Choose a portable heater by checking its verifiable safety certification, documented protections, fuel type, and intended use—not by assuming every model is equally suitable. Then use it with at least three feet of clearance, plug an electric heater directly into a wall outlet, and turn it off before sleeping or leaving it unattended.
What to check before buying a space heater
Compare the information on the product label, listing, and model manual. CPSC selection guidance recommends looking for testing and certification by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Check that any certification claim applies to the exact model; a generic safety badge is not enough to establish it.
Verify the safety features on the exact model
CPSC advises looking for guards around heating elements or flame areas and automatic shutoff in the event of a tip-over. Confirm which protections the specific heater actually has in its documentation, and follow its instructions. Do not assume a feature is present just because it is common in product listings.
Match heater type and intended use to the room
Electric and fuel-burning portable heaters have different hazards and are not interchangeable. Check the manufacturer’s stated intended use and placement requirements. Available guidance does not establish a universally best heater technology or model-specific room-size performance, so avoid choosing on an unsupported room-coverage claim alone.

For a fuel-burning portable heater, CPSC says never to refuel it while it is running. Turn it off and let it cool before refueling.
How to set up and use an electric space heater safely
- Choose a stable location. Set the heater on a stable, level surface where it is unlikely to be knocked over. Keep it away from water and do not touch it when wet.
- Clear the area. Keep every side of the heater at least three feet from anything that can burn, including bedding, clothing, curtains, papers, and furniture.
- Use a wall outlet directly. Plug an electric portable heater into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip, and do not run the cord under a rug or carpet.
- Stay present while it is on. Turn the heater off when you go to sleep, and never leave it operating unattended.
- Respond to heat at the plug or outlet. If the heater’s cord or plug feels hot, disconnect it and contact an authorized repair person. If the outlet is hot, contact a certified electrician.
- Check for recalls. Look up the specific heater through CPSC’s recall resource before continued use.
How common are portable-heater fires?
In a January 2026 release, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated an annual average of 1,600 fires, 70 deaths, and 150 injuries involving portable heaters, including electric space heaters, during 2020–2022. These figures describe the product category across that reporting period; they do not estimate the risk from any one heater or household. CPSC’s winter safety guidance emphasizes careful use.

Why buying a heater is not enough
Safety depends on both the model’s documented protections and how it is installed and used. CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton said in a December 16, 2003 release, “CPSC has worked with industry to improve safety standards for space heaters, but consumers must exercise care in how they use space heaters.” The agency’s selection and fire-prevention guidance supports checking a heater’s guards and automatic tip-over cutoff rather than assuming those features are included.
