SpeckKeep is an open-source, file-based workflow for AI-assisted feature work. It keeps specifications, plans, tasks and proof of completion in plain files in your project, so a coding agent and the people reviewing its work work from the same record rather than from a chat transcript. It describes itself as “strict, lightweight spec-driven development for coding agents,” and its project documentation (accessed October 7, 2026) lists 19 agent adapters and several installation routes.
How the workflow moves from idea to archive
SpeckKeep runs a fixed phase chain. Each feature passes through the phases in order, and the project’s README presents the default path as:
- Constitution: the project-level rules that every feature inherits.
- Spec: requirements and acceptance criteria, each with a stable ID.
- Inspect (optional): a quality gate before planning begins.
- Plan: design decisions and incremental delivery.
- Tasks: executable work items, surface maps and phase grouping.
- Implement: the agent builds the tasks.
- Archive: the feature is closed once its evidence is complete.
Verification sits outside that chain. The README calls verify an optional, on-demand audit. Archival is allowed in one of two cases: every checked task has a Proof: entry, or the feature has recorded verify: pass. Optional commands named challenge, handoff, hotfix, scope and recap can be used at any phase.
The files that make up a feature
A feature lives in its own project directory. Only spec.md and tasks.md are central to the core path; the rest are added where they help. The documented set includes:
#1 Best Overall
- Fun for Coders and Developers: This pack includes 50 matte stickers featuring programming jokes, tech quotes, and geeky icons that bring humor to any workspace or device
- Matte Finish and Waterproof: Printed on smooth matte vinyl, these stickers are water-resistant and easy to apply to laptops, journals, water bottles, phones, or monitors
- Great for Daily Motivation: Each design adds personality to your desk or planner, helping tech lovers, coders, and students stay inspired throughout their coding sessions
- Sized to Stand Out: With sizes ranging from 5–9cm, they’re the perfect size for customizing keyboards, desks, PC towers, hard drives, or code notebooks without being too bulky
- A Thoughtful Gift for Programmers: Ideal for developers, computer science majors, or IT coworkers who’ll appreciate clever visuals and inside jokes only true coders understand
spec.md: requirements and acceptance criteria, with stable requirement and acceptance-criteria IDs.inspect.md: the optional pre-planning quality gate.plan.md: design decisions and incremental delivery.tasks.md: executable tasks, surface maps and phase grouping.data-model.md: entities, fields and invariants.- Optional API and event contracts.
verify.md: verification evidence.
Because the files are plain text, they can be read in a pull request, diffed and kept under version control alongside the code they describe.
How proof ties tasks to completion
The most distinctive rule in SpeckKeep is that a checked task is not finished on its own. Each completed task needs a Proof: entry placed directly under it in tasks.md. The project’s example uses code and test evidence. According to the README, a checked task without proof is not done, and speckeep check and speckeep archive block it. The speckeep trace command reads and presents this evidence, which gives reviewers a way to see what was claimed, what was built and what supports the claim.
The practical effect is that an agent cannot mark a feature closed by saying it is finished. Someone, or the agent under instruction, has to record the evidence in the file.

Ideal for custom styling laptops, water bottles, tablets, car bumpers, luggage, and skateboards. Makes a fantastic, creative gift for coworkers and tech friends.
Which coding agents SpeckKeep supports
The project lists 19 agent adapters: Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, Cursor, OpenCode, aider, Amazon Q, Gemini, Jules, Cline, Devin, Goose, Refact, Windsurf and Qwen Code are named in the documentation, along with others in the full list. Support is skills-first. When you initialize SpeckKeep, it writes a shared SDD overview and directly invocable phase skills into each agent’s standard skills directory, so the phases can be triggered from inside the agent.
Continue.dev was part of earlier support and has been dropped. The README gives the reason as reports that the product was discontinued. The 19-adapter figure is the project’s own count, not an independent compatibility audit, and adapter lists change with releases. Check the repository before you assume a particular agent is covered.
How to install SpeckKeep
The documented installation routes are:
- A shell installer for Linux and macOS.
- A PowerShell installer for Windows.
- Homebrew, Scoop, npm and Go.
npx speckeep, which runs the tool without a persistent install.
The README describes pinning a version when using the shell installer, and it documents self-check and self-upgrade commands. Use the commands in the repository’s quick start rather than copying older instructions from other sources, since install paths can change between releases. The project does not state a dated release history in the material reviewed for this article, so confirm the current version yourself before pinning it.

Using SpeckKeep in an existing codebase
The project positions SpeckKeep for real, existing codebases as well as new projects. Two features support that use.

Migrating from OpenSpec, Spec Kit or DraftSpec
SpeckKeep documents import from OpenSpec and GitHub Spec Kit feature packages. It also identifies itself as the successor to DraftSpec, which is archived, and provides a speckeep migrate command for moving from that predecessor.
Guarding pull requests in CI
The project documents a GitHub Action that installs SpeckKeep, detects changed active feature folders and runs speckeep guard on each one. According to the README, the action fails the pull request when a touched feature is not closeable. That turns the proof rule into a merge-time check rather than a convention that depends on memory.

The project’s README compares its workflow with OpenSpec and GitHub Spec Kit. These are the authors’ own positioning statements, not third-party measurements or a controlled test. The table below uses the axes the README names. Where the README does not give a value for a cell, the cell says so.

What the evidence does and does not establish
The claims in this article come from the SpeckKeep README and documentation index, accessed October 7, 2026 at https://github.com/bzdvdn/speckeep. The project’s own figures, such as the 19 adapters, are maintained by its authors and were not independently audited. The README describes benefits qualitatively, but no measured result shows that the workflow improves first-try correctness, reduces handoff cost or speeds delivery.
Two points are worth keeping in mind before adopting it. The proof rule adds real bookkeeping to every task, which is the trade-off for the traceability. And the agent list, install routes and release details are current project statements that can change, so verify them against the repository on the day you install.
The quoted phrase “strict, lightweight spec-driven development for coding agents” is the project’s own description, not a statement by any named individual.
