For bottle-conditioning homebrew, use a bottle specifically made for packaged carbonated beer and check its pressure or carbonation rating; do not assume a stainless-steel or glass growler is suitable. For carrying or serving finished draught beer, either material may work if the exact growler is designed for carbonated beer and its rating is adequate. The choice is about intended use and verified product specifications—not a universal advantage of one material.
First, distinguish conditioning bottles from growlers
Bottle conditioning means packaging beer in individual vessels where carbonation develops after filling. A growler is commonly used to carry or serve draught beer. The categories are not interchangeable just because both containers can hold beer.
The Brewers Association advises using only growlers designed for packaged carbonated beer and having the supplier verify that the vessel’s pressure rating meets or exceeds the pressure produced by the beer’s carbonation. Its growler-handling guidance is the relevant check before using one for carbonated beer.

What matters when choosing a homebrew bottle
Intended use and pressure rating
Choose a vessel sold for packaging carbonated beer, then follow the maker’s stated limit. Ratings are product-specific: MoreBeer lists its 12-ounce traditional amber longneck bottle with a pressure rating of up to 3 volumes of carbonation. That is a specification for that listing, not a rating for all glass bottles or stainless-steel vessels. Check the MoreBeer bottle listing and confirm the rating for the exact product you buy.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes 24 amber glass long-neck beer bottles designed for home brewing
- Comes with 48 black oxygen barrier crown caps for secure and effective sealing
- Each bottle is made to withstand carbonation pressure for beer, soda, and similar beverages
- Amber glass helps protect contents from light exposure during storage and fermentation
- Made and packaged in USA; eligible for replacement under a 30-day policy if received damaged or defective
Before filling, inspect bottles for chips or other damage and do not use a damaged container. The rating does not make every bottle with the same material or shape suitable.
Light protection
Clear glass does not protect beer from light as well as dark brown glass. Opaque stainless steel also blocks light. The Brewers Association’s growler guidance identifies dark brown glass and opaque materials such as stainless steel or ceramic as protective against light-related “skunking”; it does not establish a shelf-life or flavor advantage in measurable terms.

- PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA: FastRack bottles for beer manufactured in the United States tend to have a stronger, thicker glass than imported glass bottles. Unlike some brown beer bottles from China, United States.
- SATISFACTION GUARANTEE: At FastRack we pride ourselves on creating products that can be trusted by our customers. Buyer satisfaction is our top priority, maybe, sometimes accidents happen during shipping.
Closure and cleaning
The cited MoreBeer longneck bottle has a 26 mm crown-cap finish. Use caps and a capper that match the particular bottle finish; do not assume that size or closure fits another vessel. For a growler, lid and seal suitability depend on the model, so follow the manufacturer’s compatibility and care instructions.

The Brewers Association cautions against using brushes with exposed metal parts on glass or ceramic growlers. For stainless-steel growlers, use the maker’s cleaning directions.

Glass and stainless steel: what the evidence supports
| Factor | Glass | Stainless steel |
|---|---|---|
| Homebrew conditioning use | Amber longneck bottles are sold for packaging beer; verify the exact model’s rating. | No general pressure rating for stainless-steel growlers is established in the cited sources; verify the exact model and intended use. |
| Light protection | Amber or dark brown glass protects better than clear glass. | Opaque stainless steel blocks light. |
| Closure | Some longneck bottles use a crown-cap finish; match caps and capper to the bottle. | Lid and seal performance are model-specific. |
| Cleaning | For glass growlers, avoid brushes with exposed metal parts, per Brewers Association guidance. | Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions; cleaning access depends on vessel design. |
The Brewers Association’s 2019 Draught Beer Quality Manual identifies glass, ceramic, stainless steel, and aluminum as materials used for transporting draught beer in growlers. The sources do not establish that stainless steel universally retains carbonation longer, is always safer, or lasts longer than glass. They also do not provide a controlled material comparison for weight, temperature performance, taste, price, or breakage rates.

How to decide
- For bottle conditioning: Choose a vessel specifically sold for packaged carbonated beer, verify its product-specific carbonation or pressure limit, and use the matching closure.
- For protection from light: Prefer amber glass over clear glass, or use an opaque stainless-steel vessel that is also rated and intended for the use.
- For a growler: Confirm with the supplier that it is designed for packaged carbonated beer and that its rating is adequate for the beer being filled.
- For cleaning: Check opening size, removable components and maker instructions rather than assuming material alone determines ease of cleaning.
