If the Windows 11 Start menu looks opaque, first check Settings > Personalization > Colors > Transparency effects. Windows applies only a slight transparent acrylic blur to some backgrounds and surfaces; it does not promise a pronounced glass effect. If the switch is already on, compare other Windows surfaces and check power-saving, Remote Desktop, update timing, and whether Start itself is malfunctioning before attempting repairs.
1. Turn on the Windows transparency setting
- Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Turn on Transparency effects.
Microsoft says these effects make some window backgrounds and surfaces appear “slightly transparent with an acrylic blur.” The wording matters: the setting does not guarantee a strongly see-through Start menu, and Windows’ documented color settings do not provide an intensity slider. See Microsoft’s Windows color settings documentation.
You can also check the corresponding control at Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects. Microsoft notes that turning transparency effects off makes window surfaces opaque. Accessibility visual-effects settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Find out whether the problem is limited to Start
Look at other Windows backgrounds and surfaces that can show transparency. If several also appear opaque, the issue may involve a system-wide setting or condition. If they show the effect but Start does not, keep troubleshooting focused on Start rather than changing unrelated system components.

Note the context in which the effect disappears. Microsoft’s Terminal FAQ says Acrylic can be disabled in documented situations such as a laptop running in power saver mode or a session accessed through Remote Desktop. Those are useful clues to check, but the FAQ addresses Acrylic and does not establish that either condition explains every Start menu transparency problem. Microsoft Terminal FAQ.
3. Check recent changes and update timing
If the setting is on and the symptom is new, check whether Windows was recently updated and whether the appearance changed at the same time. Also consider whether registry or folder changes, Group Policy, or mobile-device management settings changed recently. Microsoft includes these kinds of checks in its Start menu troubleshooting guidance, which is primarily for Start app problems and deployment issues rather than a cosmetic transparency complaint.

- Personal device: record when the symptom began and whether it followed an update or configuration change.
- Managed work or school device: ask the administrator whether policy or device-management settings were changed.
- Start still opens and works: treat the issue as visual unless other evidence points to a broader fault.
4. Separate a visual issue from a broken Start menu
If Start itself will not open, crashes, or otherwise fails, that is a different problem from an opaque-looking menu. Microsoft’s Start guidance discusses checking installation and activation, but warns that manually installing missing Start AppX files is unsupported and can cause problems. Do not try package installation as a routine transparency fix.

5. Match known issues to your Windows version and device
Historical Insider rendering report
In Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25145 notes dated June 22, 2022, Microsoft recorded reports that Mica and Acrylic were not rendering correctly on surfaces including Start. This is historical evidence from an Insider build, not proof of a current issue affecting stable Windows 11 installations. Windows Insider Blog: Build 25145.
Managed-device XAML issue
Microsoft documented a separate XAML-related issue for a limited number of managed environments on Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. It affected Start and other XAML-dependent apps; Microsoft said it was very unlikely on individual personal devices. The resolution rollout began with updates released June 23, 2026. Check deployment and update history if your managed device has broader Start or XAML-app failures; do not assume this issue applies to a personal PC or an isolated visual complaint. Microsoft Support: KB5072911.
6. Avoid repairs that do not match the evidence
There is no established universal repair for every Windows 11 Start transparency complaint. Registry edits, Start package reinstallation, graphics-driver updates, and system-repair commands should not be treated as guaranteed fixes for an otherwise working menu. Choose a repair only when the specific symptoms and device history point to the underlying fault; for broader Start failures, use Microsoft’s targeted troubleshooting guidance rather than applying unrelated fixes.
