Spring Data JPA auditing works without an HTTP request. For fields annotated with @CreatedBy or @LastModifiedBy, provide an AuditorAware<T> bean that returns the intended actor for the current operation. That actor can be an authenticated user, a scheduled-job identity, or a deliberate value such as system; Spring does not prescribe a universal system username.
How does Spring Data JPA choose the auditor?
Spring Data asks the AuditorAware<T> interface who the current user or system interacting with the application is. The generic type T must match the type of the entity’s actor fields. For example, if @CreatedBy and @LastModifiedBy are stored as strings, provide an AuditorAware<String>.
Spring Security is one possible source, not a requirement. The Spring Data JPA Reference Documentation, section “AuditorAware”, shows obtaining an Authentication from SecurityContextHolder, checking that it is authenticated, and returning its principal. A scheduled task or batch operation can instead return an explicitly chosen service or job identity through the same interface.
What should the audit fields record?
@CreatedByrecords the actor who created the entity.@LastModifiedByrecords the actor who most recently modified it.@CreatedDateand@LastModifiedDaterecord when creation and modification occurred, respectively.
These annotations can be applied selectively. If you only need timestamps, an AuditorAware implementation is not required. The reference identifies CurrentDateTimeProvider as the default date-time provider and allows a custom provider.

How do I set the auditor when there is no HTTP request?
Return a deliberate identity from getCurrentAuditor() for that execution path. The right value depends on what your audit log is meant to preserve: it might be a named scheduled job, a service account, or a generic system actor. Spring’s SPI permits an optional result, but your application must decide whether a missing user is acceptable or should stop the write.

The authentication lookup, principal conversion, fallback policy, and return type must fit your application’s security model and entity fields. If the initiating human must remain attributable, do not replace a missing principal with system unless that loss of attribution is acceptable.

How do I enable auditing and register the provider?
- Enable auditing in configuration with
@EnableJpaAuditing. - Register
AuditingEntityListenerfor audited entities, for example with@EntityListeners(AuditingEntityListener.class), or configure the listener through ORM configuration. - Provide an
AuditorAware<T>bean when using actor annotations. Spring Data discovers a single provider automatically. - If more than one provider is present, set
auditorAwareRefon@EnableJpaAuditingto identify the intended bean.
What changes for asynchronous or background work?
Do not assume request-bound security state automatically exists on another thread. The documented security example reads the current authentication from SecurityContextHolder; choosing and propagating identity for asynchronous work is an application execution-design decision, not a Spring Data JPA auditing rule. Decide which actor should be recorded before the persistence callback runs, and make every execution path follow that policy.

- Availability: determine whether the chosen identity is present when the entity is persisted, including asynchronous work.
- Field compatibility: return the same type used by the entity’s actor fields.
- Missing identity: decide whether to return no auditor, use a defined system identity, or fail the write rather than save an unattributed change.
- Consistency: apply the same interpretation across application instances and execution paths.
The Spring Data JPA Reference Documentation describes the interface as one “you have to implement to tell the infrastructure who the current user or system interacting with the application is.” It leaves the application’s choice of system identity and missing-identity policy to the application.
The cited reference identifies itself as Spring Data JPA 4.1.1. Check the reference and APIs for the Spring Data version used by your application, since this article does not establish compatibility details for every historical release.
