OBS and SRS do different jobs: OBS encodes and publishes video; SRS is a media server that can receive and relay or convert a stream. A VPS running SRS is an optional middle step between OBS and YouTube—not a replacement for OBS. If your computer can reliably publish to YouTube and you do not need a server-side relay or protocol conversion, sending OBS directly to YouTube is simpler. An India VPS is not proven to make a particular YouTube route more reliable; test the actual route before depending on it.

What OBS and SRS each do

OBS creates the encoded audio/video stream. It can publish directly to YouTube, or it can publish to an SRS server. SRS receives streams and can serve, forward, or convert them. The optional relay arrangement is:

OBS or FFmpeg → SRS on a Linux VPS → YouTube ingest

The SRS 8.0 project README demonstrates configuring OBS as a custom publisher to SRS, using rtmp://localhost/live and the example stream key livestream. Those values illustrate OBS publishing to SRS; they are not a complete recipe for forwarding from SRS to YouTube. For the outbound destination, use the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, and verify forwarding configuration against the SRS release you deploy. SRS project README

The SRS project README calls the software “SRS/8.0 (Free) is a simple, high-performance, AI-driven real-time media server.” That is the project’s own description, not independent performance evidence. The README lists RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, MPEG-DASH, and GB28181 support, and recommends Docker. A separately surfaced SRS RTMP guide is for archived version 5.0, so use it for general protocol context rather than assuming its configuration applies to SRS 8.0. When to stream directly and when to add a VPS relay

OBS directly to YouTube

Choose a direct connection if the originating computer and internet connection can sustain the stream and your goal is simply to publish it. This has fewer components to configure and monitor than an intermediate relay.

OBS through SRS on a VPS

Add SRS if your workflow specifically needs a persistent server-side ingest point, a relay, or protocol conversion. SRS can occupy that middle layer, but it does not remove the need for an encoder such as OBS or FFmpeg to create the stream.

A VPS may help a particular setup, but reliability depends on both links—the encoder to VPS and VPS to YouTube—as well as server availability and reconnect behavior. No India-specific route comparison or reliability benchmark establishes that an India VPS improves a given creator’s connection. Treat that as a hypothesis to test, not a guarantee. The optional relay also adds another service to operate.

Set YouTube’s ingest settings before choosing a VPS

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL. It specifies H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, rather than reusing example credentials from an SRS tutorial. Keep the stream key secret: YouTube describes it as the encoder’s stream credential. YouTube Help: encoder settings · YouTube Help: RTMPS

Use bitrate recommendations as input targets, not bandwidth bills

These H.264 figures are YouTube Help recommendations, accessed in 2026; the page did not show a publication year:

Output YouTube minimum YouTube recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Choose a resolution and bitrate YouTube supports and your measured, sustained upload capacity can carry. A relay VPS must send the stream onward continuously; its transfer use is approximately the stream bitrate sustained over time, plus protocol overhead and any additional viewers or destinations served from that VPS. That estimate is not a provider quote: calculate costs using the chosen host’s outbound-transfer rules, overages, and any fair-use limits.

YouTube transcodes live video for different viewer formats and network conditions, but that does not make an unstable input reliable. YouTube advises choosing a quality the connection can sustain, testing settings, monitoring stream health, checking audio and video, and testing backup-encoder failover. How to assess a low-cost VPS in India

Do not choose by advertised monthly price alone. No current India provider price comparison, India-to-YouTube route benchmark, or tested low-cost VPS specification establishes a best provider or plan for this workload. Compare these factors for the exact plan and region you are considering:

  • Total recurring cost: include sustained outbound traffic, overages, taxes, and any required static IP or backup service.
  • Transfer policy: check included data, whether outbound traffic is metered or capped, and whether “unlimited” use is subject to fair-use restrictions.
  • CPU and memory: a pure relay and software video encoding are different workloads. If you plan to transcode on the VPS, establish the needed headroom through testing; there is no benchmark here for a low-cost server.
  • Route quality: test packet loss and stability from the proposed VPS location to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint at your intended bitrate and during representative periods. Do not infer route quality from the server’s country alone.
  • Recovery and operations: check restart controls, health checks, logs, alerting, and how a second publisher could take over.
  • Availability and support: read the plan’s published availability terms and determine what support response applies to that specific plan.

Huawei Cloud documents an example of deploying SRS with Docker on a cloud server; that example does not establish that a particular Flexus plan meets this workload or is the lowest-cost choice. Huawei Cloud: deploy SRS with Docker

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits

A continuous 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as one dependable, complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance separately warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If a reliable archive matters, consider splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions and keeping a separate local recording, then verify the workflow on your channel before relying on it. Copyright, reused content, and continuous playback

Technical ability to loop or relay a video does not establish that you have the rights to stream it or that it will qualify for YouTube monetization. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for the channel and content involved. A long-running stream should also be tested for audio/video quality and monitored for stream-health problems; YouTube’s live-stream guidance recommends testing the setup and backup encoder failover. YouTube Help: live-streaming tips

Troubleshooting a relay or direct stream

Symptom Likely checks What to do
YouTube does not receive the stream Confirm the destination URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room; distinguish the OBS-to-SRS publisher address from the SRS-to-YouTube destination. Correct the destination credentials and verify the SRS forwarding configuration for the deployed release.
Stream health is unstable Check whether sustained upload capacity supports the chosen bitrate, and inspect packet loss and stability on each leg of a relay. Use a bitrate and quality the connection can sustain; test the actual route and monitor YouTube stream health.
Video or audio quality is poor Check the encoder codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and audio/video output. Compare settings with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and test before a continuous session.
The VPS transfer bill is higher than expected Check sustained outbound use, metering, caps, overages, and any traffic served beyond the YouTube feed. Estimate transfer from the actual bitrate and provider policy; do not assume a plan labeled “unlimited” permits unrestricted sustained traffic.
The stream stops or does not resume after a failure Inspect server and encoder logs, restart behavior, health checks, and each network leg. Test reconnection and backup-encoder failover before relying on the system; configure monitoring and recovery appropriate to the chosen deployment.
A 24/7 broadcast is missing or incomplete in the archive Check whether the session exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. For dependable retention, consider shorter sessions and a separate local recording.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live; it is not a camera-streaming service. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It handles any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
