Choose Playwright when you need a conventional end-to-end test suite or dependable automation for known pages and targets. Choose Stagehand when a browser agent needs to interpret page content, wording, or targets that may change. Stagehand v4 can also use direct browser operations for predictable steps, but it is not a drop-in Playwright replacement: Browserbase’s migration guide says it lacks Playwright interoperability and a built-in test runner.
The practical dividing line is whether your main problem is reliably testing known behavior or interpreting an unfamiliar page. These tools overlap in browser control, but they are designed around different primary jobs.
What each framework is for
Playwright: browser automation and testing
Playwright is a browser automation library. Its @playwright/test package adds a test runner, which matters when a project needs an organized end-to-end test suite rather than only browser-control commands. Browserbase’s Stagehand v4 migration guide describes Playwright as having testing features such as fixtures, assertions, and reporting, and says Stagehand has no equivalent built-in runner.
Stagehand: browser agents with optional AI steps
Stagehand is an open-source SDK for browser agents. Its direct page and locator methods can handle ordinary operations such as navigation, clicking, typing, and screenshots. Those deterministic operations do not require model inference. When a task needs interpretation, Stagehand provides three AI primitives: act() performs a described action, observe() proposes actions without executing them, and extract() returns structured data according to a schema.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Stagehand does not take over the whole application workflow. Your code still determines task order, retries, validation, and when the task is complete. A model-assisted action can help identify a target, but it does not make a workflow immune to page changes or remove the need to check the result.
Choose based on the job
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An end-to-end test suite with a runner, fixtures, assertions, and reporting | Playwright | Stagehand v4 has no equivalent test runner; a Stagehand project needs a separate runner for that job. |
| Known pages and stable selectors | Playwright or Stagehand’s direct page and locator methods | Use deterministic browser calls when the target and action are already known; AI inference is not necessary for every step. |
| An agent that must interpret page wording or context-dependent targets | Stagehand | act(), observe(), and extract() offer model-assisted interpretation, though application code must still validate results and handle failures. |
| An existing Playwright codebase | Usually keep Playwright | Stagehand v4 cannot accept a Playwright Page in act(); adopting it means porting flows rather than adding AI primitives to the existing page object. |
| Requirements for browser engines beyond Chromium | Evaluate Playwright against the exact requirement | The Stagehand v4 migration guide documents Chromium-only support. Confirm current Playwright browser and version requirements in its official documentation before committing. |
| A task whose only output is a website screenshot or PDF | Consider a screenshot API rather than a general browser framework | A screenshot service can avoid owning browser setup and automation logic when no multi-step browser workflow is needed. |
Where Stagehand v4 differs from Playwright
Browserbase’s migration guide, last updated August 22, 2026, is the basis for the version-specific differences below. Treat them as Stagehand v4 guidance and recheck that guide if you are adopting a later version.
No Playwright Page interop
The guide says a Playwright Page cannot be passed to Stagehand’s act(). That prevents a simple incremental migration in which an existing Playwright flow keeps its browser page and adds Stagehand interpretation only for a few difficult steps. Plan to port the flow to Stagehand’s own browser interface if you choose it.

A smaller deterministic surface
The guide describes Stagehand’s deterministic API as smaller and says it does not provide Playwright’s auto-waiting, getBy* locator family, expect(), or request interception. It also has no @playwright/test equivalent. This is not a claim that Stagehand cannot perform browser tasks; it means familiar Playwright conveniences should not be assumed to exist in Stagehand v4.
Waiting behavior needs attention when porting
Stagehand v4’s default navigation wait is documented as domcontentloaded. The migration guide contrasts this with Playwright’s goto(), which waits for load. If a ported task depends on subresources being ready, specify the required wait state rather than relying on defaults. The Stagehand guide recommends explicit waits or retry loops where needed.
Runtime and browser setup
For the setup described in the v4 migration guide, local runs require Node.js 22.18 or later and an already installed Chrome. Browserbase-hosted runs do not require a local browser installation. These are version-scoped setup facts from the guide last updated August 22, 2026, not a promise about later releases.

