To make Nintendo Switch games download faster, first check the console’s connection speed, then test Wi-Fi placement, network congestion, and—if available—a wired connection. For a download that only stalls in Sleep Mode, check the connection conditions or finish the download while the console is awake. These steps help identify the cause; none guarantees a faster download.
Check the Switch’s connection speed first
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Internet, then Test Connection.
- Note the reported download speed so you can compare it after each change.
Nintendo’s test reports download and upload speeds and helps check whether the console can reach Nintendo’s services. It is a diagnostic snapshot, not a promise that a particular game will download at that rate. Nintendo lists 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as troubleshooting comparison figures, not as a guarantee of fast game downloads. Nintendo Support’s slow-download guidance also identifies slow ISP service, networking equipment problems, weak or interfered-with Wi-Fi, and bandwidth use by other devices as common causes.
Improve Wi-Fi conditions and retest
- Temporarily move the console closer to the router, with fewer walls or other obstacles between them.
- Keep it away from metal objects and nearby electronics that may interfere with the signal.
- If your router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, connect to the other band and run the connection test again.
- Pause bandwidth-heavy activity on other devices while testing, such as large downloads or streaming.
Change one thing at a time and compare the connection test results. These steps address conditions Nintendo identifies as possible causes, but the better band or placement depends on your home network.
Use a wired connection to check whether Wi-Fi is the bottleneck
If your Switch dock has a built-in LAN port, connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable. A dock without a built-in LAN port needs a USB LAN adapter for a wired internet connection. Check that the adapter is suitable for your Switch model and dock before buying one. A wired test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from a broader connection or service issue, but an adapter does not guarantee faster downloads. Nintendo’s support instructions describe the adapter requirement.

Fix downloads that stall in Sleep Mode
If a download stops progressing only after the console enters Sleep Mode, check that the Switch remains within wireless range and that metal objects or electronic equipment are not obstructing the signal. For a wired connection, check the Sleep Mode setting that maintains the internet connection. If the download still does not progress, try completing it while the console is awake. If the connection remains slow after local checks, power-cycle the modem and router according to Nintendo’s instructions, then run the console’s connection test again. If results remain below Nintendo’s stated troubleshooting comparison or seem abnormal for your internet service, contact your network administrator or ISP.

Avoid treating DNS changes, MTU adjustments, disabling IPv6, or opening and closing a game as established general speed fixes: Nintendo’s cited troubleshooting guidance does not support them as general solutions.
