Falcon 9 is SpaceX’s established orbital rocket, with a reusable first-stage booster and fairing but a non-reusable second stage. Starship is a much larger spacecraft-and-booster system designed for full reuse and substantially greater payload capacity. That design goal is still being tested: on September 28, 2026, Starship Flight 14 reached orbit and delivered Starlink satellites, but the mission ended early and the spacecraft splashed down.
What are Falcon 9 and Starship?
Falcon 9 is a two-stage launch vehicle. Its first stage has nine Merlin 1D engines; its second stage has one vacuum-optimized Merlin engine. SpaceX recovers and reuses the first-stage booster and payload-fairing halves, while the second stage is not designed for recovery.
“Starship” can mean the spacecraft alone or the integrated launch system. SpaceX and NASA use the name for the spacecraft together with its Super Heavy booster. NASA describes that system as designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Its full-reuse architecture is a design objective, not yet the equivalent of Falcon 9’s established reuse operations.
How much bigger is Starship than Falcon 9?
SpaceX’s June 5, 2026 prospectus lists Falcon 9 at 70 meters tall and 3.7 meters in diameter, and Starship at 124.4 meters tall and 9 meters in diameter. These are company-published specifications; dimensions can change as vehicle versions evolve.

Which rocket carries more to orbit?
SpaceX lists approximately 22.8 metric tonnes to low Earth orbit (LEO) for Falcon 9 and more than 100 metric tonnes for Starship. Those are published capacity figures, not guarantees for every flight. A specific payload depends on the orbit, vehicle configuration, and the source’s definition of capacity to orbit; the figures should not be treated as a direct promise for a particular reusable mission.
The capacity difference reflects the systems’ different intended roles: Falcon 9 launches satellites and scientific payloads, while Starship is being developed for much larger cargo and crew missions. A higher stated maximum does not by itself determine which vehicle is suitable for a particular payload or mission.

How reusable are they in practice?
Falcon 9: routine reuse of the booster and fairings
Falcon 9’s first-stage booster and fairing halves are recovered, refurbished, and flown again. SpaceX’s May 9, 2025 Falcon Payload User’s Guide reported more than 384 first-stage re-flights by February 2025, with 100% success, and fairing halves re-flown on 307 missions by that date, also reported at 100% success. These are SpaceX-reported reuse figures. The second stage is not designed for reuse.
Starship: full reuse is the design goal
Starship and Super Heavy are designed for full and rapid reuse, which could change the economics of launching if the system achieves repeatable operations. But a reusable design is not the same as a routinely recovered and reflown vehicle. On Flight 14, Starship reached orbit and delivered 26 Starlink satellites before the mission was cut short; the spacecraft splashed down and tipped over. That flight demonstrated an orbital milestone, not a ship returned ready for routine reuse.

Which rocket has the longer flight record?
Falcon 9 has a far longer operational history. In its June 5, 2026 prospectus, SpaceX reported about 620 orbital launches and a mission success rate above 99% as of March 31, 2026. The same prospectus reported 165 Falcon 9 launches during calendar year 2025. Those are company-reported figures with the stated dates.
Starship Flight 14, reported by the Associated Press on September 28, 2026, was the first Starship flight to reach orbit. It was an early development milestone, not a launch record comparable with Falcon 9’s. NASA’s inclusion of Starship in a launch-services contract also does not mean it has completed a NASA mission or is ready for every contracted mission.

What missions are they designed to serve?
- Falcon 9: Satellite and scientific payload launches, as well as missions involving SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft for cargo and crew transport.
- Starship: A larger transportation system intended to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Its intended scope should not be mistaken for proof that every such mission is operational today.
NASA added Starship to SpaceX’s National Launch Services II (NLS II) offering in March 2025. That is a contract listing, not evidence that a Starship mission for NASA has flown or that the system has reached routine service.
Which SpaceX rocket is better?
There is no single winner without specifying the mission. Falcon 9 is the clearer choice when the comparison is about an established flight record and demonstrated booster reuse. Starship’s case is its much larger published payload capacity and ambition to reuse both stages, but its operating maturity and full-reuse capability are still under development. The available figures do not establish a current cost-per-launch or cost-per-kilogram winner; Starship’s intended cost benefits from reuse are not proof that it is already cheaper.
