On early gathering trips in Starsand Island, collect softwood, stone, and plant fiber, and keep them available for crafting instead of selling or spending your entire supply. Hold onto ores when a visible tool, station, quest, or recipe needs them; carry food if stamina may cut a trip short. There is no established universal reserve count: let the next in-game requirement determine what to protect.
What should you gather first?
After the introductory Worktable unlock, an unofficial beginner guide recommends gathering these nearby basics around the farm:
- Softwood: Keep it as a reserve for later stations, upgrades, furniture, and construction. The guide does not establish a reliable stack size, so do not treat any fixed amount as a universal target.
- Stone: Build an early working stock, then check active recipes and quests before selling or spending down your remaining supply.
- Plant fiber: Gather it alongside stone and softwood, and preserve enough for requirements you can see in current recipes or quests.
These are beginner-guide recommendations, not an official item-by-item checklist. Recipe requirements can change; check the current in-game recipe before using a scarce batch.

What materials should you keep?
Use the next concrete progression goal to decide what stays in your inventory or storage. Crafting is connected to tools, stations, furniture, and building materials, and an unofficial profession page says the Crafting profession also gates access to other professions. It describes five tiers—Apprentice, Junior, Intermediate, Senior, and Expert—with progression unlocking more worktables, stations, and recipes. Confirm the current unlock sequence in-game rather than relying on a fan wiki.
#1 Best Overall
- Keep materials named by an upcoming recipe or station. That gives a batch a clear purpose and avoids having to gather it again immediately.
- Protect quest and upgrade requirements. If an accepted quest or planned upgrade calls for a resource, set that amount aside before selling or spending the rest.
- Prioritize scarce materials over easy replacements. Consider how replaceable a resource is in your current area and the stamina, bag space, and time another trip would cost. This is a practical decision rule, not a measured in-game formula.
- Sell or spend surplus only after checking upcoming needs. No authoritative, all-purpose reserve amounts are established for these materials.
How should you decide when to upgrade a pickaxe?
An unofficial mining guide describes ore access as gated by pickaxe tier and links tool upgrades to Crafting progression. Use that as a reason to check the next tier, not as a guarantee about a specific ore route or yield.
- Open the current in-game recipe, station, quest, or upgrade requirement tied to your next goal.
- Check which tool tier and materials it calls for, and whether the requirement is currently attainable.
- Gather or reserve the materials needed for that goal before spending them elsewhere.
- Plan a trip for a new ore only after confirming that your current build allows you to access it.
Exact ore routes, ratios, yields, node timing, and efficiency claims are not established here. Verify requirements in the current game rather than planning around a fixed mining schedule.
How do stamina and bag space affect a gathering trip?
The beginner guide identifies stamina as a constraint on gathering, says food can restore stamina, and recommends expanding bag capacity through crafting progression. Those are guide recommendations, not independently measured results.

- Bring food or forage if running low on stamina would end a longer trip before you reach your target.
- Make bag expansion a progression consideration if limited capacity is sending you back early; check its current recipe and unlock requirements first.
- Give a trip a priority: collect materials for the next visible recipe, quest, or upgrade before filling space with lower-priority items.
How to use this guide in the current version
Starsand Island is developed and published by Seed Sparkle Lab. Steam lists August 18, 2026 as the release date and February 11, 2026 as the Early Access start date; store and release details may change. The most specific gathering recommendations here come from unofficial fan guides, and the available material does not establish official patch notes for resource changes or a definitive catalog of item requirements. Check the recipes and progression screens in your current game before committing a scarce supply.
