To adjust Spotify’s sound, open the app’s settings and choose music quality for your connection and plan, enable volume normalization for more consistent loudness, or set Crossfade to overlap consecutive tracks. The settings and available options vary by device, plan, market, and app version; Spotify also says some playback settings cannot be changed while Spotify Connect is playing on another device.
Choose a Spotify music quality setting
Higher quality can preserve more audio detail, but it uses more mobile data when streaming and more storage when downloading. Spotify says its app uses Automatic quality by default to help avoid playback stuttering. On mobile and tablet, you can set streaming quality separately for Wi-Fi and cellular data, and choose a separate download quality.
Spotify’s published quality options
Spotify’s current support table lists these approximate music bitrates for app playback. They are Spotify specifications, not independent measurements, and availability depends on plan and playback surface.
Recommended Free Tools
| Setting | Spotify’s published figure | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Approximately 24 kbit/s | Uses less data; Spotify says choosing Low on mobile or tablet also lowers podcast quality to approximately 24 kbit/s. |
| Normal | Approximately 96 kbit/s | A middle option for data use and quality. |
| High | Approximately 160 kbit/s | Uses more data than Normal. |
| Very high | Approximately 320 kbit/s | Listed for Premium in Spotify’s cited support table; uses more data and download storage. |
| Lossless | Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC | Premium option, subject to supported app/device, content, connection method, and stable bandwidth. |
Spotify lists web-player playback separately: AAC 128 kbit/s for Free and AAC 256 kbit/s for the paid tiers shown in its support article. That player does not offer a music-quality selector. Podcast quality is approximately 96 kbit/s on devices other than the web player, where Spotify lists 128 kbit/s. See Spotify’s Audio quality page for the current table.

How to change music quality
- On mobile or tablet: Tap your profile picture, then Settings and privacy → Media Quality. Choose settings for Wi-Fi, cellular streaming, and downloads as needed.
- On desktop: Click your profile picture, then Settings → Audio Quality, and select an available quality.
- If the option is missing or unavailable: Confirm which app and plan you are using, and whether Connect is currently playing to another device. Spotify says relevant quality settings cannot be changed during Connect playback.
When Lossless is available
Spotify describes Lossless as a Premium feature and lists support for mobile app version 9.0.58 and later, desktop version 1.2.67 and later, and some third-party devices. Those specifications do not guarantee every track will play losslessly: the recording, content availability, playback device, connection method, and bandwidth all matter. Spotify recommends a steady 1.5 to 2 Mbps connection for the best lossless listening experience. Bluetooth or a Connect device should not be assumed to preserve lossless playback; check Spotify’s Lossless Audio Quality guidance for compatibility details.
Turn volume normalization on or off
Volume normalization balances quieter and louder songs to create a more uniform listening level. It changes playback loudness, not the fidelity of the source recording. Spotify labels the feature “For: Premium” in its support article.

Where to find volume normalization
- iPhone or iPad: Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Playback → Enable Audio Normalization.
- Android: Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Playback → Volume controls → Volume normalization.
- Desktop: Profile picture → Settings → Audio Quality → Normalize volume.
Spotify provides three levels: Normal is the default, Loud is intended for noisy environments, and Quiet suits quieter surroundings. Spotify warns that Loud can make dynamic differences less pronounced. If you want more consistent levels, normalization may help; if preserving the contrast between soft and loud passages matters more, consider turning it off or avoiding Loud. Spotify notes that mobile settings cannot be changed while Connect is playing on another device. See Volume normalization for its current instructions.

- Desktop: Click your profile picture → Settings → Playback, enable Crossfade songs, then adjust the slider.
A shorter overlap keeps the transition subtle; a longer one makes the tracks blend more noticeably. The effect depends on the tracks and their endings, so choose a setting that suits your listening rather than expecting every pair of songs to blend equally well.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Crossfade, Automix, and gapless playback are different
| Feature | What it does | Where Spotify lists it |
|---|---|---|
| Crossfade | Overlaps tracks by fading one out as the next fades in. | Mobile/tablet: Settings and privacy → Playback → Crossfade. Desktop: Settings → Playback → Crossfade songs. |
| Automix | Creates beat-matched seamless transitions on select Spotify playlists; Spotify says it also works with Shuffle. | Mobile/tablet: Settings and privacy → Playback → Track transitions → Automix. Desktop: Settings → Playback → Automix. Spotify labels it “For: Premium.” |
| Gapless playback | Removes gaps or pauses between tracks rather than overlapping them. | Mobile/tablet: Settings and privacy → Playback → Track transitions. Spotify’s cited article does not list a desktop control. |
Spotify documents these controls in its Transitions between tracks article. If you use Windows desktop Exclusive Mode with a compatible selected audio device, Spotify says Crossfade produces a gap rather than a blend and Automix seamless transitions are disabled. Exclusive Mode takes control of that audio device, so other apps cannot play sound through it at the same time. Details are in Spotify’s Exclusive mode article.

Why a sound setting may be unavailable
Spotify says the relevant settings cannot be changed while Spotify Connect is playing to another device. Stop or disconnect the remote playback, then return to the app where you want to change the setting. If a control still does not appear, its availability or label may differ with your plan, market, device, or app version; check the in-app settings and Spotify’s current local support page.
