There is no universal standard thumbnail size. Choose dimensions for the destination: YouTube uses a 16:9 video thumbnail, WordPress thumbnail dimensions depend on site settings and theme registrations, WooCommerce distinguishes uploaded product images from generated display sizes, and Open Graph defines image metadata without fixing a universal pixel size.

These are destination-specific starting points, not interchangeable rules. A 16:9 thumbnail designed for a video may be cropped in a square product grid; an uploaded WordPress image may also produce several smaller derivatives.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends a 3840 × 2160 pixel thumbnail for videos, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a minimum width of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are supported. The familiar 1280 × 720 canvas remains a usable 16:9 working size, but it is not the sole or current recommended dimension in that guidance.
Video and Shorts are different shapes
For Shorts, YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels in a vertical 9:16 ratio. Do not simply reuse a horizontal video thumbnail: a vertical composition needs its own layout, with text and important visual details placed where they remain visible in the Shorts presentation.

Check upload limits on the device you use
- Mobile uploads of video thumbnails are limited to 2 MB.
- Desktop uploads are limited to 50 MB for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails.
- For video thumbnails, use JPG or PNG and keep the design readable at small display sizes.
The recommended canvas and the upload file-size limit answer different questions. If an image exceeds the device limit, export a compressed version while preserving the required aspect ratio and enough detail for its actual display size.
Why API thumbnail dimensions may differ
YouTube’s API can expose multiple thumbnail renditions. Its documentation gives examples such as medium at 320 × 180, standard at 640 × 480, and maxres at 1280 × 720, and warns that resources with the same thumbnail type can have different dimensions. If your application fetches thumbnails through the API, use the returned width and height rather than assuming a fixed size based on the rendition name.
What are the default WordPress thumbnail dimensions?
The WordPress Theme Handbook lists common defaults of 150 × 150 pixels for thumbnail, a maximum of 300 × 300 for medium, a 768-pixel width with no fixed height limit for medium_large, and a maximum of 1024 × 1024 for large. Full size refers to the original upload. These are common defaults, not a guarantee that every WordPress site serves those exact dimensions.
Check the site’s Media settings
In the WordPress administration area, go to Settings → Media. The Thumbnail size fields set the width and height, and the crop checkbox determines whether WordPress crops the thumbnail to those exact dimensions. With cropping enabled, the result can have the requested shape but may cut off edges; without it, the image can retain its proportions rather than filling the exact rectangle.

Account for themes, plugins and responsive images
Themes and plugins can register additional image sizes, so a site may generate derivatives beyond the common defaults. A theme can also change how those derivatives are used in a page layout. WordPress may serve different image sources through responsive srcset markup, allowing a browser to select an appropriate image for its display context. Therefore, the size entered in Media settings is not necessarily the size a visitor downloads or sees in every component.
If a thumbnail looks unexpectedly cropped or soft, inspect the actual image source selected by the page, the registered image sizes, and the crop setting. Changing the global Media values alone may not change a theme’s separately registered catalog or card image size.
What size should a WooCommerce product image be?
WooCommerce recommends uploading product images at least 800 × 800 pixels. That is an upload recommendation, not a promise that every storefront will display an 800 × 800 thumbnail. WooCommerce generates display sizes for single-product, catalog, and thumbnail contexts, and themes may alter those dimensions or presentation.
Separate source quality from storefront layout
Start with an image large enough to remain sharp at the largest size customers will see, then check the site’s product gallery and catalog presentation. A square source is a practical starting point for many product listings, but the theme’s chosen ratio and crop behavior determine how it appears in the grid. If the theme crops a square upload to a landscape or portrait frame, the product can lose important edges.

- Preview both the product page and category listing; they may use different generated sizes.
- Keep the product centered with enough surrounding space to tolerate a crop.
- Check image sharpness at the actual display size, not just while viewing the original upload.
What size should an Open Graph image be?
The Open Graph protocol defines the og:image property and optional structured properties including width, height, type, secure URL, and alt text. It does not establish one universal pixel dimension for link-preview images.
That means there is no single Open Graph size that guarantees an identical preview everywhere. A site can declare image metadata, but each consuming service decides how to render, resize, or crop the image. Check the destination platform’s current preview behavior when an exact display shape matters. Include accurate image dimensions and useful alternative text in the metadata when available, and keep important content away from the image edges so a crop is less likely to remove it.
How to choose the right canvas
- Identify the destination and image role. Distinguish a YouTube video thumbnail from a Short, a WordPress featured image from a generated thumbnail, and a product upload from a catalog derivative.
- Match the aspect ratio before choosing pixel dimensions. Use 16:9 for YouTube videos and 9:16 for Shorts. For WordPress or a store, find the theme or site’s actual display ratio.
- Check whether the number is a recommendation, minimum or generated size. For example, WooCommerce’s 800 × 800 guidance concerns the uploaded product image; WordPress’s 150 × 150 is a common thumbnail default.
- Confirm crop behavior. Decide whether the system crops to fill its frame or proportionally resizes the image. Keep essential text, faces and product details inside a safe area.
- Check formats, upload limits and rendering. Confirm supported file types and maximum file size, then preview the image where it will actually appear.
Higher pixel dimensions do not fix a mismatched aspect ratio or an aggressive crop. Start with the destination’s shape, use a sufficiently detailed source, and test the rendered result at the size viewers will encounter.

The image is blurry
Check the dimensions of the file actually served, not only the original upload. A small derivative enlarged in a large display area can look soft. Verify theme-registered sizes or the API rendition dimensions, and provide an adequately detailed source.
The subject or text is cut off
The destination or theme may be cropping to fill a fixed frame. Confirm the target ratio and crop setting, then reposition key details toward the center or prepare a destination-specific crop.
The image uploads nowhere or exceeds a limit
Check file type and file size against the relevant platform and upload device. In particular, YouTube’s mobile video-thumbnail limit is 2 MB, while desktop allows up to 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails.
The site keeps showing old dimensions
A theme or plugin may be using a separately registered size, or the page may be selecting a responsive source. Inspect the rendered image and the site’s generated derivatives rather than assuming the Media settings control every image context.

The link preview looks different across services
Open Graph supplies metadata; it does not dictate how every destination renders it. Check the preview on the specific service and adjust the source composition if its crop removes important content.
