In .NET, “value types live on the stack; reference types live on the heap” is a useful first mnemonic, but it is not a reliable rule for locating every value. A value can be stored in a local stack frame or inline inside another value or object; a reference-type object is managed on the heap. Boxing can also copy a value type into a new heap object. To understand where data lives, look at what contains it, how long it must live, and whether an operation allocates an object.
What the stack-versus-heap distinction actually tells you
Value types and reference types differ first in how values are represented and copied—not in a universal promise about physical location. Microsoft’s value types documentation explains that a value type can be stack-allocated or stored inline within a structure, while reference types are heap-allocated.
A local int value, for example, may be held in a method’s stack frame. But a value-type field inside a class instance is stored inline as part of that containing object, which is on the managed heap. A reference variable holds a reference to an object; the variable and the object it refers to are distinct things. The reference may be stored in a local context or as a field, while the referenced class object is managed on the heap.
How boxing puts a value-type copy on the heap
Boxing occurs when a value type is converted to object or to an interface it implements. The runtime allocates a managed-heap object and copies the value into it. Microsoft’s boxing and unboxing guide describes boxing as allocating and constructing an object.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
int i = 123;
object o = i; // Boxes i: creates a heap object containing a copy.
i = 456; // The boxed copy remains 123.
Unboxing retrieves the value from the boxed object. Because boxing creates an object and does extra work beyond a simple assignment, avoid unnecessary boxing in performance-sensitive code; do not assume a universal numeric speed difference without measuring the specific workload.
What stackalloc does—and when to avoid it
The stackalloc expression allocates a block of memory on the stack for the method’s execution. For example:

Span<int> numbers = stackalloc int[3];

numbers[2] = 30;
Microsoft Learn’s C# reference states: “A stack-allocated memory block created during the method execution is automatically discarded when that method returns.” Stack-allocated memory is not reclaimed by the garbage collector. Its available capacity depends on the execution environment, so keep allocations small and bounded, avoid putting them in loops, and use an array for larger buffers. The contents are undefined until initialized: write values before reading them.
Why Span<T> does not mean “stack memory”
Span<T> is a view over contiguous memory, not a claim about where that memory is stored. Its backing memory might belong to an array, a stackalloc buffer, or unmanaged memory. Microsoft’s Span<T> documentation describes the type and its uses.

A span is a ref struct with lifetime restrictions designed to keep it from escaping into the managed heap. It cannot be boxed or stored in a class field. Its use across async and iterator boundaries is also subject to C# language-version rules; allowances have changed over time, so check the rules for the language version your project uses rather than assuming all versions behave alike.
When Memory<T> is a better fit
If a memory wrapper must be stored on the managed heap or live beyond a span’s restricted context—including some async workflows—use Memory<T> where appropriate. Unlike Span<T>, it can be stored on the heap. Microsoft’s Memory<T> and Span<T> guidance explains the distinction and the types’ intended uses. The key point is that the wrapper’s lifetime rules and the backing buffer’s storage location are separate questions.

What the garbage collector manages
When the CLR creates an object, it allocates space for that object on the managed heap. The garbage collector monitors allocation activity, identifies objects the application no longer uses, and reclaims their memory. Microsoft’s garbage collection fundamentals describe how that managed-heap process works. A stackalloc block instead ends with its method execution; the garbage collector does not reclaim it.

A practical way to reason about storage
- Location: Ask what contains the value. It may be local, inline in a containing value or object, or part of a managed-heap object.
- Lifetime: A
stackallocblock lasts for its method execution; a reachable managed-heap object remains available while the application uses it. - Allocation: Check whether the operation creates an object. Boxing a value type does; assigning a value to another value-type variable does not itself imply boxing.
- Buffer view: Choose
Span<T>for a restricted-lifetime view, andMemory<T>when the wrapper needs to be stored or persist across a boundary that a span cannot cross.
