.
- Add a second service only for a clear lesson: use it to explore a service boundary, a network call, or independent deployment—not just to make the example look more like a production architecture.
- Choose one distributed concern: identify the problem first, then select a suitable Spring Cloud pattern and verify compatibility with your Boot version.
- Instrument and deploy progressively: use metrics or traces when they answer a runtime question, then explore container images and production deployment in the official documentation.
This is a practical learning sequence, not a claim that every project should follow a fixed architecture. Keep each step small enough that you can tell whether a new tool or service boundary is solving the problem you introduced it to solve.
