That can reduce lost context—but a specification is an input to engineering, not a guarantee of correct, secure, or dependable software. If the spec is wrong or incomplete, implementation and checks based on it can faithfully reproduce the mistake.
What is Spec-Driven Development?
In spec-driven development, a team records what software should do and the constraints it must satisfy before, or as, it is implemented. The specification becomes a persistent reference across planning, coding, and selected validation rather than leaving intent mainly in a prompt, conversation, or handoff. GitHub’s Spec Kit documentation describes an intent-driven, iterative process in which teams refine specifications and carry them into implementation.
The practical value is shared context. People can review what is expected, and AI tools can work from requirements and decisions that are visible rather than having to infer them anew from scattered instructions. SDD does not require every decision to be finalized once and never changed: GitHub notes that its Spec Kit does not prescribe how teams evolve specification artifacts when requirements change.
What SDD can improve—and what it cannot
It makes intended behavior easier to preserve
A written spec can keep requirements, constraints, acceptance criteria, and edge cases available across sessions and handoffs. It also gives reviewers something concrete to question before implementation. This is especially useful when a task has enough scope or complexity that important decisions are likely to get lost in an informal prompt or conversation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It cannot make a bad requirement good
A specification captures decisions; it does not establish that those decisions reflect the real need. Ambiguous, incorrect, or missing requirements can still produce software that is internally consistent but wrong for its users. Microsoft Principal Software Engineer Apoorv Gupta puts the upstream limitation plainly: “AI can accelerate those steps, but it cannot correct ambiguity that was never resolved.” His June 10, 2026 article describes the translation from stakeholder needs through requirements, design, implementation, and validation.
Executable specs check only what they encode
When expectations are machine-checkable, tests or other checks can reveal whether observed behavior still matches those encoded expectations. That is useful evidence about selected behavior, not proof that the system is correct overall or that the requirements are complete. GitHub Spec Kit documentation states: “They do not prove unencoded assumptions or replace human judgment.”

Spec-first versus prompt-first work
These approaches differ in where intent primarily lives. Prompt-first work can be efficient for a small, straightforward task; Microsoft’s account notes that its limits become more relevant as scope and complexity increase. Spec-first work invests more effort in making decisions explicit and reusable. Neither approach guarantees a correct result, and teams still need to check whether the stated requirements are right.
| Question | Prompt-first | Spec-first |
|---|---|---|
| Where does intent persist? | Mainly in prompts and conversation; context may be harder to carry across sessions or handoffs. | In a shared specification that can be revisited during implementation and validation. |
| How visible are requirements and edge cases? | They may be present in conversation but can be difficult to review as a complete set. | They can be made explicit and reviewed as part of the specification. |
| How do expectations connect to checks? | Checks depend on how expectations are translated into tests or other validation. | Selected encoded expectations can be linked to machine-checkable tests or other checks. |
| What is the process cost? | Less up-front specification work for simple tasks, though context may need to be reconstructed. | Time is required to create, review, and maintain the specification as requirements evolve. |
| Who verifies that the requirements are sound? | The team must validate the requirements rather than assume a prompt captured them fully. | The team must independently check the specification’s correctness and completeness; implementation checks cannot do this by themselves. |
Why SDD does not replace security, testing, or operations
IBM’s May 19, 2026 explainer warns that rushed AI-prompted changes can expose vulnerabilities, introduce dependency conflicts, and omit edge-case handling or testing. These are possible risks, not measured failure rates. Writing a spec does not itself perform security review, control dependencies, or establish that a change behaves safely in conditions the specification did not cover.

SDD is best treated as one practice within a broader quality system. Depending on the software and its risks, that system can include:
- Discovery and design judgment: clarify stakeholder needs, resolve ambiguity, and make trade-offs before treating requirements as settled.
- Review: ask people to examine the specification and implementation, including whether the stated behavior addresses the real problem.
- Independent tests and validation: test behavior beyond checks derived from the same assumptions, and validate the result with relevant users or stakeholders.
- Security and dependency controls: assess vulnerabilities and dependency changes rather than assuming a spec covers them.
- Observability and operational learning: monitor real behavior after release and use findings to revise the software and its specification.
The cited public material does not establish a universal outcome benchmark for SDD across teams or domains. Its value should therefore be judged against the actual work: whether it preserves decisions, improves review, and helps connect important expectations to validation without creating more maintenance burden than the task warrants.

When to use a specification
Make the level of formality proportionate to the work. A small, reversible task with obvious expected behavior may be adequately handled with a prompt and focused checks. A change with multiple requirements, constraints, edge cases, handoffs, or meaningful risk is a stronger candidate for an explicit, maintained spec. This is a judgment about context, not a rule that every task needs the same document or process.
Before implementation, ask whether the team can answer these questions clearly:

- What user or system need is being addressed, and has the relevant ambiguity been resolved?
- What behavior is required, and what constraints or edge cases matter?
- Which expectations can be checked automatically, and which require human review or real-world validation?
- Who will revisit the specification if requirements change or operational experience contradicts an assumption?
If the answers are unclear, producing a more detailed spec may simply document uncertainty. Resolve the underlying decisions first; then use the specification to communicate them and guide implementation.
