Spark Structured Streaming can track progress, checkpoint state, and recover work, but it cannot make an unsuitable source replayable, an external write safe to repeat, state manageable, or a latency target realistic. Its fault tolerance works within the design choices your pipeline makes.
What does Structured Streaming protect you from?
Structured Streaming presents streaming data through a declarative DataFrame/Dataset model. Spark incrementally executes the computation as new data arrives. For recovery, it tracks source offsets and records per-trigger offset ranges in checkpointing and write-ahead logs, so a restarted query can resume or reprocess work.
That is meaningful fault tolerance, not a blanket guarantee that every effect in a system happens once. Apache Spark’s Structured Streaming Programming Guide for Spark 3.5.8 says: “The streaming sinks are designed to be idempotent for handling reprocessing.” The qualification matters: end-to-end exactly-once semantics depend on replayable inputs and on sinks that handle reprocessing idempotently. An external side effect that cannot safely tolerate a retry is not made safe merely because Spark has a checkpoint.
Trace the whole path, not just the Spark query
- Input: Can the source replay the needed data after a failure?
- Progress: Does the checkpoint cover the query’s progress and state you need to recover?
- Output: If a write is retried, will the sink avoid duplicating the external effect?
- Recovery: Can the query restart with the same checkpoint and the code and state schema you plan to deploy?
If any answer is no, qualify what “exactly once” means for that pipeline. Spark’s mechanisms coordinate processing progress; they do not repair incompatible components or application assumptions.

Will the query’s state stay manageable?
Aggregations, deduplication, joins, and other stateful operations retain intermediate data. Their cost depends on the state the query must keep. If the workload produces many distinct keys or the policy does not let old state be cleaned up, retained state can grow and pressure resources.
Choose a state-store approach with its trade-offs in view
The Spark 3.5.7 guide warns that large state in the HDFS-backed state store can cause long garbage-collection pauses in the JVM. It also documents a RocksDB state-store provider that manages state using native memory and local disk while continuing to checkpoint it. This is an available option, not a universal performance fix: the documentation does not establish that it is faster or better for every workload.

Before choosing, estimate how many keys and how much history the operation may retain, then monitor state growth and resource pressure under representative input. If that state cannot be bounded acceptably, changing the storage provider alone does not correct the underlying retention or key-cardinality problem.
How late can events arrive, and what should happen then?
A watermark makes the late-data and state-cleanup policy explicit. It expresses how late data may be before Spark can finalize results or clean up state; it is not a promise that arbitrarily late events will be kept. The right threshold is a business decision: tolerate more lateness and wait longer for completeness, or finalize sooner while accepting the policy’s consequences for late records.

For multiple input streams, choose which stream sets the pace
The Spark 3.5.6 guide documents a default global watermark policy that uses the minimum watermark, so progress follows the slower stream. Using the maximum advances the global watermark sooner, but can aggressively drop data from slower streams.
| Policy | What sets global progress | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum (documented default) | The slowest input stream | Waits for the slower stream rather than advancing on the faster one. |
| Maximum | The fastest input stream | Advances sooner, at the cost of more aggressively dropping data from slower streams. |
Choose based on which failure matters more for the application: delaying results while a stream lags, or losing more late data from that stream. Do not treat either policy as universally correct.

Can a changed query restart from its checkpoint?
A checkpoint is a recovery mechanism, not a promise that any new query version can reuse old state. The Spark 3.5.6 guide says stateful operator schemas must remain compatible across restarts when state recovery is required; it specifically warns against changes such as changing grouping keys or aggregates.
Make checkpoint continuity part of the deployment plan. Before altering a live stateful query, check the compatibility guidance for the exact Spark version you run and decide how the change will be deployed without assuming that an old checkpoint can serve a changed state schema.

What latency can you actually plan for?
The Spark 3.5.6 documentation says default micro-batch execution can achieve end-to-end latency “as low as 100 milliseconds.” That is a versioned capability statement, not a service guarantee, a result for every query, or an independently measured production benchmark.
Set a latency objective against the real workload and measure it under representative data volume, state size, sink behavior, and failure recovery. A design tuned for faster finalization or lower latency may make a different trade-off on late data or completeness; the documentation figure cannot tell you which choice your application can sustain.
Use an architecture review before calling the pipeline fault tolerant
- Define the effect: List what “once” means at the output, including any external side effect beyond Spark’s own processing.
- Test replay behavior: Confirm the source can replay and that a repeated sink write is safe.
- Bound retained state: Review key cardinality, retention, watermark behavior, and state-store resource costs.
- Agree on late-data behavior: Set the lateness tolerance and, for multiple streams, choose whether the slowest or fastest stream should govern progress.
- Plan query evolution: Verify state-schema compatibility for the deployed Spark version before reusing a checkpoint after changes.
- Measure the service target: Validate latency, throughput, and restart behavior with the actual workload rather than treating a documentation capability as a promise.
Structured Streaming supplies tools for incremental computation and recovery. Whether they produce a dependable system depends on whether the source, sink, state policy, event-time rules, deployment changes, and performance target fit together.
