SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is Microsoft’s Windows client for connecting to SQL Server and related Microsoft database services, then querying, configuring, administering, and developing against them. At the research cutoff of September 29, 2026 UTC, SSMS 22 is the current general-availability release; its latest listed patch is 22.10.1, released September 15, 2026. SSMS is a client application, not the database engine itself: installing SSMS does not by itself install or start a SQL Server database.
What SSMS is—and what it is not
SSMS brings common SQL Server work into one Windows application. You can connect to a database service, browse and manage objects, write and execute queries, script database operations, inspect execution plans, and access performance and administration tools. Microsoft also documents workflows for tuning workloads and administering business-intelligence components. See Microsoft’s SSMS overview.
The important distinction is client versus server. SSMS is the interface you use; the Database Engine is the service that stores data and processes queries. The engine may be on the same computer, on a network server, or hosted as a supported Microsoft cloud service. You need a reachable server or service and valid credentials to connect. Installing the client alone does not create a database server.
What is the current SSMS version?
As of September 29, 2026 UTC, Microsoft identifies SSMS 22 as the latest general-availability release. The release notes list version 22.10.1, released September 15, 2026. That update refreshed a Visual Studio component and fixed an issue that could prevent Database Engine Tuning Advisor, SQL Monitor, and SQL Server Profiler from connecting. Check the live SSMS release notes before installing, since releases and fixes change over time.

SSMS 22 is documented as compatible with SQL Server 2014 (12.x) and later. Microsoft also lists Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Synapse Analytics, and SQL database in Microsoft Fabric. Engine compatibility does not guarantee that every auxiliary service, legacy feature, or tool component is supported in every environment; verify the relevant feature’s version-specific documentation when working with older deployments. How to install and update SSMS 22
Microsoft distributes SSMS 22 through a bootstrapper named vs_SSMS.exe, which opens Visual Studio Installer. The current installation guidance says there is no standalone MSI. The installer lets you choose workloads or individual components; optional features should not be assumed to be present in a minimal installation.

- Open Microsoft’s SSMS installation page and review the current requirements and supported services.
- Download and run the SSMS 22 bootstrapper. Use administrator permissions for the initial installation, as Microsoft recommends.
- In Visual Studio Installer, select the workloads or individual components needed for your work, then start installation.
- Allow setup to complete, applying Windows updates or restarting first if pending installations could interfere.
- To update later, open Visual Studio Installer and apply the available SSMS update. The same installer supports documented command-line and offline installation options.
Microsoft allows side-by-side installation of versions, which can be useful when validating a newer client against a workflow before switching. Exact processor, memory, Windows-version, and storage requirements are not repeated here because they can change; consult the current system requirements page rather than relying on an old minimum.
Connect to a server and find your way around
On first use, open SSMS and use the connection dialog to select the server type and enter the server name and authentication details supplied by your administrator or hosting setup. The precise values depend on where the engine runs and how it is configured; do not assume a local server exists just because SSMS is installed. For a remote service, confirm network access and that your account is permitted to connect.

After connecting, Object Explorer provides a tree of server and database objects. Expand a database to inspect its tables, views, programmability objects, and other available nodes. Context menus commonly expose actions such as opening a query window, scripting an object, or changing its properties. Designers provide a visual route for certain object edits, while query windows give you direct control using SQL.
Use a query window to write SQL, choose the intended database context, and execute statements. For changes that affect data or schema, verify the target server and database before running the command. Execution plans help explain how the engine intends to carry out a query; performance tools can help investigate workloads, though the appropriate tool and required components depend on the task and installation.

Microsoft’s components and features guide identifies GitHub Copilot in SSMS and Query Hint Recommendation Tool as preview features. Treat them as previews, not stable general-availability capabilities. SSMS 21 release notes describe Git support for creating and cloning repositories and managing branches; consult those SSMS 21 release notes for that version’s feature context. Do not infer that every feature is installed or enabled by default.

Azure Data Studio retired on February 28, 2026. Microsoft says it no longer receives updates, security fixes, or maintenance, and directs users to Visual Studio Code with the MSSQL extension for continued support. Microsoft’s migration guidance says existing queries, scripts, and SQL database projects work in Visual Studio Code without conversion. It points to SSMS for SQL Server Agent and full administration. Common SSMS problems and what to check
- Connection fails: Confirm that a database engine or service is running and reachable, the server name is correct, the selected authentication method matches the account, and the account has permission. For hosted services, check applicable network and firewall access with the service administrator.
- A tool or feature is missing: Check the SSMS version and Visual Studio Installer component selections. The feature overview distinguishes optional capabilities and preview features; installation of SSMS does not imply every component is present.
- A legacy service behaves differently: Compatibility with SQL Server 2014 and later is not a promise that every legacy component is supported. Check the feature-specific documentation for the engine, service, and client version involved.
- An update or installation will not complete: Use Visual Studio Installer, review pending Windows updates or restart requirements, and retry with the recommended administrator permissions for initial setup. Use Microsoft’s current installation page for offline or command-line procedures.
- Profiler, SQL Monitor, or Database Engine Tuning Advisor cannot connect: If using an older SSMS build, check whether the issue addressed in 22.10.1 applies and update through Visual Studio Installer.
