If Spotify won’t open, connect, or play songs, start with the least disruptive checks: restart the app, install any update, and confirm Spotify isn’t in Offline mode. Then check your connection and device before clearing the cache or reinstalling. If Spotify is down across devices, changing settings on your phone or computer is unlikely to help.
Before troubleshooting: check for a Spotify outage
Check Spotify’s troubleshooting guidance for its recommended service-status resources: SpotifyStatus and the Spotify Community’s Ongoing Issues board. If there is a service-wide issue, wait for it to be resolved rather than repeatedly changing device settings.
1. Fully close and reopen Spotify
Quit Spotify completely, then launch it again. Simply switching to another app or minimizing the desktop window may leave Spotify running, so use your device’s app switcher or quit command to close it first. Restarting is one of Spotify’s first suggested fixes for technical problems.

An outdated app can cause technical problems. Spotify’s update instructions say an available desktop update is marked by a blue dot beside your profile picture. Open the profile menu and choose “Update Spotify now.” The label and menu can vary by app version.

Spotify Support says, “Reinstalling the app also guarantees the latest version of Spotify,” but try the ordinary update check first because it is less disruptive. See Spotify’s app update instructions.
3. Check your connection and Offline mode
If Spotify opens but won’t connect or play, first see whether other apps or websites work. If they fail too, the issue may be your internet connection rather than Spotify. Try another Wi-Fi network or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to compare.

Also make sure Spotify is not set to Offline mode. When offline, content that has not been downloaded may be unavailable; a grayed-out song does not necessarily mean the app is broken.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Mobile: Tap your profile picture, open Settings and privacy, then Data-saving and offline, and check the Offline setting. Menu wording may differ by version.
- Desktop: Check the Spotify menu on Mac or the File menu on Windows for Offline mode.
Some public or shared networks restrict services, and a desktop firewall may block Spotify. If Spotify works on another network, investigate the original network’s restrictions or firewall settings. Spotify explains these checks in its Offline mode guidance.

4. Clear Spotify’s cache
Spotify includes clearing the cache among its troubleshooting steps for playback and technical problems. A cache clear is worth trying when Spotify opens but behaves incorrectly; it is not a guaranteed fix for an app that will not launch at all.
Use the cache controls available in your Spotify app, since the exact path depends on platform and version. If the app cannot open far enough to reach its settings, move on to the device checks or reinstalling rather than repeatedly attempting this step.

5. Check the device itself
Compare Spotify with another app, and, if possible, try Spotify on another device or in the web player. If Spotify works elsewhere, focus on the original phone or computer.
- Install available operating-system updates and close apps you are not using.
- Spotify’s troubleshooting article advises checking for at least 250 MB of available memory. This is Spotify’s stated troubleshooting threshold, not a universal device requirement.
- On a desktop, check that the firewall allows Spotify.
- On Android, if the device uses an SD card, try removing it temporarily and testing Spotify again.
These checks are included in Spotify’s “Spotify not playing” troubleshooting article.

6. Compare with the Spotify web player
Open Spotify in a supported browser to see whether the problem is limited to the installed app. If the web player works but the app does not, that points toward an app- or device-specific issue; if neither works, check the connection and service status.
Spotify advises updating the browser and trying a private or incognito window. Shared networks may restrict access, and supported browsers vary by device and change over time, so check Spotify’s current web player help rather than relying on an old browser compatibility list.
7. Reinstall Spotify if the earlier fixes fail
Reinstalling is a more disruptive step, so save it for when restarting, updating, connection checks, and device checks have not helped. Follow Spotify’s directions for your platform in its reinstallation guide.
After reinstalling, downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again. If the app still does not work, use the additional troubleshooting options linked from Spotify’s support article.
