Spring Framework is the broad foundation; Spring MVC is its Servlet-based web framework; Spring Boot is a separate project that streamlines the setup of Spring applications. They are not three interchangeable alternatives: a common arrangement is a Spring Boot application that uses Spring MVC. For reactive web applications, Spring Framework also offers Spring WebFlux.
What does “Spring” mean?
“Spring” can refer specifically to the Spring Framework or, informally, to the wider family of Spring projects. Here, Spring Framework means the modular foundation that supplies a core container, dependency-injection and configuration capabilities, and infrastructure for concerns such as data access and web applications. As the official Spring Framework overview puts it, “The Spring Framework is divided into modules.”
Spring MVC belongs to that Framework. Spring Boot is a separate project built on it, with conventions and setup features for creating Spring applications. That difference in scope is the key to understanding how they fit together.
How do Spring Framework, Spring MVC, and Spring Boot differ?
| Technology | What it is | Main role | Relationship to the others |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring Framework | A modular application framework | Provides the core container and broad application infrastructure, including web support | The foundation that includes Spring MVC among its web frameworks |
| Spring MVC | Spring Web MVC, commonly called Spring MVC | Builds web applications on the Servlet API using Spring’s MVC infrastructure | A web framework within Spring Framework; it does not replace the Framework |
| Spring Boot | A separate project built on Spring Framework | Offers an opinionated, convention-based way to set up and run Spring applications, including web applications | Can support a Spring MVC application; it does not replace MVC or Spring Framework |
The distinction is about layers, not a head-to-head choice: Spring Framework provides the broader platform, Spring MVC handles the Servlet-based web layer, and Boot helps set up the application. Spring’s Framework overview, Spring Web MVC documentation, and Boot documentation overview describe these roles.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What happens in a typical Spring MVC and Spring Boot application?
- Spring Boot sets up the application. Its conventions and application setup features provide a quick, opinionated path for building Spring applications. Boot’s documentation covers Servlet web applications and embedded Servlet containers.
- Spring MVC handles the web layer. When the application uses the Servlet stack, Spring MVC provides the web framework and processes requests through Spring’s MVC infrastructure.
- Spring Framework supplies the foundation. The application also relies on Framework capabilities such as its core container and dependency-injection support.
This is why “Spring Boot or Spring MVC?” is usually a misleading question. Boot and MVC serve different roles, and they can be used together.
When should you use Spring MVC, Spring Boot, or WebFlux?
Choose Spring MVC for a Servlet-based web application
Spring MVC is the relevant Spring web framework when your application uses the Servlet API. The choice of MVC concerns the web stack and request-handling model.

Use Spring Boot when its application setup fits your needs
Boot can be used alongside Spring MVC when its conventions and setup features are useful. It is not required by the meaning of Spring MVC, nor is it a substitute for the web framework itself.
Consider Spring WebFlux for a reactive web stack
Spring WebFlux is Spring Framework’s reactive-stack web framework. It is a distinct architectural option from Servlet-based Spring MVC, not another name for it. The right choice depends on application requirements; neither Boot nor MVC is universally better.

What about versions and compatibility?
The roles above are conceptual, not a compatibility matrix. Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and Servlet-container version combinations depend on the versions selected for a specific project. Consult the relevant official documentation for those versions before settling on a combination; the sources linked here do not establish a complete compatibility matrix.
