Use Server-Sent Events (SSE) when a browser mainly needs to receive updates, WebSockets when a browser and server need to exchange messages over one persistent connection, and WebRTC when the feature needs interactive audio, video, or peer-oriented data communication. These technologies solve different communication problems; none is universally fastest or best.
How SSE, WebSockets, and WebRTC differ
| Technology | Communication pattern | Good fit | Key planning concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSE | Server-to-browser event stream over HTTP | Notifications, status updates, and live feeds | HTTP streaming and event parsing |
| WebSockets | Bidirectional messaging between a client and server | Chat, interactive controls, collaborative updates, and two-way application messaging | Persistent connection lifecycle, server message handling, and security checks |
| WebRTC | A suite for interactive real-time communication, including peer-oriented media and data use cases | Calls, interactive audio/video, collaboration, games, and peer data exchange | Signaling, media transport, and connectivity across firewalls and NATs, possibly using relays |
The choice follows the communication pattern, not the word “real-time.” SSE and WebSockets are browser-facing ways to exchange events or messages with a server. WebRTC is a broader set of protocols and browser APIs designed for interactive communications, including audio and video.
When should you use SSE?
Choose SSE when the browser mostly listens for updates sent by a server. The WHATWG HTML Standard defines the EventSource interface for pushing data to web pages over HTTP. The server sends an event stream with the text/event-stream MIME type; messages can contain data lines and named event types, while the default event type is message. WHATWG’s server-sent events specification describes the interface and event-stream format.

A browser can still send data separately with ordinary HTTP requests; those requests do not turn the EventSource stream into a bidirectional channel. This makes SSE a natural fit for live notifications, status changes, and feeds when client messages are occasional or handled separately.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When should you use WebSockets?
Choose WebSockets when both the browser and server need to send messages through the same ongoing connection. The browser’s WebSocket interface supports bidirectional communication with server-side processes, and RFC 6455 specifies two-way communication over a single TCP connection. The WHATWG WebSockets Standard defines the browser interface; IETF RFC 6455 describes the protocol.
The connection begins with an HTTP opening handshake and then upgrades to WebSocket framing. This pattern can suit chat, interactive controls, and applications that exchange frequent messages in both directions. It does not, by itself, provide WebRTC-style media transport for interactive audio and video.

Plan for connection and security management
A WebSocket server must handle connection lifecycle, authentication and authorization, message formats, and failure behavior. RFC 6455 discusses the browser origin model as a security consideration: validate the Origin where appropriate, but do not treat that check as a replacement for authenticating and authorizing users. A non-browser client may not provide a trustworthy origin.
When do you need WebRTC?
Choose WebRTC when interactive audio, video, or peer-oriented communication is a core requirement. It is not simply a WebSocket with different syntax: it is a suite of protocols and APIs covering interactive communication, media transport, and data transports. IETF RFC 8825 describes WebRTC building blocks for interactive audio and video in browser-based applications, and RFC 8834 covers media transport and RTP in the WebRTC framework.

WebRTC applications commonly need a signaling mechanism to exchange connection setup information. The WebRTC standards do not prescribe one universal signaling protocol or a particular signaling server. Nor should you assume media will always travel directly between peers: the transport specifications account for intermediate network equipment, including firewalls, NAT boxes, and relays. RFC 8835 describes WebRTC transports and these network interactions.
Which one should you use? A practical decision process
- Start with direction. If updates mainly travel from server to browser, consider SSE. If both sides need to send messages through one persistent channel, consider WebSockets.
- Identify the endpoints. Decide whether the feature is primarily browser-to-server messaging or whether interactive peer communication is central.
- Check for audio or video. If the feature needs interactive real-time media, WebRTC is the relevant standards family among these three.
- Account for the network path. For WebRTC, plan how connection setup and connectivity across NATs and firewalls will work, including whether relay infrastructure is needed.
- Define operational requirements. Work out connection lifetime, reconnection behavior, authentication, authorization, message ordering and delivery needs, observability, server capacity, and deployment behavior for the chosen design.
- Measure your actual workload. Test with the target browsers, networks, message sizes, concurrency, and infrastructure before making latency, throughput, cost, or scalability claims.
Can an application use more than one?
Yes. A system can use different mechanisms for different parts of a feature, such as HTTP for setup and WebRTC for media, when its implementation calls for that division. Choose each mechanism for the job it performs rather than treating the three as interchangeable alternatives.

The standards establish intended communication patterns, not a universal performance ranking. They do not show that SSE, WebSockets, or WebRTC will always be fastest, cheapest, or easiest to scale for a particular deployment; those outcomes depend on the application and infrastructure.
