SpecFlow’s behavior-driven development (BDD) workflow turns plain-language scenarios into automated .NET tests. For new projects, the current project path is Reqnroll: it describes itself as an open-source Cucumber-style BDD framework and “a reboot of the SpecFlow project.” Start with Reqnroll’s project site for current setup instructions; teams maintaining an existing SpecFlow suite should use its migration documentation rather than assume an upgrade is a no-change operation.
How SpecFlow-style BDD works
BDD connects a requirement to a test through examples written in Gherkin. A feature file describes behavior using a Feature and one or more Scenario blocks. Each scenario uses Given-When-Then steps to establish context, perform an action, and state an observable outcome. Reqnroll describes these feature files as executable specifications.
For example, suppose a shopping cart should show its total after a shopper adds an item. The expected result should be something the test can observe, not an implementation detail such as which private method ran.
Feature: Shopping cart
As a shopper
I want to see the cart total
So I can check the cost before checkout
Scenario: Adding an item updates the total
Given the cart is empty
When I add a product priced at 12.50
Then the cart total should be 12.50
Gherkin makes the example readable to developers, testers, and product stakeholders. The automation comes from step definitions: code methods bound to the phrases in the feature file.

Choose the test framework and runner deliberately
A BDD integration, a test framework, and a test platform are different layers. Reqnroll binds Gherkin scenarios into a test framework such as NUnit, MSTest, or xUnit. A platform such as VSTest or Microsoft.Testing.Platform (MTP) discovers and runs tests and connects them to command-line and IDE tooling. Microsoft’s .NET testing overview explains these roles.
Choose the integration that fits the project’s existing framework, dependencies, target frameworks, and IDE/CI runner compatibility. Reqnroll’s overview lists MsTest, NUnit, and xUnit integrations; its Visual Studio Marketplace listing also names TUnit. Exact package IDs, versions, and runner setup can change, so follow the current Reqnroll documentation and its quickstart for the framework you select. Historical SpecFlow material describes a package-per-test-framework model, but should not be used as current installation instructions.

Microsoft documents VSTest and MTP as separate platforms and advises against mixing VSTest-based and MTP-based projects in one solution or run configuration. MTP’s native dotnet test mode requires the .NET 10 SDK or later; for a basic tutorial, use the default mode recommended by the selected integration unless you have a specific reason to move platforms. Review Microsoft’s test-platform comparison and MTP overview when making that choice.
Create a current .NET BDD test project
- Choose the test framework. Use the one your team and repository already support where practical. For a new project, decide among the frameworks documented for the current Reqnroll release, then confirm the corresponding integration package and target-framework requirements in the Reqnroll quickstart.
- Create or select a test project. Use the project setup and package versions specified by that quickstart. Avoid copying old SpecFlow install commands: package identities and supported runner configurations may differ from the current Reqnroll instructions.
- Add the feature file. Put a
.featurefile in the test project, using Gherkin’sFeature,Scenario, and Given-When-Then structure. Keep scenarios focused on behavior and outcomes. - Add step definitions. Bind each step phrase to code that invokes the application or test fixture. Use the binding syntax supported by your installed Reqnroll version; its overview documents regular-expression and Cucumber-expression definitions, as well as asynchronous steps and hooks.
- Restore and build. Resolve packages and compile before diagnosing scenario discovery. This separates ordinary project or package errors from BDD binding issues.
- Run the test project. Use
dotnet testwith the platform and configuration chosen for the project. Microsoft documents it as the .NET CLI route for test projects; IDE test explorers provide another execution surface.
Write reusable, focused step definitions
A step definition should translate a business-level action or observation into a call to the application or a test fixture. Keep it focused: steps such as “I add a product priced at 12.50” are easier to reuse than steps that encode a long sequence of unrelated UI operations. Share state through the fixture or context mechanisms supported by your current integration, and avoid making one step silently depend on unrelated scenario state.

The illustrative C# shape below shows the relationship between bindings and application calls; it is not a substitute for the binding attributes, context setup, or package-specific APIs documented for your selected Reqnroll release.
// Illustrative structure: use the binding attributes and context APIs
// documented for the Reqnroll version and test integration in your project.
[Binding]
public sealed class CartSteps
{
private readonly Cart _cart = new();
[Given("the cart is empty")]
public void GivenTheCartIsEmpty()
{
_cart.Clear();
}
[When("I add a product priced at {decimal}")]
public void WhenIAddAProduct(decimal price)
{
_cart.Add(new Product(price));
}
[Then("the cart total should be {decimal}")]
public void ThenTheCartTotalShouldBe(decimal expected)
{
Assert.Equal(expected, _cart.Total);
}
}
Attribute names and parameter-conversion details can vary with the exact integration and assertion library. Use the current framework-specific Reqnroll examples for compilable bindings. Reqnroll’s flexible binding expressions and support for async steps and hooks allow teams to fit the automation to application behavior without turning feature files into low-level scripts.

Run scenarios locally and in CI
Once the project builds and the test framework integration is installed, run the test project through the CLI and verify it also appears in the IDE’s test experience. In CI, use the same SDK, package restore, test platform, and project configuration the team uses locally. Microsoft’s testing guidance describes both CLI and IDE execution; keep the platform choice consistent across projects and the run configuration.
Do not switch a repository from VSTest to MTP by changing only one project or one CI command. First check framework and runner support, SDK requirements, IDE and CI integration, and the platform configuration of the whole solution. Microsoft’s documentation identifies native MTP mode for dotnet test with .NET 10 SDK and later; confirm the current SDK guidance before adopting it.

Migrate an existing SpecFlow project to Reqnroll
Reqnroll provides migration support for SpecFlow projects, but compatibility messaging is not a guarantee that every legacy project migrates without changes. Use the official Reqnroll migration resources and follow the steps for the project’s test framework, configuration, and target frameworks.
- Record the existing .NET target, SpecFlow packages, test framework, runner/platform, configuration, and IDE tooling.
- Follow the Reqnroll migration guide to convert packages and configuration as directed; do not infer replacement package IDs from an old tutorial.
- Restore packages and build the project before investigating scenario-level failures.
- Check test discovery in the chosen IDE and CLI runner, then execute representative scenarios and the full suite.
- Resolve any integration, binding, or runner differences against the migration guide and the current framework-specific documentation.
The NuGet Gallery lists SpecFlow 3.9.74, but a package listing alone does not establish ongoing maintenance, vendor support terms, or an end-of-support date. The available official material does not establish a definitive SpecFlow end-of-support date.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- Package or build errors after adding the integration: The test-framework adapter or Reqnroll package may not match the framework or project target. Compare the installed packages and target framework with the current framework-specific quickstart, then restore and rebuild.
- Feature scenarios do not appear in test discovery: Check that the project has the documented BDD integration and runner configuration for its chosen test framework and platform. Confirm that the feature file is included as expected by the current project setup and that the build succeeds.
- A step is reported as unbound: Compare the feature phrase with the binding expression, including punctuation, parameter types, and wording. Verify that the binding class is included in the test project and uses the attributes and conventions required by the installed Reqnroll version.
- Tests run locally but not in CI, or the reverse: Compare SDK version, restored package versions, runner/platform, and test command. Keep VSTest- and MTP-based projects from being mixed in one solution or run configuration.
- A SpecFlow migration breaks despite similar source: Treat package, configuration, discovery, and binding behavior as separate checks. Follow the Reqnroll migration guide for the exact integration rather than assuming all legacy projects use the same conversion.
Or skip the browser setup
If a scenario needs a website screenshot as test evidence, you can capture it yourself with browser automation, but that means setting up and maintaining the browser environment. ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; responses indicate page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
