Buffering on an SRS-to-YouTube setup can come from the encoder or publisher, SRS, the VPS or its network route, the delivery protocol, or the player. First determine whether the video is freezing or simply arriving late, then test each link in that order. An Indian VPS location alone does not establish either the cause or the quality of the route.
First identify what “buffering” means
A picture that plays continuously but appears several seconds behind is a latency problem. A picture that freezes, repeatedly pauses to refill, or stops advancing is an interruption or rebuffering problem. They can overlap, but they do not point to the same fix.
SRS’s FAQ warns that latency can involve every link: the publishing tool, SRS, and the player. It also identifies VLC as a possible source of high observed latency. That makes a player comparison useful, but it does not establish that VLC causes every freeze or YouTube buffering symptom.

Trace the stream one link at a time
- Reproduce and label the symptom. Note when it starts, whether it is continuous delay or repeated freezing, and whether it affects the whole stream or only a particular viewer or player.
- Compare playback clients. When investigating delay, compare the same stream in the SRS H5 player and another client. SRS recommends its H5 player as a useful latency check in its FAQ. Treat a difference between players as evidence about the playback path, not proof that the stream itself is healthy or that one player is universally at fault.
- Watch the publisher and SRS while the fault happens. Check the OBS or FFmpeg publishing output and SRS logs at the same time. Look for whether the publisher is still sending, whether SRS is receiving and forwarding, and whether errors or interruptions coincide with what viewers see. If the publisher stops sending, investigate its source, encoder, and connection before changing playback settings.
- Write down the actual protocol path. Record the SRS version, publishing method, ingest protocol, output protocol, and playback client. SRS supports paths including RTMP, HTTP-FLV, HLS, and WebRTC; their behavior and client requirements differ. Compare protocols only with the same source stream and a suitable client, and use the result as a diagnostic clue rather than assuming a protocol change will fix the cause. See the SRS v8 WebRTC documentation.
- Check the VPS under load. During a reproduction, inspect CPU and memory pressure, sustained network throughput, packet behavior, egress limits, and provider-side firewall rules. Ask the VPS provider for the plan’s actual bandwidth and egress terms and for relevant network or route information. A server’s country is not a measurement of its available capacity or its path to a particular endpoint.
- Change one thing, then repeat the same test. Keep the source, client, and other conditions as stable as practical. Record the result before trying another change so that an improvement or regression has a likely explanation.
Use the result to choose the next check
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only one playback client is delayed; another plays closer to live. | The playback client or its protocol path may contribute to observed latency. | Compare the clients with the same stream. For latency diagnosis, include the SRS H5 player; do not infer that this explains freezes elsewhere. |
| The publisher reports interruption, or SRS stops receiving the input. | The problem is at or before publishing into SRS. | Inspect the OBS/FFmpeg output, source, connection, and SRS logs at the interruption time. |
| SRS receives the stream, but output or playback fails across clients. | The SRS output path, protocol, server load, or network may be involved. | Confirm the configured output protocol and SRS version, then inspect logs and resource/network measurements during the fault. |
| WebRTC fails to connect or behaves differently across networks. | UDP reachability or the address SRS advertises may be wrong or inaccessible. | Check both the VPS firewall and provider firewall, and verify the WebRTC candidate/public address configuration for the installed version. |
| Several clients freeze while VPS resource or throughput pressure coincides with the event. | Capacity, egress, or route conditions warrant investigation. | Compare measured load and throughput with the provider’s limits and request provider-specific route evidence before changing plans. |
WebRTC: verify reachability before tuning
The SRS FAQ lists inaccessible UDP ports and incorrect candidate settings among common WebRTC problems. Check firewall rules at both the operating-system and VPS-provider layers, and verify that the address advertised by SRS is reachable by the remote client. A correct server configuration cannot compensate for a blocked network path.

The SRS v8 WebRTC documentation describes UDP and TCP transport options, including an example using TCP port 8000. It also says that remote WHIP publishing from a remote Linux server or another device requires HTTPS in the described setup. These details are version- and endpoint-dependent: confirm that the installed SRS release and the particular client support the mode you choose before changing transport or port settings.
Do not paste historical low-latency settings into an unknown release
The detailed low-latency example available in the SRS v2 low-latency guide is historical, not a universal configuration for current SRS. It discusses options such as GOP caching, queue length, minimum-latency behavior, merged reads, and TCP settings, with tradeoffs involving startup behavior, latency, buffering, and performance. First identify the running SRS version and use the documentation for that release. Do not copy old settings into a different version without confirming their meaning and support.

When the VPS provider is the next stop
If SRS continues receiving and forwarding while multiple playback clients freeze, and the problem coincides with resource pressure, throughput changes, or network errors, take those observations to the provider. Ask for the plan’s sustained bandwidth and egress limits, relevant firewall rules, and route information for the affected destination. Without the provider, region, plan, measurements, and route, there is no sound basis to say the Indian location itself is responsible or that a more expensive VPS will fix the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than troubleshoot this SRS deployment, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed.
