A blank splash screenshot usually means you captured the wrong launch phase, tested an unsuitable build, or have a theme, asset, or generated-native-project mismatch. First identify the platform, OS or SDK version, framework, build type, and whether the image is the operating system’s launch window or your app’s first rendered view. Then apply the platform-specific checks below; an Android migration fix is not a Flutter or Expo fix, and iOS requires separate launch-screen guidance.
Start by identifying what is actually blank
Record these details before changing code:
- Platform and OS version (for example, Android 12, Android 11, or iOS).
- Framework and version: native Android, Flutter, Expo/React Native, or another stack.
- Build type: development, preview/internal distribution, or production.
- Cold, warm, or hot launch, and the exact moment the screenshot was taken.
- Whether the image is the system launch window, a handoff between themes, or the app’s first screen.
Android documents splash behavior for cold and warm starts, but not hot starts: “The splash screen never shows during a hot start.” A screenshot taken after the process is already alive can therefore be blank or show no splash at all. Repeat with a true cold launch (stop the app, force-stop it when appropriate, then start it again) and compare the result.

Native Android: fix the system splash and theme handoff
Understand Android 12 and later
Android 12 and later display a system splash screen on cold and warm starts. The default appearance uses the launcher icon and the app theme’s single-color windowBackground. Hot starts do not display it. See the Android splash-screen documentation for the platform rules.
Inspect the theme assigned to the activity that starts first. Confirm that the background is one opaque color and that the icon or drawable is valid. Android defines masking and size constraints for the splash icon; a bitmap or vector that is incorrectly prepared can be clipped, masked unexpectedly, or appear invisible against the background. Check the resource name, density qualifiers, and that the package actually contains the drawable in the built APK.

For Android 12+, review windowSplashScreenBackground and windowSplashScreenAnimatedIcon (or the corresponding AndroidX attributes when using the compatibility library). Keep icon animation within Android’s recommended maximum of 1,000 milliseconds.
Migrate a legacy custom splash
An app that still relies on a pre-Android-12 custom windowBackground implementation can show Android’s default splash instead of the intended design. A dedicated old splash activity can also create a second splash after the system screen. Android’s migration guide warns: “If you don’t migrate your app, your app launch experience on Android 12 and later might be degraded or have unintended results.”
- Add the AndroidX SplashScreen compatibility dependency recommended in the migration guide.
- Give the starting activity a
Theme.SplashScreen-based starting theme. - Set
postSplashScreenThemeto the normal application theme. - Declare that starting theme on the launcher activity in
AndroidManifest.xml. - Call
installSplashScreen()beforesuper.onCreate()in the starting activity. - Remove or adapt the old dedicated splash activity so it cannot render a duplicate screen.
After rebuilding, test both a cold and warm launch on Android 12 or newer and on any older Android versions your app supports. A theme resource that exists only in one configuration can make the result appear correct on one device and blank on another.
Flutter on Android: verify the launch and normal themes
Flutter transitions from an Android launch theme to a normal theme while the first Flutter frame is prepared. Open the launcher activity configuration and verify that FlutterActivity uses the launch theme and declares metadata for io.flutter.embedding.android.NormalTheme. The metadata must point to a real style resource.

Make the handoff visually continuous
Compare the launch theme background with the first Flutter widget tree and with the NormalTheme background. Flutter notes that the normal background can briefly appear after the splash disappears and during orientation changes or activity restoration. If that color is transparent, missing, or sharply different from the first frame, a screenshot can look blank even though the app is running.
For Android 12 and later, configure the platform SplashScreen attributes as well as Flutter’s resources. Projects supporting pre-12 and post-12 devices commonly need separate resource qualifiers. Confirm that the icon is present in every required resource directory and that release builds include the same styles as debug builds.
Expo: assets, config plugins and the right build artifact
Check the plugin and asset
Verify that the expo-splash-screen config plugin is enabled, its asset path exists, and the referenced image is PNG. Confirm the configured background color, dark-mode settings, and any Android- or iOS-specific values. A typo in the path or an unsupported format can produce a default or apparently blank launch screen.
Know whether native files are generated
An app-config edit changes native splash resources only when the project’s workflow generates them. If Android and iOS directories are maintained manually, changing Expo config alone does not update those files. Run the project’s chosen prebuild or apply equivalent native changes in the checked-in directories, then rebuild the binary.

Test an internal or production build
Expo advises against judging splash behavior in Expo Go or a development build: their own launch screens can compete with your app’s content. Use an internal distribution or production build. If an affected iOS development setup uses SDK 52 or earlier and retains an old launch screen between builds, Expo documents expo run:ios --no-build-cache as a version-specific cache workaround. Do not treat that command as a universal iOS repair.
iOS: keep the scope narrow until the framework is known
Apple’s launching guidance describes a static launch screen that corresponds to the app’s first screen. It should not behave like a branded splash animation or an About page; launch content does not change while it is shown. Avoid transferring Android theme or SplashScreen API steps to iOS.
The correct repair depends on whether the app uses UIKit storyboards, SwiftUI, Flutter, Expo, or another framework, and on how the launch screen is generated in the build. Without those details, the safe diagnosis is to inspect the launch-screen configuration, asset catalog, and build artifact, then reproduce on a cold install. A specific storyboard or native fix requires the framework and build information.
Use this diagnostic sequence when the image is still blank
- Reproduce consistently: note device model, OS, app version, launch type, and screenshot timing.
- Capture a screen recording: determine whether the blank frame is the system window, a theme transition, or the first app view.
- Validate resources in the built artifact: check that the icon, color, style, and plugin-generated files are present in the APK, AAB, or IPA.
- Compare debug and release: release-only failures often indicate resource shrinking, stale generated files, or a different manifest.
- Test a clean install: uninstall, clear build outputs or caches appropriate to the framework, install the target artifact, and repeat a cold start.
- Check the first rendered view: if the system splash is correct but the next screen is blank, debug app initialization, navigation, data loading, and runtime exceptions rather than splash resources.
Common failures and targeted fixes
The Android icon is missing
Confirm the drawable name in the theme, package it in the correct resource directory, and verify contrast against the single-color background. Test the same artifact, not an older install.

A second splash appears
Remove the legacy splash activity or stop it from launching after the AndroidX system splash. Keep one starting activity and call installSplashScreen() before super.onCreate().
Flutter shows a white or transparent flash
Set a concrete NormalTheme background that matches the first Flutter frame, and ensure the launcher activity metadata references it. Recheck orientation and activity restoration paths.
Expo changes do nothing
Confirm the plugin, PNG path, and prebuild workflow. If native directories are hand-managed, update them directly or regenerate them, then build a new internal or production binary.
Only Expo Go looks wrong
Move the test to an internal distribution or production build. Expo Go and development builds can display competing splash content and are not reliable evidence of the shipped launch screen.

The screenshot itself may be misleading
Automation can capture during a transition, after a hot start, or before a webview and app state finish loading. Add a deterministic wait in the test harness and record whether the launch was cold, warm, or hot.
