Find out which link fails: encoder to SRS, SRS to YouTube, or the stream YouTube receives. Compare logs, YouTube’s stream-health message, and network measurements from a failure with a stable period before changing settings.
First identify where the stream is published
There are two common paths. If your encoder sends directly to YouTube, troubleshoot that connection and YouTube’s ingest health; skip the SRS relay checks. If your encoder publishes to an SRS server and SRS forwards the stream, investigate both network legs separately. SRS documents accepting an RTMP publish and forwarding the stream to another RTMP server (SRS RTMP documentation; SRS forwarding documentation).
- Encoder → YouTube: The encoder’s connection to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint is the only publishing leg.
- Encoder → SRS → YouTube: Check whether the encoder remains connected to SRS, then whether SRS’s outbound forward remains connected to YouTube. One can fail while the other stays up.
Write down the configured outbound destination and whether SRS is expected to forward continuously. The cited SRS RTMP documentation is for version 7.0 Unstable, while the forwarding page is for version 5. Check the version actually deployed and its matching configuration documentation; do not assume every directive behaves identically across versions.
Capture evidence during a drop
Record the exact UTC time, how long the interruption lasts, the YouTube stream-health message, the encoder log, and—if used—the SRS log. Compare that failure window with a stable window, including one at night if possible. Look for which connection closes first and whether it reconnects successfully. This is more useful than treating “it happens at night” as a diagnosis.

- If the encoder’s publish to SRS stays up but SRS’s forward closes, focus on the SRS host’s outbound route, process and resource logs, target URL and credentials, and reconnect behavior.
- If both legs drop, compare the encoder’s local network, router, and broadband observations at the same time.
- If the connection stays open but YouTube reports a stream-health issue, check the reported video settings and incoming signal before blaming the network.
Check YouTube’s stream settings and health message
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264, its recommended bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate:

These are YouTube recommendations, not a measurement of your available upload bandwidth. The guide also gives recommendations for other configurations and codecs; consult the current YouTube encoder settings and live-streaming guide for the format you use. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test under the conditions when drops occur rather than assuming a connection can sustain its advertised or daytime speed.

Read the actual stream-health message before changing settings. YouTube’s documented messages cover bitrate that is too high or low, frame-rate and GOP/keyframe issues, codec problems, and insufficient incoming video to maintain smooth streaming. Use the message to narrow the problem rather than lowering quality or changing several encoder settings at once (YouTube Live API stream-health documentation).
Verify RTMPS connection details
If you publish over RTMPS, check the protocol, ingestion endpoint, application path, port 443, and TLS configuration. The hostname is needed for SNI authentication. A wrong endpoint or application name, or a TLS/SNI mismatch, can prevent a valid connection and resemble an intermittent network failure. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion requirements when verifying the destination.

Measure the network path at the time of the problem
Repeat upload-speed, latency, and packet-loss observations when the stream usually fails, then compare them with a stable period. Where practical, keep the test conditions consistent and note whether the encoder is wired or on Wi-Fi. These observations may help isolate the local access link, but a speed test alone cannot establish which route or component caused a stream interruption.
If the encoder uses Wi-Fi, temporarily connect it by Ethernet and compare the result. This is a way to rule in or out the local wireless segment—not a demonstrated cure for an ISP route, an SRS-host fault, or a YouTube ingestion issue. TRAI includes peak-hour network-link utilization among broadband quality dimensions, but that network-level metric does not diagnose an individual subscriber’s route or establish nighttime throttling (TRAI performance indicator reports).

SRS’s SRT documentation discusses packet recovery and late-packet behavior under jitter (SRS SRT documentation). That background does not make SRT a drop-in replacement for YouTube RTMPS ingestion or show that changing protocols will fix a particular nighttime drop.

The encoder loses its connection to SRS
- Use the encoder log and timestamps to confirm that the publish to SRS closes first.
- Compare the local network and broadband observations during a drop and a stable period. If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, include a temporary Ethernet comparison.
- Check whether the encoder reconnects, and record how long it takes. If the connection remains unstable, use the observations and logs to narrow the fault to the local link, broadband path, or the SRS service rather than changing unrelated YouTube settings.
SRS stays connected to the encoder but loses YouTube
- Check SRS logs and process/resource information at the failure time, then verify the configured outbound target and credentials.
- Confirm the RTMP or RTMPS endpoint and, for RTMPS, the protocol, application path, TLS, port, and hostname/SNI requirements.
- Check SRS’s forwarding and reconnect behavior against documentation for the deployed version. If SRS repeatedly reconnects but the outbound path fails only in the affected window, correlate that with observations from the SRS host’s outbound network.
YouTube reports a health or video-format problem
- Use the specific health message to check bitrate, frame rate, GOP/keyframe interval, codec, or whether enough video is arriving.
- Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, then measure whether upload capacity can sustain it during the affected period.
- Change the setting indicated by the message and observe whether the same error recurs; avoid making multiple unrelated changes that obscure the result.
What nighttime timing can—and cannot—tell you
A recurring time pattern is a reason to collect time-matched evidence, not proof of congestion or throttling. The available evidence does not identify a particular Indian ISP, city, access technology, route, or nighttime incident as the cause of this symptom, and does not establish how often it occurs in India. An individual diagnosis needs the topology, logs, YouTube health message, and network observations from both failure and stable periods.
