A “star-bus network” can mean either a network wired in a physical star but operating with bus-like shared-medium behavior, or a hybrid design that combines star groups with a bus backbone. The phrase is ambiguous, so specify which meaning you intend.
Physical star and logical bus are different layers
A network’s physical topology describes how its cables and devices are connected. Its logical topology describes how data moves between devices, regardless of the cable layout. Cisco explains this distinction in its guide to network topology.
Physical star
In a physical star, each endpoint has its own link to a central hub or switch. IBM Redbooks defines a star LAN as “a LAN architecture in which the endpoints on a network are connected to a common central hub, or switch, by dedicated links.” See IBM Redbooks, TCP/IP for VSE/ESA.
Logical bus
A bus topology uses a shared communication path: devices share a backbone, and data travels along it. In a physical-star/logical-bus arrangement, individual cables run from endpoints to a central hub or repeater, but the network retains bus-like shared-medium behavior. IBM Redbooks notes that logical bus and ring topologies are often implemented physically in a star.

So the “star” describes the wiring, while “bus” describes the network’s logical behavior. A star-shaped cable diagram alone does not establish that devices communicate as a bus.
Star-bus can also mean a hybrid topology
Some people use “star-bus” for a network that combines star groups with a bus-like backbone. In a hierarchical arrangement, star segments connect through a larger structure. IBM describes a tree topology as combining bus and star elements and gives a star-and-bus tree as a hybrid example in its network topology overview.

For this meaning, “hybrid bus-and-star topology” or, where the hierarchy fits, “tree topology” is clearer than “star-bus.” A diagram should show both the backbone and the star branches.

How the layouts differ in practice

These are general topology trade-offs, not guarantees about a particular installation. IBM notes that star networks can be relatively easy to manage and expand but depend on the central hub; bus networks share a backbone, where failure can affect attached nodes and shared access can lead to collisions. The actual design choice should account for purpose, scale, budget, performance, redundancy, and scalability, as Cisco advises.

Which term should you use?
- Say physical star, logical bus when endpoints connect individually to a hub or repeater but retain bus-like shared-medium behavior.
- Say hybrid bus-and-star or tree topology when star segments connect through a bus-like backbone or hierarchy.
- Say star topology when you mean only that endpoints connect to a central device; do not infer bus behavior from the wiring shape.