A practical pattern for agent workflows
- Check for a supported service API first. If the task is available through an API, using it may be simpler than automating a browser.
- Use direct browser calls for predictable steps. Navigate to known locations and operate on known targets without invoking a model for work your code can specify deterministically.
- Use
observe()when you want candidate actions before execution. Inspect what the agent proposes, then decide in application logic whether to proceed. - Use
act()for a genuinely ambiguous action. Describe the intended action in context when a fixed target or selector is not dependable. - Use
extract()for schema-shaped information. Define the expected structure, then validate returned values in your own code before using them. - Check completion explicitly. Keep retries, error handling, and the decision that a task succeeded in the surrounding application. Add human review where an action is sensitive or consequential.
This division—deterministic operations where possible, model interpretation where useful—avoids treating every click as an AI problem. It also keeps the important limits visible: page changes can still break a workflow, and the application remains responsible for deciding whether a result is correct.
Testing, reliability, and migration costs
If you need a test runner
For a test suite that depends on a runner, fixtures, assertions, and reporting, Playwright is the more direct fit based on the Stagehand v4 migration guide. If you use Stagehand for browser work and separately need those testing capabilities, bring a runner such as Vitest or Jest. The guide does not describe a built-in Stagehand replacement for Playwright’s test tooling.
If your page is stable
Stable pages and known targets favor ordinary deterministic automation. Stagehand’s direct methods can serve that role without model inference, so choosing Stagehand does not mean every step must be interpreted by a model. But an existing Playwright project still faces the v4 interop limitation: mixing the two through the same Playwright Page is not supported by the cited migration guide.

If page content varies
Stagehand’s agent-oriented primitives may be useful when the target depends on wording or context rather than a fixed selector. They do not guarantee a successful workflow: validate extracted values, verify consequential actions, and handle changed pages and failed steps in application code. The sources provide no independent success-rate comparison between the frameworks.
Performance and cost
Stagehand’s hosting and model inference are separate choices. It can run with a local browser or Browserbase-hosted browser infrastructure; local AI calls require a model-provider key or a custom inference callback. Browserbase’s services described by the sources include Model Gateway and session replay. No current prices or independently verified latency benchmarks are established here, so compare the actual model, hosting, and workload costs for your deployment instead of assuming one framework is faster or cheaper.

If you only need to capture a URL as an image or PDF, a full browser automation framework may be more machinery than the task requires. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try for screenshot-only work: it returns a screenshot or PDF from a GET request, removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. It is not a substitute for a multi-step browser agent or test runner.

Common decision mistakes
- Choosing Stagehand because it is described as an agent SDK, then expecting a test runner. Stagehand v4 does not include a Playwright-equivalent runner; use Playwright for that testing job or add a separate runner.
- Assuming Stagehand is a Playwright plugin. The v4 guide documents no Playwright Page interop, so plan for a port rather than a drop-in integration.
- Using AI for a fixed, known interaction. Direct browser methods are available in Stagehand and do not require inference; reserve model-assisted steps for interpretation.
- Assuming model output is proof of success. Validate extracted data and verify task completion in application logic.
- Relying on implicit readiness after migration. The documented default wait states differ; explicitly wait for the condition your task requires.
- Assuming local and hosted execution have identical prerequisites. The described local Stagehand v4 setup needs Chrome installed, while Browserbase-hosted runs do not need a local browser.
Verdict
Playwright is the safer starting point for conventional end-to-end testing, stable targets, and projects built around its test tooling. Stagehand is the better fit when an agent must interpret page context, provided you are prepared to manage validation, waiting, retries, and a separate runner if your project needs one. For predictable tasks, use deterministic browser calls in either approach; reserve AI interpretation for the steps that actually need it.
