The right browser for web development is the environment that matches the behavior you need to build or verify. For broad cross-engine end-to-end coverage, start with Playwright’s Chromium, Firefox and WebKit projects. Add branded Chrome or Edge channels when distribution-specific behavior matters; use Chrome for Testing for controlled Chrome automation; and use a hosted grid when you need operating-system, version or device combinations that your team cannot maintain locally.
First separate the four things people call a “browser”
Many browser recommendations go wrong because they mix different layers of the stack:
- Engine: the rendering and platform technology, such as Chromium, Firefox or WebKit.
- Browser distribution: a branded product and release channel, such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Safari.
- Automation framework: the API that drives a browser, such as Playwright or Puppeteer.
- Hosted browser grid: a service that runs browsers on provider-managed operating systems and devices.
A local Chromium test answers a different question from a branded Edge test, and both differ from a real Safari run on macOS. Decide which question you need answered before choosing a tool.
Which browser environment should you use?

What Playwright actually runs
Playwright supplies browser builds for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit and exposes them as projects in its test runner. It can also launch installed branded Chrome and Microsoft Edge channels. This makes one test API useful across several engines while preserving an explicit distinction between an open-source build and a vendor-branded browser.

Playwright does not provide branded Firefox and branded Safari through the same supported channel model. Its Firefox build includes Playwright patches, and its WebKit build is derived from WebKit sources. Therefore, write “WebKit coverage” rather than claiming that a test ran Safari. For scenarios where Safari’s media stack matters, run the relevant checks on macOS as well.
Each Playwright release expects specific browser-binary versions. The official guide states: “Each version of Playwright needs specific versions of browser binaries to operate.” After changing Playwright versions, install the matching binaries in the same environment.
Install and inspect the managed browsers
- Install Playwright using the package manager for your language and add the test runner to your project.
- Install the browser binaries required by that release. In Node.js projects this is commonly done with
npx playwright install; use the equivalent command documented for your language binding. - Define projects for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit in your Playwright configuration so one test suite runs against each engine.
- Run headed mode while diagnosing a failure, then run headless mode in CI. Keep the project name in CI output so an engine-specific failure is immediately visible.
- When upgrading Playwright, repeat browser installation in local and CI environments rather than relying on an older cache.
Playwright also documents a separate Chromium headless shell and differences between that shell and its newer headless mode. If a visual, download or extension test behaves differently in CI, confirm which headless implementation your project selected.
When branded channels matter
Most application behavior is well represented by Playwright’s managed Chromium build, but a branded channel is justified when the distribution itself is part of the requirement. Examples include an enterprise policy deployed only to Edge, a Chrome-specific integration, or a release-channel check against stable, beta, dev or canary.

- Use a managed build for repeatable engine coverage and simpler provisioning.
- Use a branded Chrome or Edge channel to detect distribution-specific differences.
- Record the channel and version in test artifacts; “Chromium” and “Chrome” are not interchangeable labels.
Do not silently substitute WebKit for Safari or Firefox for a branded Firefox installation. If the acceptance criterion names a product, run that product where practical and state the remaining approximation.
Chrome for Testing and Puppeteer
Chrome for Testing is a Chrome distribution designed for web-application testing and automation. It is useful when you want a controlled Chrome binary that can be provisioned for CI instead of depending on whichever interactive Chrome happens to be installed on a worker.
Puppeteer controls Chrome through Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) or WebDriver BiDi. Choose Puppeteer when your automation is intentionally Chrome-focused or when its API and ecosystem fit an existing codebase. Choose Playwright when the same test suite must exercise Chromium, Firefox and WebKit projects or when you need Playwright’s multi-project configuration.
Neither choice eliminates environment management. Pin the framework version, provision the expected browser binary, capture browser and operating-system details in CI logs, and update them deliberately.

How to test a website across browsers
- Define the contract. List the engines, branded distributions, operating systems, viewport sizes, input methods and media features that your users or business requirements actually require.
- Build a fast local matrix. Start with Playwright Chromium, Firefox and WebKit projects. Keep tests deterministic and run this matrix on every pull request when its runtime is acceptable.
- Add brand checks selectively. Run Chrome or Edge channels for features that depend on vendor distribution, enterprise policy or release channel.
- Separate emulation from real devices. Viewport and user-agent emulation can catch responsive-layout defects, but it is not equivalent to testing a physical iOS or Android browser.
- Move breadth to a grid. Use a hosted provider when you need operating-system and browser-version combinations that cannot be maintained locally. BrowserStack documents Playwright support and a capability matrix; check its live matrix before selecting a combination.
- Classify failures. Record engine, browser channel, version, operating system, headless mode, viewport, locale, timezone and network conditions with each failure.
- Retest the smallest scope. Re-run the failing project locally in headed mode, then reproduce it in the same operating-system or hosted configuration before changing application code.
Local browsers versus a hosted grid
Use local execution when
- Fast feedback and reproducibility matter more than a very large matrix.
- Your team can install the required browser binaries and operating systems.
- You need headed debugging, traces, local files or a private development environment.
Use a hosted grid when
- You need combinations of operating systems, browser versions or supported devices that you do not maintain.
- You need parallel capacity without building and patching a fleet of workers.
- A release must be checked against a provider’s documented configuration matrix.
A grid expands environment breadth; it does not make an ambiguous test reliable. Keep a small, deterministic local suite as the first diagnostic layer and send only the broader matrix to the hosted service.

“Browser executable not found”
The framework is installed but its matching binary is missing or a CI cache contains the wrong release. Reinstall the browsers for the exact Playwright version and verify that the CI image has the required dependencies.
Tests pass in Chromium but fail in Firefox or WebKit
Check for engine-specific CSS, timing assumptions, unsupported APIs, font differences or media behavior. Preserve the failure as an engine-specific case instead of weakening assertions for every project.

“Safari” results do not match a Mac
Playwright’s WebKit build is not branded Safari. Reproduce the scenario on macOS Safari when the distinction matters, particularly for video playback or other platform-integrated features.
Headless and headed results differ
Compare viewport, GPU settings, fonts, permissions and the Chromium headless implementation. Capture a trace or screenshot at the failing step before changing waits.

A hosted-grid combination is unavailable
Provider matrices are date-dependent. Check the current supported-browser and version pages, then choose the nearest supported operating system and channel or run that case on a maintained local machine.

Use your everyday branded browser for development, Playwright’s three managed engines for routine cross-engine automation, branded Chrome or Edge channels for distribution fidelity, Chrome for Testing with Puppeteer for controlled Chrome-centric pipelines, and a hosted grid for operating-system and device breadth. Label every result with the exact environment so “browser support” describes a reproducible configuration rather than a vague product name.
