On the Starlink-equipped flights measured in two 2025 studies, in-flight Wi-Fi was substantially faster—and typically lower-latency—than the legacy geostationary-satellite systems in the comparisons. That is a strong result for the flights studied, not a promise of a particular speed or availability on every aircraft.
How fast was Starlink Wi-Fi in the measured flights?
Two independent 2025 studies found high passenger-facing throughput, but their results come from different methods and samples. They should be read separately rather than combined into a single “typical” speed.
| Study and measurement | Starlink result | Comparison or context |
|---|---|---|
| Ullah et al., passenger-device measurements | Median single-device throughput: 64 Mbps download and 24 Mbps upload | The study also found uplink near 33 Mbps above 17,000 feet, declining to around 20 Mbps at lower altitude during descent. [Source] |
| Jang et al., speed tests within a 25-flight study | Median: 85.2 Mbps download and 46.6 Mbps upload | Across the study’s GEO systems, corresponding medians were 5.9 Mbps down and 3.9 Mbps up. The study covered seven airlines; six flights used Starlink. [Source] |
The results support a qualified yes to the question of whether Starlink can provide high-speed internet at cruising altitude: it did so in the flights measured. They do not establish a guaranteed passenger speed across routes, airlines, aircraft or times of day.

The ACM study measured typical Starlink latency below 40 milliseconds, compared with more than 550 milliseconds for the GEO systems in its sample. Lower latency can make interactive tasks—such as video calls, remote work and responsive browsing—feel more immediate than they do over high-latency satellite links. These figures describe the study’s measurements, not every service or connection.
#1 Best Overall
- Starlink provides reliable high-speed, low-latency, internet wherever you live
- Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs
- Select from plans suited for households or travel
- Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky
- STARLINK comes with everything needed to get online including a kickstand, gen 3-router, cables and power supply
Orbit alone does not determine the delay a passenger experiences. Jang and colleagues found that terrestrial routing and DNS geolocation inefficiencies could add latency when connecting to particular services. A low-latency satellite link can therefore still encounter slower network paths beyond the aircraft.
What passengers can realistically expect
Download and upload speeds are not fixed
Results can change with the route, aircraft installation, number of people using the connection, device, test server and phase of flight. The intercontinental study specifically observed lower uplink throughput during descent. A speed test on one flight is not a reliable prediction for another.
Airline peak claims are not study medians
Iberia advertised speeds of up to 500 Mbps in its June 2026 announcement. That is an airline/vendor ceiling claim, not an independently measured median or a passenger guarantee. The measured medians in the two studies above are the more useful evidence for understanding what researchers observed.

Wi-Fi availability depends on the aircraft
An airline announcing a Starlink partnership or rollout does not mean every aircraft is equipped. Check the airline’s current Wi-Fi information and, where possible, the specific flight or aircraft. Gate-to-gate access and whether a pass is free, paid or account-linked also vary by airline.
Where Starlink-equipped airline service stood in October 2026
These examples show different stages of deployment; they are not a complete list of airline partnerships.
| Airline | Status and passenger terms |
|---|---|
| Iberia | Its first equipped aircraft, EC-MAA, entered service in June 2026 on a Madrid–São Paulo flight. Iberia said Wi-Fi would be free in Economy, Premium Economy and Business, gate to gate, with progressive fleet installation over two years. Its “up to 500 Mbps” figure is an airline claim. [Iberia announcement] |
| Lufthansa Group | The first aircraft, A320neo D-AINM, entered scheduled service on August 19, 2026. The group said access would be free for Miles & More customers and Travel ID users, regardless of cabin, and projected about 850 equipped aircraft by 2029. That fleet count is a projection. [Lufthansa Group announcement] |
| Frontier | A 2026 Q2 filing recapped the airline’s July 14 announcement and said the first Starlink-equipped aircraft was planned for early 2027. This was a plan, not an operating service as of October 4, 2026. [Frontier SEC filings] |
How to compare Wi-Fi options when booking
When connectivity matters, compare the service on the specific flight rather than relying on an airline-wide headline. The most useful checks are:

- Bundle Includes: STARLINK - Mini Kit AC Dual Band Wi-Fi System - White
- FAST SATELLITE INTERNET ANYWHERE: Access high-speed, low-latency internet even in and rural areas using the global Starlink satellite network. Designed by SpaceX, the Starlink Mini Kit provides dependable connectivity without wired infrastructure, making it ideal for travel, camping, work, off-grid cabins, RV setups, and locations with no traditional broadband options.
- COMPACT AND PORTABLE DESIGN: The Starlink Mini is small enough to carry in a backpack yet powerful enough for daily use. Its portable, all-in-one design includes an integrated Wi-Fi router, DC power input, and rugged housing suitable for on-the-go applications. Whether at a campsite, construction site, or temporary location, Starlink Mini offers quick deployment and reliable performance.
- EASY TWO-STEP SETUP: Get online in minutes—simply plug in the Mini, point it at the sky, and connect. The kit includes everything needed for installation, including a kickstand, pipe adapter, power cable, and power supply. Use the Starlink app to find a clear sky view, check obstructions, explore mounting options, and manage your Starlink account and hardware settings.
- BUILT-IN ROUTER WITH WI-FI 5: The Starlink Mini includes an integrated dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router for strong wireless coverage and stable speeds. A built-in ethernet port provides wired connectivity for routers, mesh systems, gaming devices, or network hardware. Average power consumption of 25–40 watts supports efficient operation in off-grid or mobile power setups.
- Aircraft and route: Is Starlink installed on the aircraft assigned to your flight, or is the airline still rolling it out?
- Performance evidence: Are quoted figures independently measured results, or maximum speeds advertised by the airline or provider?
- Latency and stability: Lower latency can help interactive uses, but actual performance can still be affected by routing and demand.
- Access terms: Is Wi-Fi free, paid, or available only to members or users with a particular account?
- Coverage during the trip: Does the airline offer access gate to gate, or only during some parts of the flight?
The ACM comparison documents a large measured gap between Starlink and the GEO systems in its sample, but it does not establish that every GEO provider or flight performs identically.

No. The airline installs the aircraft service; passengers connect with a Wi-Fi-capable device under that airline’s access terms. Textron Aviation separately describes an Aviation Performance Kit for eligible Hawker 700/800/900 series aircraft, installable under an FAA-issued STC. Its stated up-to-1-Gbps download, up-to-100-Mbps upload and as-low-as-20-ms latency are manufacturer claims for specialized aircraft equipment, not passenger-flight measurements.
