Running a video encoder 24/7 does not automatically wear out an SSD; what matters is how much data the workload writes to each drive and how that compares with the drive’s endurance rating. If the encoder streams directly to a network service, it may write little video data to the SSD, while saved output, temporary files, caches, and scratch data can add writes. There is no direct long-duration test in the reviewed research that establishes a lifespan for a specific SSD running 24/7 encoding.

To assess your setup, identify where writes go, measure them over a representative period, and compare the result with the exact drive’s TBW rating and warranty terms. Treat TBW as a workload-based endurance rating, not a countdown to failure.

What determines SSD wear during encoding?

NAND flash wears through program/erase activity. Host writes contribute to that activity, and an SSD’s controller may write more data internally than the host sent; this relationship is called write amplification. KIOXIA defines the write amplification factor as the ratio of data written to NAND flash to data written by the host.

Runtime alone is not an endurance measure. The relevant writes may include encoded files, temporary output, application caches, scratch data, logs, and operating-system activity. If the encoder sends a live stream over the network without saving the video locally, the stream’s bitrate does not by itself tell you how many bytes the SSD receives.

Bitrate can estimate saved output, not total SSD wear

If you save an encoded stream to disk continuously, bitrate gives a rough estimate of the video file’s size. For example, 5 Mbps is about 2.25 GB per hour using decimal units, or about 54 GB over 24 hours. That estimate applies to the saved video stream; it is not a measurement of total host writes or internal NAND writes. Other workload activity and write amplification can change the drive’s total endurance use.

Large-block sequential writes typically have lower write amplification than small-block random writes. Free space, overprovisioning, firmware, and drive design also affect endurance. As SNIA explains, SSD endurance varies with workload and available free space, so an encoding label alone cannot predict drive life.

Understand TBW and DWPD

TBW (terabytes written) describes a total amount of writes associated with a drive’s specified endurance and warranty context. DWPD (drive writes per day) expresses full-capacity writes per day over a specified lifetime. These ratings help compare a measured workload with a drive’s specifications; they are not exact failure dates or guarantees that an individual drive will fail at a particular write total.

Kingston gives examples to explain these measures: a 1.92 TB SSD rated for 3,504 TBW, and a 7.68 TB SSD rated for 14,016 TBW over five years, equivalent to 1 DWPD. These are explanatory examples, not typical ratings for drives of those capacities. Check the specification and warranty for the exact model and capacity you own or are considering.

How to estimate your encoding workload

  1. Identify every drive that receives writes: the output destination, temporary or cache locations, scratch storage, and the system or logging drive.
  2. Record host writes over a representative period using your operating system, a drive utility, or supported SMART/NVMe reporting. Names and units vary by model, so consult the drive maker’s documentation.
  3. Estimate typical daily writes and project them over your expected operating period. Compare that estimate with the exact model’s TBW rating and warranty terms. For an enterprise drive, also consider its stated DWPD and rated lifetime.
  4. Check the drive’s remaining-life or media-wear reporting periodically. Interpret vendor-specific indicators using the manufacturer’s documentation, and keep backups regardless of the endurance estimate.
  5. If measured writes are high relative to the rating, reduce unnecessary scratch writes, redirect temporary data to a suitable drive, or consider a higher-capacity or higher-endurance model.

When should you consider a high-endurance SSD?

Consider a high-endurance SSD when measured writes are high relative to the exact drive’s rating or when the workload requires a drive specified for sustained write use. Compare capacity, price, TBW and warranty, workload suitability and DWPD where relevant, sustained-write and thermal documentation, and available health reporting. A high-endurance model is not a universal fix: readers with modest measured writes may not need one.

Sandisk’s 2025 solution brief categorizes professional or commercial 8K video editing and 24/7 NAS use as high-write use cases, and says some professional content-creator workflows can exceed 200 GB written per day. That is contextual evidence about those use cases, not a measurement of every encoder or a prediction for your setup.

FAQ

Will encoding video all day wear out my SSD?

It can contribute to wear if the workload writes data to the SSD, but continuous runtime alone does not determine endurance. Measure writes to the relevant drive and compare them with its model-specific rating.

How many TBW does video encoding use?

There is no single TBW amount for video encoding. It depends on what the encoder writes to each drive, including output files and temporary data, as well as other workload activity. Monitor host writes rather than inferring total drive wear from the encoding schedule alone.

Does streaming directly online write the video to my SSD?

Not necessarily. A live stream sent over the network may not save the video locally, but the encoder, operating system, or other software may still write caches, temporary files, logs, or other data. Check which drives receive writes in your setup.

Should I use an enterprise SSD for a 24/7 encoder?

Not automatically. First measure your writes and compare them with the exact drive’s TBW and warranty. If the measured workload is high relative to the rating, compare suitable higher-endurance options and their workload specifications.

Is a TBW rating the point when an SSD will fail?

No. TBW is an endurance rating tied to specified conditions and warranty terms, not a precise failure instant. Actual workload and drive design matter, and firmware health reporting can provide additional information about the drive’s condition.
