SSLyze is an open-source command-line scanner and Python library for examining SSL/TLS configurations. It checks certificates, supported protocols and ciphers, elliptic curves, and several known TLS weaknesses. You can scan web servers and services such as SMTP, LDAP, and PostgreSQL, then use JSON output or the Python API to automate analysis.
What SSLyze checks
SSLyze connects to a TLS-enabled service and tests how it is configured. Its documented scan-command families cover certificate information, cipher suites, supported elliptic curves, session resumption, TLS 1.3 early data, and downgrade prevention. It also checks for known issues and attack classes where supported by the release, including ROBOT, CRIME, Heartbleed, OpenSSL CCS injection, and insecure renegotiation.
The exact checks available depend on the SSLyze release and the target service. A scan reports what it observes; it does not by itself fix server settings or establish that an entire application is secure.
Which services SSLyze can scan
SSLyze is not limited to websites. In addition to HTTPS, it supports TLS services including SMTP, XMPP, LDAP, POP, IMAP, RDP, PostgreSQL, and FTP. This is useful when an organization needs to assess mail, directory, database, or file-transfer endpoints alongside web servers.

Install SSLyze
The official project documents installation through PyPI, Docker, and a precompiled Windows executable. For a Python environment, install or upgrade the package with:
python -m pip install --upgrade sslyzeThe current PyPI listing identifies version 6.3.1, released March 29, 2026. Its package metadata requires Python 3.10 or newer and lists the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPLv3). Package details can change; check the PyPI project page for the current version and metadata. The project also documents Docker and Windows executable options in its GitHub repository.

Scan a website from the command line
For a basic scan, run SSLyze as a Python module and provide the target hostname:
python -m sslyze example.comReplace example.com with a hostname you are authorized to assess. SSLyze connects to the service and evaluates its TLS behavior. Consult the installed release’s help output and the project documentation for command options, scan selection, and handling services that use a non-default port.

Use scan results in scripts and CI/CD
SSLyze offers two automation routes: it can save scan results as JSON for downstream processing, and it exposes a documented Python API for applications that need structured access to scans. The API represents each check as a ScanCommand; documented command families include certificate information, cipher suites, elliptic curves, ROBOT, session resumption, CRIME, TLS 1.3 early data, and downgrade prevention.
For CI/CD, SSLyze can compare a server’s configuration with Mozilla’s recommended TLS configuration and return a non-zero exit code when the target does not comply. That behavior lets a pipeline treat a failed policy check as a gate. The project also supports selecting a Mozilla profile or supplying a custom TLS configuration; choose a baseline that matches your service’s compatibility and security requirements before making the result a release blocker.

When SSLyze is a good fit
- Repeatable TLS audits: Run the same checks across deployments or as part of a release pipeline.
- More than HTTPS: Assess supported TLS services such as SMTP, LDAP, and PostgreSQL, not just browser-facing sites.
- Programmatic reporting: Process JSON results or call the Python API rather than relying only on interactive terminal output.
- Policy enforcement: Use Mozilla or custom TLS profiles with exit-code behavior to flag configurations that do not meet a chosen baseline.
The project describes SSLyze as fast and battle-tested, and says it is used to scan hundreds of thousands of servers each day. Those are project statements; the cited project materials do not provide a dated, independent performance study or methodology to verify them as measured statistics.
